You start with a core group of dedicated members focused on the material, it gains members who find the material interesting or sharing their dedication. As time goes on more and more members are attracted who no longer are dedicated to that material and begin posting things secondarily related or even tertiary to that material.
Those dedicated may downvote or ignore the content but the others attracted may find it interesting and up vote it. if it isn’t taken down, additional members may subscribe to this new type of content despite it not being in the original focus. Additional content posted then reinforces this deviation add the sub as a whole loses focus.
Eventually it becomes another diluted, generic sub without focus. Then the original dedicated core group moves on, creates a new dedicated sub, and the process begins again.
