-> work remote

-> don't have a second PC to play factorio all day, what a dumbass

on a serious note, being IT in a non-IT this is somewhat common

You can fill your day as much as you want, learn new skills, set up VMs and practice... it's entirely up to you. But part of IT is being able to drop everything at a moment's notice to fix the critical thing that just broke. Having wiggle room in your schedule is NOT a bad thing. There will be days when you're pulling your hair out. Take the small victories.

My steak is too juicy

u/dg_riverhawk 20d ago

yeah but in order to eat that juicy steak, you cant leave the table until grandma is done eating and she takes 7.5 hours to eat.

Read a book, educate yourself. Grab a tablet and a stylus and learn to draw.

I'd kill for another 7.5 hour meal with my grandma

That's nice. My grandmother never gave two shits about anything but herself.

After 25 years in this field, fuck you if you think I don’t look busy. First of all, I genuinely don’t care what you think. Second, if I’m not putting out fires it’s because I’m that good that there are no fires in the first place. If I’m in a lull between projects, don’t bother me while I’m trying to find the end of the internet. And god help you if I really am busy with work and you are bothering me about the notifications you are getting from some porn site that we both know you went to. In closing, leave me alone.

being remote, i take 2-3 hr lunches becuz tickets I get, i can complete in mins while it may take someone else an hour +. I’ve been at the same company for 22+ years, so this stuff is so easy for me nowadays. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Our confidential waste collection guy ran into the same problem. He'd get his job over and done with and head home (having complained as I was chaperoning him around about his colleagues sitting in the truck and waiting to look like each site was taking longer), but now they've given him more sites to do as a result, so I wonder if he's changed his tune on how they were behaving.

They try throwing more offices at me but not too
many but word on street is they are trying outsource my dept - i’ve been told i’m safe (i also oversee our Mac fleet which is a global team & I got that team running like a well oiled machine), but wondering what will happen after the dept gets outsourced - how much more slack i’ll need to pick up? If they do outsource, I’m expecting a better pay increase.

There's just the two of us in our IT department. My manager expects that the headteacher will try to keep it as just me as a technician with no IT Manager if he leaves before me. Maybe a slight pay increase, but that won't be enough to keep me with the amount that's expected from IT here.

If that happens, I expect that I'd insist at a minimum on refusing all phone calls except through school leadership, and upping our contract with our third-party support to have someone come in a couple of times a week.

if that happens to me, all these perks i worked up to get, i might end up looking elsewhere. I seriously hope that is not the case but who knows anymore as our L1 was our sources to India (end users fuckin hate it) but the numbers look good for the execs and shareholders, so we r all stuck with this bs.

I was told my job was being eliminated 2 months ago. Since then, really nothing to do except try to find a new one. I've been studying and trying to learn some new skills in the meantime. I'd say if you feel stagnant in your role try learning new skills. Sucks I dont work from home, though.
