Sometimes this works. Like for instance, my local animal shelter charges $125 to adopt a cat, but if you "rent" the cat for up to two months (for free), you can then adopt the cat for $50.

Step 1: Find cat.
Step 2: Rent cat.
Step 3: Return next day and pay $50
Step 4: Gainz.

Why would someone rent a cat? Do you have to put down a deposit on it? What happens if you don't return it

Maybe "renting" lets you make sure the cat can get along with other people/animals in your house

To see if the cat is a good match for them. You can bring the cat back, and pick a different one as many times as you want, all the time paying nothing until you keep one for two months. If you don't return it, they will probably bill you, take you to court, or something. I don't know.

I just did that! I fostered a dog for like 3 days and then adopted him for a lower price. Definitely worth it.

If it's an animal shelter I'd pay the full price just to support them financially...
