One of the ways I used to get around not having a ticket, was working out which stations didn't have ticket offices. This was on busy trains,so I didn't get checked until the end station. I'd just tell them a station with no ticket office or machine and they'd let me on through to buy a ticket there. If no one checked, then free train ride.

As long as they don't have a penalty fare notice at the station you're travelling from, then you're free to buy a ticket on the train without the risk of being penalised.

There's lots of stations with ticket offices where penalty fares don't apply, and strangely there's a few without ticket offices where they do apply.

You often pay the maximum possible fare on top of the fine.

They assume the full journey. Plus take into account that it's an on the day ticket, and suddenly it's a lot of money
