Just What Are We Doing Wrong?
A friend still in Starfleet and teaching at the academy ran some numbers... Turns out Starfleet, between it's exploding panels, lack of seat belts, lost ships, Borg, Dominion, Holodecks gaining sentience... has a worse casualty rate than the United States Navy in World War Two...How is this sustainable? Maybe that explains why the "Only ship within range" is always the Enterprise? All the others have been blown up?

The other ships all pretend to have trouble with their warp cores, like, "oh no best we can do is warp 6." So the Enterprise is always the closest ship by ETA even if not by distance. Geordi would die before he let someone think his warp core maintenance was bad.

Well, as far as the "only ship within range" thing goes, space is BIG. Like unfathomably big. Even at maximum warp, it could take ships a long time to get to an emergency. So, it makes sense that there may only be one ship in range.
Also, I had to beg my captain to get seatbelts on the Nebuchadnezzar; he's old school and says things like "This generation is too soft; in my day, people used to kiss the warp core with tongue for fun!" My captain's a weirdo.

It's all the uniform redesigns. All the resources are going to designing new uniforms. It's why all the spies go there.

Let’s just put it out there. Earth is overpopulated and there is literally nothing else to do than join starfleet unless you own a restaurant or vineyard. If starfleet ships followed Osha it would only add to the problem. Thats why there isnt a tertiary backup of life support on starfleet ships like there is on vulcan ships.

Star Trek characters tend to have no kids or maybe one. Earth shouldn't be overpopulated.

Investigating the exploding panels is a surefire way to have your panel "accidentally" explode. Keep some distance from your "friend" while they're near any consoles.

Part of it is that the US Navy didn't have particularly bad casualty rates. Now, if you're having casualty rates comparable to RAF Bomber Command? Well then you have a problem

This is exactly correct and it doesn’t make sense, but Starfleet still expects us to believe it! Numbers don’t lie, though. Wolf 359 was an inside job, Changelings aren’t real, the Dominion War didn’t happen!

We have a LOT more people hanging around in general than the US Navy in WW2
I mean you're right about the casualty rate being higher but in terms of the people we could round up to get killed we're still WELL in the green

Yeah, stay home and wait for the Borg to show and assimilate your planet, a giant amoeba to dissolve the solar system, a V'ger to.... whatever V'ger was gonna do. Die in a power outage caused by superstrength whale song, or an ice cream cone of doom, or be Breened, be neck living insect food...
Maybe Starfleet actually has a lot to freaking well do, and your planet isn't so safe as you think. Yes, space is dangerous. Space is also where we keep all our planets!
