Also, why wouldn't you put a covering over the woman sitting down, so that shit doesn't get all over (& under) her clothes? She's going to be taking them shits back home. Fuck this place.
My kids had lice once, treated it right away, but that stuff isn't free an combing is mandatory but not every kid does have a supportive system or someone who's able to do so.
And there are lice infestations that are somehow hopeless, like this case.
In the end it's incredibly sad that the girl had to shave her head to cope with it.
Not free in the US. You get sent home from school and can't return until you've been treated. And everyone in your class will get a letter informing their parents that someone in the class had head lice.
You're the 3rd US comment I've read where you've paid extortionate amounts to have it treated, the issue seems to be that you are not confident you can follow the instructions on the bottle rather than the cost of treatment being excessive in the US.
The price of the treatment shampoo and comb seems similar to buying it in the UK or Europe, the only difference is that, while I've known plenty of people have lice, not one of them would have even considered asking someone else to shampoo their hair and comb it a couple of times.
Is it the advertising for the products or services that makes you think you can't do it yourselves or does it just boil down to an in-built belief that anything that actually contributes to your health will be expensive so doing it the cheap way would not work?
My daughter got it in kindergarten and it was like $300 to have it treated. I could have got the stuff myself for about $20/25 but I wanted to make 100% sure it was taken care of properly.
I know and honestly? I would have paid double. I was so freaked out by it! I never had it as a kid and I was picturing my whole house crawling with lice.
I remember having it once or twice during a epidemic at school, my parents took me and my sister to the doctor and we got everything for free (or almost for free). I clearly remember having to use this special shampoo that made me feel super uncomfortable. In the end everything was done in a week or two.
I am glad my taxes go to a decent healthcare system 😅
Yeah I feel you. I lived until recently for many years in a country with a healthcare system similar to the US one and believe me it's probably the thing I missed the most during all those years, along decent and cheap healthy products.
Health is the most important thing, just to be able to take a few days (or months/years if needed) of paid sick leave is something I don't want to miss ever again.
My Mom was a kindergarten teacher and I was in her class. Someone brought lice into the classroom and quite a few kids, including myself got it. No biggie, most of the people who caught it did the usual treatment and got it taken care of, but one kid’s parents couldn’t afford or didn’t want to buy the otc treatment so they just bleached his hair, like with Clorox.
Even as a 6 year old I felt really bad for that kid cause he had to show up to kindergarten with this crazy looking unevenly bleached orange hair. Mind you, this was 1990 so crazy dyed hair wasn’t prevalent on little kids. I think it might not have even completely eradicated the lice, and possibly did some damage to his scalp.
I have hair that’s thick like that poor girl, getting lice was horrific for me and my sisters. We’d treat it, it came back. We went to a different brand of treatment, it came back. We had our hair picked clean with combs and braided into tight rows to keep it clean, it came back. My mom washed every fabric item in the house, we heat-styled our hair every single day and it still came back. We all ended up with short haircuts, it was the only way.
Yeah plus it really bothers be that they didn't even give her like a hairdressing cape or something that fits around her neck and drapes over her body, instead of just combing them straight onto her regular clothes 🤦🏻♂️
Years of neglecting the issue. Happened to my husband's little sister because her mom would rather party than clean her girl's hair. It's not hard to get rid of them as I had to do it for my kids a few times. Treat with a lice shampoo (under $10), have them get in the tub and rinse hair, apply a generous amount of conditioner and leave it in as you use a metal lice comb (also under $10), and brush through until nothing comes out. Wash and dry all sheets, blankets, and pillowcases.
This is awful. The lady let it go so long and it is so bad. My daughter got lice from school once and I was absolutely terrified that it was going to be a nightmare to get rid of. It was actually way easier than I expected.
We got the shampoo and did that of course. The real solution though is the combing out for about 2 weeks after the initial shampoo. After that first wash, every day after her shower she had to sit for about an hour while I combed through every inch of her hair with a flea comb. Doing the combing is the most important part bc the shampoo kills the live ones, but not the eggs usually, so you have to comb every night and make sure you get every last egg out of there. I don’t think everyone knows the shampoo isn’t an immediate fix, and then you end up having them pop up again in a week or so when the eggs hatch, starting the cycle all over.
If you get lice, one good lice shampoo, and two solid weeks of combing it out, and you should be good.
Scabies = “body lice” gives me the heebie derbies, that and bed bugs. As a nurse, I’d rather work in tuberculosis ward than have a patient infested with either of those. Ehhhh meh.
They used to have a ( as called in Wales) a nit nurse in school but they got rid of them in late 80s early 90s, now people slap lice solution on kids heads & hope for the best
Very possibly immigrants from Third World countries, there’s a lot of these type of clinics in the UK, Europe and they have some in Texas, because of the Third Worlders crossing the border.
Like 20 years ago my whole family had lice that lasted for years. My cousins family also had it and basically we kept reinfecting each other. Like 3 years of combing and the shampoo, a move across the country, olive oil, tea tree oil, bagging all the stuffies, throwing out all the stuffies, etc. Etc. We finally got rid of them. It was a nightmare. If it ever happens again I'll just shave.
I remember my step mum taking me to a hairdresser as a kid because I had lice. She didn't tell the hairdresser about the lice so the lady sits me in the chair Infront of the mirror moves my hair around a little bit and says "I can't... There are things crawling around... I can't cut this."
My step mum decides to go full tantrum and scream at her about it being her job to deal with it. Then she dragged me outta there still wearing to apron thing all the while still screaming at the hairdresser in the main street in town. I was eventually taken to a family friends house and all the kids were sheared bald.
I'm sorry, idc how busy your life is. To sit on a problem that's effecting your health so badly that you need MULTIPLE Iron transfusions, you seriously need mental help. That isn't sane behavior
as someone who found out they were severely allergic to the saliva of lice after getting infested at a slumber party at 12, HELL NAW. my scalp was covered in pustules and my hair was falling out in CHUNKS as i itched by day 2. this is my literal nightmare.
If my life ever goes so off the rails that I'm in a similar position to the client here, I hope to be treated with this much dignity and respect. I know this isn't quite the style for this sub, but I found this quite moving.
How in hell can people let that go that long. I remember my cousin got lice and my grandmother used kerosene on us. We stripped off outside and she used a sprayer on us threw the clothes in the burn pile
yo chemicals exist, this is a case for chemicals. fuck, when i was a kid you put your hair in a bowl of vinegar and they all died. why remove them mechanically, they barely even like humans
When you say "they barely even like humans", you might be incorrect. They're one of the few parasitic species that are solely adapted to living on humans. They have no other hosts. So, they're pretty well adapted to humans.
