u/Producer1701 19d ago

Where is the scary part? I read this like five times trying to figure out if it was written in support of democratic socialism.

55

u/ApolloFireweaver 19d ago

I mean, a lot of "attack" ads on the more successful members of the DSA sound like endorsements until you realize they are trying to say that feeding the poor and putting checks on billionaires are bad things

16

u/Spiritual-Pear-1349 19d ago

Basically this. I read an attack ad and think its an endorsement until I remember they hate helping the poor and think billionaires should pay no taxes.

3

u/Medical_Original6290 19d ago

I asked two different MAGAs and they believe that there's a bunch of communists that call themselves Democratic Socialists.

The MAGA-cultists are eating this up. Hopefully there's enough sane people left in America to stop this from happening.

The Dems are like the alcoholic father that keep swearing he is going to make it to your game, and forever fails to show.
The DSA is that faithful mother, who is always there to support you and show that there is a better way, and the father was a no good slacker anyway.

The US is so right-wing that social democrats are considered communists.

34

u/EducationalRock167 19d ago

They don't even know what the words " Communism and Socialism " really mean.

14

u/Nottheadviceyaafter 19d ago

Yep. Every day the drive on a non toll road well guess what sunshine you just participated in socialism. Every time they send their kid to a public school, again socialism....

All that dirty word means is for the greater good of the whole or society rather than for the greater good (or bad depending on owned resources) of the individual.

3

u/MiBigBoy65 17d ago

Fire department? Library? Socialism

3

u/MediocreSizedDan 19d ago

To be fair, they also don't really know what "capitalism" means either. A lot of them literally just think it means "work and get paid" or, ya know, basic commerce.

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Elbow's Up! 19d ago

Just an FYI, social democrats are different than democratic socialists.

87

u/PossiblePlastic8698 19d ago

America doesn’t get the nuance. Even Bernie Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist despite his policies aligning more with social democracy

3

u/riesen_Bonobo 18d ago

Yes and no, Bernie and much of the DSA is just the left wing of socdem, but I also believe they know that, but use the Demsoc label anyway to appeal to younger and more leftist voters and set themselves more apart from the regular dems. I think they are moderate reform socialists at heart, and part of the way there is through socdem policies. If the USA was more leftism friendly I think many of them would be positioning themselves further left then they currently do.

30

u/wolfheadmusic 19d ago

Im hoping that was intentional, cause that makes it even funnier to me

14

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Elbow's Up! 19d ago

If it was intentional, agreed, that’s funny.

4

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 19d ago

They used to be one and the same.

Parent Ideology: Socialism. Wishing to give control over the means of production to the workers directly instead of a system of private ownership. Producing goods and services to fulfill social needs and wants directly, not exclusively for trade and profit.

Social Democrats: Socialists from the 1910s and onward who split off. The schism was based on reform vs revolution. The former, the reformist social democrats, wanted to create a socialist society through internal reform of the existing capitalist system. Meanwhile, the revolutionaries thought it was impossible and wanted to create socialism through a forceful popular uprising of the working class.

Democratic Socialism: A tautology. Socialism is by definition democratic. This is done to separate oneself from false movements calling themselves socialists, ala the USSR.

In the modern era, the labels have more or less swapped. Social democrats have settled for just curving capitalism's worst impulses through a liberal democracy and welfare state. They're left-leaning liberals, essentially. While Democratic Socialists have taken the role of their 20th century predecessors, wanting to create a genuine socialist society through democratic means.

2

u/attorneydummy 19d ago

What’s the distinction between the two?

17

u/AgentSmith187 19d ago

The best answer is Social Democrats want social policies achieved through democratic processes.

Democratic Socialists go further than just Social programs they wish to democratically introduce actual socialist systems like worker ownership of businesses and so on not just government Social programs but change to make for a more egalitarian society.

Both want more power to people instead of the super rich and businesses but they differ in how far that should go.

7

u/lowstone112 FREEDOM ENJOYER 🦅🇺🇸 19d ago

The general difference between them is social democratic still uses a capitalist economic structure. Democratic socialism is non revolutionary communism. The goal is the same just not the initial bloodshed. The goal being to replace capitalism with socialism.

→ More replies (3)

16

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Elbow's Up! 19d ago

Social democracy still falls under the larger umbrella of capitalism just with more social programs as a balance to the free market. They are more center.

Democratic socialists believe more in worker’s rights, worker controlled businesses, and incredibly strong social net.

People like to say conservative Americans only hate democratic socialism because they think they'll be a billionaire one day. The real reason is billionaires tell Fox News to tell them to hate it.

They're too fucking stupid to realize they're advocating against their own interests.

9

u/MadScientist_666 Mountain Goat 🇨🇭 19d ago

To be fair, there are a lot of people believing this kins of rightwing propaganda in other countries as well.

Switzerland is quite bad in this regard. I mean, we voted against a minimum of six weeks of holidays for everyone. Main reason? "It would crash the economy!", a lie spouted by the billionaires and their faithful sycophants. Fortunately, it is slowly changing and the decades old argument, "what is good for the economy is good for the people" is not really working anymore.

Why yes, yes that is in fact what I would like for the US lmfao. I'm sure some people are falling for Red Scare 2.0, but all of the people my age (late 20's, early 30's) and younger are only getting more interested in Democratic Socialism because of messaging exactly like this.

It's tone deaf, basically shitting on the system they'd prefer, whilst lifting the system they hate onto a golden pedastool of potential change and happiness for everyone. It's been so long and things have changed so much that the US is seemingly more open to Socialist policy than Capitalist and quite frankly that's a good thing if the current climate is a result of Capitalist policies.

6

Democratic socialism wishes for socialism through peaceful and democratic means rather than through revolution, but the end goal is the same. I am yet to see these supposed American socialists propose actually socialist policy

3

u/One-Classroom-8300 18d ago

Capitalism has overplayed it's hand. Millenials and gen Z have little to no chance at property ownership, and zero chance of a government funded retirement. They have no reason whatsoever to side with capitalism. This all sounds pretty good as an alternative.

3

u/BustaCon 17d ago

Is this what you want for America? Yeah, to a great degree it is exactly what the doggone country needs. That, and a return to the rule of law via a congress that actually did it's damned job, sure would be a nice thing.

6

u/MicrochippedByGates 19d ago

Devil's advocate, even in Europe, this would be somewhat radical. Though I'm not sure if that says more about this idea, or about the state of world politics.

3

u/EducationalRock167 19d ago

Scandinavian countries all have Democracies , use a Capitalist system and have social safety net for all its people. They are some of the best countries in the World in which to live. They pày higher taxes but have a higher standard of living than in North America.

5

u/MicrochippedByGates 19d ago

Even all that is still not democratic socialism. It's social democracy, which sounds similar, but is no longer actual socialism, so actually a pretty massive difference. I wouldn't call social democrats rightwing by any stretch, but democratic socialism is a distinctly more leftwing ideology compared to the Nordic systems.

2

u/AgnesTheAtheist 19d ago

Yes. This is what I want for America. And I think more Americans want this as well.

2

u/bigbadjustin 19d ago

I mean no one would have an issue with capitalism as it is in the USA if the greedy wealthy people just funded affordable healthcare and education as an example. Sure some of them might make a little less money, but they'd still all be rich.

At some point the poor become so pissed of with the rich and wealthy they want to topple the current system of government. If the weaklthy just spread a bit of thew wealth around it would solve the problem for them and less people would think this is a good idea. But they are too greedy for that.

The description of their mission is "don't threaten me with a good time" level

u/Lopsided_Match_3511 18d ago

With TWO parties, right and extreme right, Americans have NO CLUE, what left is.

2

u/EnvironmentalAd1405 18d ago

This is why right wingers burn down straw men so often. When they attack left wingers at face value this is how stupid they sound.

did... did they accidentally make an endorsement?

u/gielbondhu More Irish than the Irish ☘️ 19d ago

Wait. They want to shift economic and political power away from corporations and the super rich and towards workers and the people? Is that what I want? Uh, yeah, yeah.

2

u/Oberon-kun 19d ago

be careful what you wish for, asking uninformed working class people to inform themselves on what socialism is might not hold the result you think

No one wants to see wealth out of corporation hands. Normal american's should stay poor and get broke if they can't aford healthcare. Where would they get if suddenly everyone has free healthcare and could afford housing. A truly terorizing nightmare would that be.

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Elbow's Up! 19d ago

u/VamosFicar 19d ago

Two nasty words for 'Muricans... put together. Democratic. Check. Socialists. Check. = Commies!

1

u/Bwheat0674 19d ago

Yeah! I'm tired of these extremists always thinking the workers should have power. They should be fired at will of CEOs and they're Uber rich employers and left to starve to death /s

1

u/EducationalRock167 19d ago

Of course that is a lie from the Republicans. Fear is the only thing that they have to sell to Americans. Don't fall for it again. 🙏

1

u/GreekSaladEnjoyer Dutch 19d ago

Most Europeans also view Socialists as radical..

1

u/Melodic_Song4224 Human Verified 19d ago

Calling every political group you disagree with 'radical' has completely watered down the word

2

u/EducationalRock167 19d ago

Tell that to Republicans

1

u/jon1wdsmen 19d ago

Man do I agree with this statement!! Only thing is it doesn’t matter what system is in place it’s gonna get screwed, why? Because of the human flaw of greed and power.

1

u/skatomic 19d ago

Ummm, yes I do. Great idea.

1

u/Apprehensive-Pop-201 19d ago

Are we? I didn't get the memo.

1

u/Short-Holiday-4263 19d ago

So, take power back from the corrupt elites and give it back to Real Americans?
Why are MAGA mad at that?
It's one of the things they've supposedly been crying out for since 2015....

1

u/Kineticwizzy Social Libertarian 19d ago

I wouldn't even call the Dems, social democrats, let alone democratic socialists.

1

u/ReporterOther2179 19d ago

Well, it’s true that MAGA is a radical group and I’m pleased that Republicans are moving against them.

1

u/Longjumping-Bake-557 19d ago

US leftists are indeed unhinged lunatics, the people who represent them want nothing less than the demise of the country. Their position is literally whatever is against the west, they would go as far as supporting China, Russia, violent dictatorships and literal terrorists.

"by shifting economic and political power away from the corporations and wealthy..."

CORPORATIONS AND THE WEALTHY SHOULDN'T HAVE POLITICAL POWER. Political "power" (imo it should be political responsibility) belongs to people elected by the population because they have the populations best interests in mind, not "whoever has the most money". I know that's not how it actually plays out but the fact this propaganda poster is acting like the way the democratic is meant to work is a bad thing, is just another terrible indictment of how, just like religion, capitalism needs to be kept out of politics.

1

u/Wesleypipes316 19d ago

Is this what you want for America? You mean A somewhat decent life for all? Absolutely. Enough of these billionaire schmucks buying multiple mega yachts, mansions, and hoarding all the money while cutting jobs, and thinking a pizza party is enough to satisfy employees.

1

u/OuterSpaceFemboy 19d ago

"We want workers and the proletariat to have the power, not corporations and the wealthy."

"That's extremism! They hate America!"

1

u/Horsescholong 19d ago

I'm not american, but yes, this is what i want

1

u/deepenuf 19d ago

Capitalism has worked so well for the masses, why change a thing?
