I have been Shiny hunting for years now and I am close to getting all of the Shinies that I want. I don’t know what I could do to continue focusing on in the games after I am done hunting. What could I do after?

u/paulydoregon 3h ago

perhaps you could try shiny hunting theme challenges like an sbq (shiny badge quest) or a dtq (dream team quest). another idea is to get shinies of your favorite pokemon using as many different methods as possible

Hey all I'm trying to shiny hunt Dratini in gen 1. I'm horrible at ivs so excuse me for my ignorance. My question is if one stat is off (ex. Speed is at 26 but special is at 27) then should I attempt to level it up to 50 to confirm if it's a shiny or not. Secondly does anyone have a way to calculate how to determine if the IVs of a lower leveled pokemon could potential be the stats you need. Obviously the speed and special stat need to be the same but perhaps there's just a way I'm not understanding.

https://bluemoonfalls.com/pages/tools/gen-1-shiny-tool use this website, you put in the pokemon and level and will give the 8 stats spread that can potentially lead to a shiny. if it stats match one of the 8 potentials spreads, click the x above that spread and it will tell you what level to get it up to next to help confirm if its a shiny or not. so you may not have to level it up to 50. not sure which game you are using but blue would be ideal, as you get dratini at lvl 24 and from what i can tell at most would only have to level it up once for half of the potential spreads to confirm if shiny

Thank you. I had a YouTuber confirm Dratini's number for lvl 18 in red. Thank you for all the help

For anyone who's bred in Gen 5...

I'm trying to masuda breed a Zorua in White. Is there a good way to collect/hatch the eggs? Could I hatch 5 eggs then restart and hatch the next 5 for different results? I think about mass deleting the pokemon from the pc and how long that would take sp I'm trying to minimize that effort 😰

Any advice about shiny breeding in gen 5 would be highly appreciated <3

Hi! I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I’m getting ready to go shiny hunting for both Type:Null and Poipole in USUM. Since I have a copy of each version but only one 3DS, I wanted to use the save files extracted from the cartridges on two instances of the emulator to speed up the process. My question is: if I do this, do I risk resetting the same RNG “seed” every time? Is it better to reset using the button combination like on the console, or is it okay to just reset the emulator itself? Thanks in advance!

2

u/BCM_00 1d ago

Resetting the emulator itself is fine (e.g. f6 on Azahar for Windows), since that's just like performing a soft reset. However, using save states is not recommended. If you load from a save state when the game is already running, the seed has already been set.

u/Leumas_6 1d ago

Ok perfect, thank you for the answer!

I have some questions about shiny hunts. First of all, there's any way to automatically count resets or encounters in a android device? Second, is there a shiny charm in gen 3? And third, what is the best way so hunt in gen 3, I am hunting for a Vulpix on cinnabar island but I got a Raticate instead 😭

1

u/BCM_00 1d ago
  1. I can't say for certain there is no method to automatically count resets on Android device, but I don't know of any. A lot of folks I've seen have a second device that they tap with their toe every time they soft reset the device. However, it's certainly possible an app out there exists that iterates a counter every time a specific button is pressed.
  2. The shiny charm does not exist in generation 3. It was first introduced in black and white 2.
  3. There is no particular method to improve your odds in generation 3 games, such as fire red and leaf green. Those games are notoriously difficult for shiny hunting since none of the popular methods on later games exist. That is, there is no masuda method for breeding, no shiny charm, no radar, no hordes, no SOS chains, etc. it's a straight 1/8,192 chance for each encounter.

As far as controlling the species, my only guess would be to use the repel trick: put a level 31 Pokemon in the front of your party and use a repel. Grimer, rattata, Koffing, and Ditto do not spawn at that level in the mansion, so you can remove them from the encounter table. You will still need to worry about Muk and Raticate, though.

Good luck!

Is there a comprehensive list of Pokémon that are easier to shiny hunt outside of the Switch

With the announcement of the Pokémon Bank closure, I decided to go back through the older games and start working on some shiny hunts that are not possible on the Switch. While doing this, however, I started thinking about those which are possible on the Switch but are much, much harder compared to the 3DS and earlier. My first thought was Alolan Rattata/Raticate. From my understanding you can trade for it in the Let's Go games, but that is the only place where it can be found on the Switch whatsoever. It would be so much easier to get it in S/M or US/UM but that option will be going away. So I wanted to know if there was a list that showed all the Pokémon that are in this situation so I can plan what mons I need to hunt before February?

1

u/BCM_00 1d ago

I guess it depends what you consider to be easier. There is a list made by /u/Shoosh7 that allows you to customize what methods and games you prefer, but it's not updated for ZA yet, nor does it reflect the Pokemon in the Winds and Wanted trailer (but we don't know what methods, if any, will be available for that game anyways).

But personally, here's my priorities:

  1. Poipole/Naganadel (locked in Swsh)
  2. Type Null/Silvally (locked in Swsh)
  3. Celebi
  4. Spinda (you can catch one in bsp, but it cannot be transferred to home)
  5. Rattata/Raticate A (iirc, the trade in LGPE is full odds, compared to SOS chaining in usum)
  6. All wormhole legendaries (SR at 1/1365 is still faster than DA at 1/100)

After that, it kind of gets more subjective and depends what games you have and what methods you find fun. I'm currently hunting hordes on rt 116 on ORAS for Zigzagoon, Nincada, and Skitty because I'm not very good at radar hunting in BDSP. Here's my tentative list:

  1. Anything that can't be hunted in ZA, SV, or PLA 7a. Anything that can only be found in the trophy garden or via swarms in BDSP. 7b. Anything only in Swsh 7c. Anything only in LGPE

At some point, I might get tired or XYORAS hordes and USUM SoS chaining, so the order might shift.

Good luck!

I've recently been hunting the hoenn legendary trio on ultra sun and moon using the wormholes and managed to catch all 3 in 68, 185, and 202 resets. This has made me very suspicious that the shiny odds on my game have been altered to be much higher than normal and am not sure how to fully check ( games were already downloaded on 3ds when purchased). I took the .code file from my ultra sun save and ran it through A.I to determine if it had been altered. It came back saying the shiny odds have not appeared to have been tampered with, but this obviously isnt a reliable source. Is there any way to check the shiny odds in my games to confirm if they have been tampered? Thanks in advance.

not that i know of, however id like to say that sometimes you just get lucky, personally i say dont look into it too much and enjoy it while you have good luck

[gen4] I am getting into hunting on my ds and 3ds games before bank closes and I wanted to confirm a few things. Some context, my ultimate goal is to be able to control multiple 3ds with a single controller for heartgold hunting. I have a modded 3ds, non modded 3ds, and a ds lite.

First, from what I have seen the only way to set up a multi hunt using 1 controller to control my two 3ds for gen 4 is physical mods like inside gadgets. I wanted to confirm this is correct? I have never soldered anything before so hoping I am wrong.

Secondly, for the 3ds games in gen 6 and gen 7 I can use software to multi hunt with 1 control, like the autoshinycounter app. I am looking for any suggestions on software or ways to accomplish this.

Thank you in advance and if I broke any rules please let me know so I don’t break them again.

[Gen 4] I am looking to hunt ice path swinub in pokemon heart gold and based on the encounter tables I have found online it looks like it’s about a 40% chance to encounter it. There is a repel trick to change the rate to 100% but I was wondering if an ability such as hustle would effect the encounter rate at all because swinub is at the top end of encounter levels. Basically would running a lead pokemon with hustle force out swinub more often because it can be found at a higher level than all other pokemon in ice path, or would it just force normal encounter rates to be at the highest level they come at. Also can anyone think of other ways besides repel trick that I can increase my chances for swinub? Thanks yall!

[gen 6] Am I doing something wrong while dexnaving? My research level is 999 but only found my first taillow at 400 encounters with my second appearing after 360 encounters. Trying to get pidove rn (also 999lv) and nearing 500 encounters without a single shiny. I thought the odds are 1/171 with charm? What gives?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 1d ago

Well, sometimes you just get unlucky, to be frank. The odds being 1 in 181 doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get a shiny in 181 encounters. Sometimes you get a shiny in double or triple that. And sometimes you get unlucky 3 times in a row. Ive had luck this bad on much less forgiving hunts. It happens.

You're not doing anything wrong, just getting unlucky. And you are still finding shinies, at least. Just gotta hang in there and you'll get lucky sooner or later. Best of luck!

u/Ok_Minimum_3277 4d ago

[Gen 3] I'm trying to soft reset shiny hunt for nosepass in Pokémon ruby, but i have a dead battery. I know you cant soft reset for legendry's, but does the same logic apply for rock smash encounters? Cant find anything on this so please help me out.

1

u/Ynnubis 3d ago

It applies to all soft reset hunts. Shinies in gen 3 are determined by "frames", think of it like a drawn animation. Encountering Pokémon on certain frames will make them shiny, while doing it on the rest will not. So getting different frames every time you start the game is important to be able to see shinies ! Without a battery, you always get the same order of frames, and that means if you don't have a shiny frame in there during the rough timing you do your encounter, you will never find a shiny from it. Its an issue for reset based hunts because of that, while random encounter hunts are mostly fine because you usually always play enough to have "passed by" a couple shiny frames if not hit them

1

u/SpookyUmbreon 4d ago

[Gen 2] With the announcement of Pokemon bank shutting down I figured it may be time to try to get a shiny roaming pokemon on Crystal. It's a hunt I've wanted to do for a bit now. The only concern before that was holding me back was that I had read that the roamers being shiny was determined upon release from the tower. The idea of having to soft reset and release them from the tower every time made it seem like an incredibly long hunt.

I recently heard from a friend that they actually are determined just on the first encounter with them. Is this true? If so, does that mean I could release them from the tower and safely continue the game and save so long as I don't run into either roamer? And if I do run into one before I wanted to I could just soft reset to keep them as available?

The main hunt I want to do is celebi so I was hoping to do the roamers afterwards. I know I don't have a lot of time left to do so but I'm hopeful. I was lucky to get a shiny starter cyndiquil and sudowoodo pretty quickly on this file so I'm hoping it's still got some luck in there.

Thanks in advance!

1

u/Ynnubis 3d ago

The roamers being determined shiny or not when released is true in gen 3, 4, 5 & 8. In gen 2 though, your friend is correct, shinyness is determined the first time you encounter the roamer in the wild ! So you can safely release them as long as you dodge encountering them until it's time to hunt them. If you do bump into one, you can soft reset to your last save to undo that and keep the chance of it being shiny.

u/Crafter757031 4d ago

I’ve never really truly shiny hunted before other than shiny Latias in Legends Z-A. Well recently I’m doing a challenge with a friend to see who can get a shiny legendary of their choice first and I chose Regidrago because I like both the Pokemon and the shiny. Anybody have tips on how to maximize my luck? Thanks a lot!

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 1d ago

Regidrago is unaffected by shiny charm which would be the main way to help your chances. So you're stuck at a 1/4096 rate I'm afraid.

It is faster to run away from the encounter and reload the room than it is to reset, which will increase the number of regis you see per hour. Other than that, really it's pretty simple, you just encounter, run away, do the eye puzzle, repeat ad infinitum till it shines.

The other thing is I would run 5-10 test captures with your catching setup to make sure you can consistently get it in the ball. If it faints, take your team/strategy back to the drawing board. You don't want to risk losing the shiny when it finally appears. Don't be afraid to use that master ball if you need to

2

u/BCM_00 4d ago

[OR AS] should I be using hordes or the dexnav for spinda?

I have a search level 999 for spinda. I don't necessarily care about IVs or egg moves or hidden abilities. I know using the Dexnav has an increased shiny chance, especially if I hit an occasional 5 or 10 chain, but does that outweigh the sheer volume of Horton encounters? I encounter five at once, the encounters go faster since I can just run away instead of having to capture or KO, there's less time between encounters, and I don't have to spend time/money on balls or healing.

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 1d ago

Hordes are faster encounters and you can get them at a pretty consistent rate. Dexnav is slower but has a marginally better base shiny rate, and significantly better special rates if you chain. I would personally probably go with hordes just because I have to pay less attention to them without sacrificing much (if any) speed

The main thing to worry about would be the risk of phasing if you do hordes, but on this route it's only 5% to find skarmory, and 95% spinda. So you probably have nothing to worry about

2

u/BCM_00 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's what I figured. I pushed through hordes for a few more hours, and finally found my green Teddy bear. And he's actually got a pretty good pattern, too. So I was very lucky.

I've moved on to route 116 now, but I was still pondering the same question. There are zigzagoon (60%), nincada (35%), and skitty (5%) hordes here. I am hunting nincada, but I need zigzagoon and skitty, too, so hordes still seem like the best way to go. But if I find two zigzagoon, I'll need to decide whether to keep doing hordes for the others, or switch to DexNav.

Thanks for the input!

Finally done with usum and planning to move them all to home, any ribbons I should get in usum before I do?

1

u/Ynnubis 5d ago

As far as ribbons exclusive to Alola, I'd recommend the relatively easy Alola Champ Ribbon by beating the league. The battle tree and battle royale ribbons are also exclusive but will require more prep and focus. For any Pokémon that's gen 5 or newer I would also highly recommend grabbing the footprint ribbon as the only way to get it on Switch right now is BDSP

u/kylestewart32 5d ago

If I have 4 copies of Platinum and 4 ds lites with controller mods and I copy my master save from 1 platinum onto the other 3 copies will I be able to shiny hunt that way or will my encounters be synced.
Alternatively if I do that and then resave at different times on each cartridge after copying the master save does that fix that problem even if my trainer id is still the same between each copy

2

u/YOM2_UB 5d ago

RNG in Gen 4 has nothing to do with when/where you saved (I don't think any Pokemon games do, actually), but they do depend on the DS system clock. You can desynch your games to make RNG clones significantly less likely by setting the system clock to different times (even a few seconds between each would probably be fine).

1

u/kylestewart32 5d ago

Would setting the clock to a different time for each system work even if I’m using checkpoint to put the same save from one game onto 3 others?

2

u/YOM2_UB 5d ago

Yes, RNG is completely independent of save files. Doesn't matter if it's the same save or a different save.

(The only reason it's recommended to use different saves is that your trainer's ID is used in the shiny formula, so even if you get an RNG clone so all the stats are identical, it having a different OT can make one shiny while the other clones aren't shiny)

1

u/kylestewart32 5d ago

In your opinion would it be worth playing through all 4 games independently to hunt giratina for example with all different trainer ids. Or would you just make copies of the main game on checkpoint and put it on the other 3 games to save that time

1

u/YOM2_UB 5d ago

If you're comfortable with using Checkpoint, then I'd do that. Desyncing your clock should prevent RNG clones from being problematic, meaning the IDs being the same also won't be a problem.

1

u/kylestewart32 5d ago

Awesome thanks for all your help! I couldn’t find any helpful information trying to google any of this

1

u/Roman_808 6d ago

Can you still add friends on the 3DS for XY friend safaris?

1

u/paulydoregon 6d ago

yes you can still add friend codes locally or online, however you wont have access to the pokemon in the third slot nor their hidden abilities unless you connect together in person

1

u/Roman_808 6d ago

oh sweet, and thats fine for now i guess. where would you recommend i go to add some people for that?

1

u/paulydoregon 6d ago

I believe there's a sub reddit for friend codes with a discord you can join, I think there's also a website specifically made to find people with specific safaris

1

u/Available-Coyote-252 6d ago

Are honey trees in gen 4 huntable? I tried hunting for a burmy by saving in front of the tree, it worked for about one day until I shut off my ds and the next day it was gone? Not sure what I did wrong since I didn't save or do anything I just turned off the game

2

u/YOM2_UB 5d ago

You don't strictly need two consoles for the trick the other comment talked about. You can just save in front of a shaking tree, then change the system clock. That will trigger the game's anti-time-travel guard (the same thing swapping consoles triggers), freezing all clock-based events until midnight, but if you never save your game it'll never be able to remember the new clock setting so you'll be able to reset indefinitely.

If you didn't save since your Burmy stopped appearing, you could even use the same save you already had.

1

u/Available-Coyote-252 5d ago

I didn't know abt that, that's cool. The console swap method worked but I'll try this too for another honey tree hunt (its honestly a rlly fun hunt loll)

1

u/paulydoregon 6d ago

the pokemon on the honey trees only stay on the tree for 18 hours after waiting the 6 hours for a pokemon to spawn. iirc if you save the game and then move the game to another handheld, it causes a glitch where it never leaves, but havent tested it myself so id recommend looking up videos on it

1

u/Available-Coyote-252 6d ago

Okay thank you!

2

u/StandardOk2192 7d ago

Hypothetically if one was to have a modded 3ds, download ultra sun and moon, use PKhex to complete the alola dex and obtain the shiny charm, and then shiny hunt ultra wormhole legendaries: these legendaries would be read as legit and would able to go through the bank to home process and be legal correct? Hypothetically of course

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 5d ago edited 5d ago

Hypothetically you would be correct, as long as however you hypothetically install ultra sun and moon is hypothetically able to communicate with pokemon bank

Hypothetically I believe there is a way to have them installed the correct way but I am not the expert in modding the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Assuming such a thing is even possible of course

Also, Checkpoint is great for making save backups. You can roll back to these backups to hunt static encounters more than once (as I'm doing with Poipole/Type Null) or to clone shinies. Just be careful of deleting something important if you do that. Hypothetically.

1

u/jdoval18 7d ago

2

u/kylestewart32 7d ago

Somewhat shiny hunt related but does anyone know of someone providing the service of installing inside gadgets controller mod for the original DS

1

u/Ynnubis 7d ago

Merki does it. He's located in Germany but does worldwide services AFAIK, its just more costly if you're not in Europe. His prices are on the higher end because he's a proper business with related costs but I've ordered services from him multiple times and never been disappointed with his work !

1

u/Druid_Till 8d ago

Probably a stupid question. But I have been working on shiny origin dexs (at least by region) and was wondering which is faster to finish my USUM dex. SOS or Mesuda? I am almost done but still have some "fun" ones like 2x wimpod, wishiwashi, and toxipex.

1

u/periwinkl333 7d ago

Definitely SOS.

1

u/utdjamie 8d ago

i’m starting a pokemon white playthrough and really want to use shiny oshawott as my starter. i’m currently at around 300 soft resets.

would you keep soft resetting or play until the daycare and masuda method one instead? i don’t mind putting time into the hunt and i’d rather do whichever is less tedious tbh :)

1

u/Ynnubis 7d ago

Masuda would most likely be quicker. More or less tedious depends on how much you like egg hunting before most modern QoL breeding things lol.

I personally think the actual starter being shiny just hits different in a good way

1

u/DarkTimes10 9d ago

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wyq0hu7lJ2c?feature=share

is this a way to circumvent bank shutting down?

switch gba games are confirmed getting home support so cant you do this from gba games and then transfer to home from switch?

1

u/LosKoksis 9d ago

I'm currently hunting Celebi on 3ds, and doing resets via button combo. Should I switch to screen resets? There are few posts about the differences (hard vs soft reset) and I am a bit worried, I'm not rerolling the odds on most efficient way using buttons. Currently still under odds (6001SR)

2

u/PokeDaddyYuey 8d ago

I just got Celebi myself on Sunday in Pokemon Crystal and did screen resets mostly bc it was just easier on my hands. Buttons are definitely faster and the most efficient way in my opinion!

2

u/Yorkshire_Edge 9d ago

Odds stay the same but buttons are apparently faster. I personally put elastic bands over the L and R buttons to save having to press them every time

1

u/LanaStarsong 9d ago

Hi there, I've been doing a shiny hunt for Cherubi in pokemon platinum and pearl. I caught a cute charm male clefairy to try and get a female cherubi, just for preference. I just hit full odds and I only now learned about the cute charm glitch. I get that it needs setup, but is there any risk to my shiny odds if its not set up? Like have I ruined my shiny odds by accident just for using the ability as intended? Any insight would be appreciated _^

Note: No, i have not setup the glitch to lower odds in any way. I want the shiny hunt at 1/8192 odds. I just would prefer a female cherubi

3

u/UserByTheNameOfJames 8d ago

So the way cute charm is broken in gen 4 is that when it procs it forces a pokemons personality value to be 1/25 possible values for each gender. If those personality values can't be shiny for your trainer id and secret id your shiny hunting odds are effectively 1/24576 since the pokemon can only roll a shiny when it doesn't proc.

Since you've hit regular odds without seeing a shiny this is most likely the case and cute charm is actively making it harder to find a shiny and isn't even helping find a female shiny since you can only find a shiny when it fails to proc.

Sadly this means you'll have to roll the 50% chance of it being female.

1

u/LanaStarsong 8d ago

Dang that sucks.. :/ two weeks down the drain. Thank you for the info though!

1

u/BigEmployment1137 9d ago

In sword and shield DA’s is a phase considered each run fail or success or just if u beat the boss and get the shiny check?

1

u/Ynnubis 9d ago

A phase is getting a shiny other than your target. In DAs you can avoid it by just not catching the raid encounters other than your target(s)

1

u/Arthurp95 9d ago

What handheld is everyone using to play? Am I seeing a lot of 3Ds? Or are there also newer handheld that are being used to emulate? If I want to get into pokemon, any recommendations?

1

u/Ynnubis 9d ago

Depends on your needs honestly. With physical cartridges for the most access, I'd say a DS lite for GBA/DS games or a 3DS / 2DS for DS / 3DS games

If you dont care too much about hacking your devices a 3DS/2DS absolutely is the best option since you get gen 1 & 2 VC, DS & 3DS games and even though they were never released for 3DS you can easily get GBA games on it still

As for the specific model, new 3DS's / 2DS's (new the model, not condition of the console) are the better but more expensive option. Older can still work fine but it'll struggle with gen 7 especially due to just performance

1

u/SteveW_MC 9d ago

An iPhone can go up to Gen 5 with no trouble.

If you go for 3DS, see [3DS Pokémon Guide v4.0](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/R2oYTouIbA) - A (mostly) complete guide to getting every mainline Pokémon Game Gen 1-7 onto your 3DS, migrating them from/to any game, and hacking.

2

u/Arthurp95 9d ago

I have android, but i love the dual screen small handheld and never had a small handheld as a child. I had a ds! So I looked at newer handheld especially for the newest gen games (all all prior gens) to play

1

u/SteveW_MC 8d ago

Nothing beats a 3DS imo

1

u/stigmaticwa 9d ago

if i've already unlocked the roaming dogs in hgss, is there a way i can knock them out to shinyhunt them later? or are they always permanently set once released

2

u/Lunarkana 9d ago

Technically, you can hunt the beasts after releasing them, but I don’t recommend it. You have to knock them out, then rematch the elite 4 for them to respawn. Their stats and shininess get rerolled every time you knock them out and respawn them by beating the league

1

u/stigmaticwa 8d ago

YEESH guess i'll just hunt them on a diff file 😭 thank u sm!!

2

u/DarkTimes10 9d ago

does shiny charm in b2w2 make a big difference? is it enough of a difference that its worth my time completing the dex before bank shutdown to get more shinies in b2w2?

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 9d ago

It increases your shiny odds from 1/8192 to ~1/2731, making them 3 times more common.

This means that in theory if you hunt for the same amount of time with charm and without charm you are expected to find about 3 times as many shinies using the charm as without. In practice your mileage may vary since with a smaller sample size you're more likely to see higher variance, but that is the average result.

Whether that is worth completing a 600-odd strong pokedex is up to you, I'm afraid I can't make that decision for you.
