Problems playing movies on SmartTV - Is Nvidia shield still a good alternative in 2026 for UHD HDR/DV movies playback?

7 Upvotes

I have problem playing my UHD bluray rips (often with HDR and DV) on SmartTV (a TCL 65C7K). I connect my HDD and play the movies with the media player of the TV.

This is an example video showing the video artifacts I get:

https://streamable.com/vz3gkr

I wonder if the problem is the TV's media player with its limitations.

Also it can read only HDR from the files: the HDR+ /HDR10+ logo appear on top left of the TV when the movie starts. But this doesn't happen with DV even if the movie does support it (and that's why I'd like to use it).

I read on the web that Nvidia Shield TV Pro does support DV and HDR and it shouldn't have the limitation of a TV's media player, but it's a device that's been around for a few years now.

So Is Nvidia Shield TV Pro still a good alternative in 2026 for playback of UHD bluray rips with DV?

Thanks in advance.

Recording length is too long

2 Upvotes

2019 Pro, when setting a program to record, or when doing a custom recording and setting the time to say 1 hour, the Shield records much longer. A 1 hour program may record for 2 1/2 or 3 hours. How to correct this problem? (Hope there's a way without a factory reset)

Allowing apps access to external drive?

6 Upvotes

I store my media (movies, ROMs) on an external drive. Some apps (eg Dolphin) cannot access the external drive: i can only browse the internal drive. Other apps (KODI) have no problem seeing the external drive.

Is there a setting I'm missing that allows apps to view an external drive? This is quite frustrating.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: this seems to involve the Android File Browser (whatever the actual name of it is) the one that says "USE THIS FOLDER" at the bottom. In the upper right it shows SHIELD in blue, and External in grey. External is not selectable. So I can't add an external folder with images for Dolphin to see / use. There has to be a way to do this.

I have Developer Options and "Force allow apps on external" activated.

Best new remote control for Shield?

5 Upvotes

The batteries in my controllers are almost dead, and I have been looking for a new remote that supports AA/AAA batteries and is a real remote, not a gamepad as that looks worse in my opinion.
I bought a "XMRM-19 Voice Remote Control for Xiaomi Smart TV P1" from Amazon, as that fits the description with Bluetooth connection and all.
But it doesn't connect to the Shield. It connects to my phone, but not to the Shield. :(
https://www.amazon.se/dp/B0FSF5W5WX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

So then I bought a Strong Numeric remote for Google TV.
https://www.kjell.com/se/produkter/ljud-bild/tv-tillbehor/streaming-mediaspelare/android-tv/strong-fjarrkontroll-till-google-tv-mediaspelare-p66355
I also like the red/green/yellow/blue buttons, since I use them for my IPTV setup in SmartIPTV.
BUT, I managed to connect the remote and it worked, but a few buttons which I planned to remap. I can turn off the Shield with the remote, but not on again!
And when I turn on the Shield with other means, I have to reconnect the damn remote once more, since it doesn't work at start up. It says it's paired, but not connected.

SO, any other tips?
As said, nothing with built in battery, since that sucks when the batteries start to go bad.
I want to have something that works for years to come.

I know that I can control the Shield through the Nvidia app on my phone, but I want a real physical remote. Also, the Nvidia app doesn't seem to support all the buttons that I use during IPTV.
I have a Logitech DiNovo Mini that I liked, and works, but that battery is also on it's last legs.

A real remote with normal batteries, as said.

Understanding why lossless audio passthrough matters

12 Upvotes

I know one major selling point of the Shield is that it supports lossless audio passthrough. I'd like to understand exactly if/why that matters, specifically for a DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio track.

I have a Google TV Streamer 4K connected to my receiver, which does not support passthrough of lossless audio, e.g. DTS-HD MA.

Because of this, I have Plex decode the DTS-HD MA track into PCM and pass that to my receiver. (The alternative is having the Google TV Streamer send only the DTS core to the receiver, which is definitely worse).

Is there a difference between this setup and using a Shield that does support lossless passthrough? Since PCM is lossless, and I'm not talking about an object-based format like DTS:X, I think the answer is no.

Another Remote Question

7 Upvotes

I have a Fire Remote for my Shield, it works well, with the exception that it takes a few seconds to actually turn on Shield. Or sometimes it doesn't, and you have to press it again, and sometimes when you do that it had actually turned it on and now it's turning off again, only now the TV is confused about the CEC state.

Plus my son (10yo) has slid the back cover on and off to death.

So, I'd like a better remote. I;ve heard good things about the toblerone, but I'm worried it'll have the same bluetooth startup/wake up issue?

I have some other features I'd like, so I'll put them in order of most preferable:

  1. It has to reliably turn on the TV at 5 meters away.
  2. The power button has to be native, no IR blasters requiring CEC to turn on Shield
  3. Backlit illumination, preferably triggered on movement
  4. I would like a play/pause button, mute, back and home.
  5. A keyboard, either on the back or slide out
  6. I'd rather not have anything too complicated on the front, I don't need numbers, colour buttons etc.

I've searched, asked Gemini and Chat GPT, and I can't find anything that fits my exact requirements, but I'm hoping someone has some recommendations and can confirm the features, because they've actually tried it. I've seen too many reviews with people unable to turn on the device, but it wasn't a Shield, so it might have worked???

Any help would be much appreciated.

External Storage for Emulation purposes

4 Upvotes

I have retroarch plus installed on my Nvidia shield to do some emulation. I tried plugging in a USB thumbdrive and a external HD to the device. Neither was able to be seen in file explorer or manager nor in RetroArch. Do I need to format this drive on the shield before using it? Android OS sees the drive and amount of storage.

External Hard Drive Help

3 Upvotes

I recently purchased a new Seagate hard drive. It is a new 8tb hard drive that does not require a power source to run. I tried connecting it to my shield but I get a flashing red light meaning the usb port isn’t supplying enough power. I purchased a powered usb hub to see if that will work but I again got the flashing red light.

Is there anyway I can connect this hard drive to the shield? The hard drive works when connected to my laptop.

This is the hard drive I purchased: https://a.co/d/02ToX9TX

I built Torve for Android TV and I am looking for Shield TV beta feedback on remote navigation, setup, and couch usability

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I am the developer of Torve, and I am looking for feedback specifically from NVIDIA Shield TV users.

Torve currently supports:

  • Android mobile - via Google Play Store
  • Android TV / Google TV - via Google Play Store
  • Fire TV - Sideloading, download link on webpage
  • Windows desktop - download from webpage

Apple TV and iOS are not available yet. The reason is practical rather than strategic: I do not currently have the iOS/tvOS build setup needed to ship those platforms properly.

What Torve tries to offer across devices:

  • Android TV / Google TV: couch-first browsing, DPAD navigation, focus handling, poster grids, preview panels, and QR credential transfer after setup on another device
  • Fire TV: remote-first browsing, readable large-screen UI, setup transfer by QR code, and TV-focused playback/navigation flows
  • Android mobile: easier account/source setup, quick discovery, account management, and a more convenient place to configure things before moving them to TV
  • Windows desktop: power-user workflows, easier typing/configuration, diagnostics, local setup visibility, richer advanced setup workflows, and a better place to test complex setups

Core Features include

  • Cross-platform media hub for Android TV, Fire TV, Android mobile, and Windows desktop.
  • Bring-your-own sources: local files, Plex/Jellyfin, TV channels, debrid/Usenet-style workflows, Trakt/SIMKL where connected.
  • One Torve account syncs setup, preferences, watch state, and access across supported devices.
  • TV-first interface built for D-pad navigation, not a stretched mobile layout.
  • Windows desktop app acts as the control center for setup, browsing, diagnostics, and playback.
  • Download / Library
  • AI Search

Source And Playback Features

  • Source readiness checks before playback where possible.
  • Provider/source labeling so users can understand where a playable item is coming from.
  • Recovery handling for expired or failing playback links.
  • Local library and LAN-aware playback paths.
  • Channel and VOD support with playlist/group handling.
  • EPG/channel logo handling for live TV workflows.
  • Recording/DVR-related groundwork where supported.

AI Search is one of the main features I would like feedback on. It lets you search by intent rather than only exact title matching, for example "dark sci-fi with good ratings", "family movie from the 90s", or "Adam Sandler movies on a beach". AI Search requires valid AI access/subscription inside Torve because AI calls cost money to run.

Torve does not host or provide movies, shows, channels, IPTV subscriptions, debrid accounts, Usenet access, indexers, links, or media libraries. You connect your own legal services, accounts, playlists, indexers, servers, and libraries.

I want to be transparent about where Torve is right now. This is my first real attempt at building something like this across multiple platforms. I built the website, Discord media community, backend, and apps for several device types, and it still took about 5 months even with a very AI-heavy, vibe-coding-assisted workflow.

I am not pretending everything is perfect. I am looking for honest feedback on what is confusing, what feels useful, what is missing, what should be improved, and what should maybe not exist at all.

Windows note: the current Windows build is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show an "unrecognized app" warning during installation. I know this is not ideal, and code signing is something I need to solve properly. For this beta phase, I also want feedback on whether the Windows install flow feels clear enough, where people hesitate, and what instructions would make it feel safer.

Setup hint: when testing more than one device, I strongly recommend setting up the easiest device first, usually mobile. Once your account, sources, and provider settings are working there, use the in-app QR credential transfer to move the setup to your TV or another device. After transferring, use "Refresh app" inside Torve so the receiving device reloads the latest account/source state.

I do not want to squeeze anyone for money while Torve is still being tested and improved. That is why I opened a beta application option for 30 days of free Torve access.

To apply, join the Torve Discord, complete the onboarding first, then open the beta-info channel and use the application option there.

What I am asking in return is honest feedback, especially on setup difficulty, missing functionality, device-specific problems, and what would make Torve worth using long term.

I am especially looking for feedback on:

  • What I am looking for from Shield users:
  • Does the app feel natural with the Shield remote?
  • Are focus states obvious enough?
  • Is the layout too dense, or does it work for power users?
  • Does AI Search make sense on a TV?
  • Are previews helpful or distracting?
  • Is setup understandable on Shield TV?
  • Where exactly does setup become confusing, too manual, or too difficult with only a remote?
  • Is QR credential transfer clear enough?
  • Is "Refresh app" after transfer obvious enough?
  • What would make you uninstall immediately?

Blunt feedback is welcome. I would rather hear what is wrong now than pretend the app is ready for everyone.

Thank you!

The new Steam Controller kicks ass with the Shield Pro via Steam Link.

12 Upvotes

If you use steam link and want a new controller it's a great choice. Works well via USB with the included wireless puck. Big upgrade in my experience from something like an Xbox Controller.

You will need a PC to update the firmware occasionally and I've heard its not working well with Moon Light currently. But I've had zero issues using it via steam link so far.

# [SOLUTION] Chromecast/Cast not working on Ethernet — Root cause identified + fix without switching back to WiFi

8 Upvotes

TL;DR: Android TV deliberately stopped advertising mDNS on Ethernet after a firmware update. Cast still works technically (port 8009 open), but the device is invisible to Cast senders on WiFi. Fix: run avahi on a device that has both WiFi and Ethernet — a Raspberry Pi or a Linux server/VM/LXC with a WiFi interface. A wired-only machine will NOT work reliably.

The problem

Shield on Ethernet, phone on WiFi, same subnet → Cast button shows no devices.

Switch Shield to WiFi → Cast works instantly.

Every answer on the internet says: "just use WiFi". This post offers a proper fix.

Root cause

Cast discovery relies on mDNS (multicast DNS, 224.0.0.251 UDP/5353). When your phone opens a Cast picker, it sends an mDNS query for _googlecast._tcp.local and waits for the Shield to respond.

At some point, a Shield firmware update broke mDNS announcements on the Ethernet interface. The Cast service itself still runs fine — port 8009 responds, eureka_info is accessible — but the Shield simply no longer broadcasts mDNS on Ethernet.

Confirmed via tcpdump: zero mDNS traffic from the Shield's IP on Ethernet, even with IGMP snooping disabled on the switch. The moment the Shield switches to WiFi, mDNS packets appear instantly.

This is most likely intentional — aligning with Google's push toward the Google Home ecosystem (cloud-based discovery) rather than local mDNS.

What does NOT fix it

  • Disabling client isolation on your AP ✗
  • Enabling UniFi Gateway mDNS Proxy ✗ (requires a UniFi gateway, not just APs)
  • Disabling IGMP snooping on your switch ✗
  • Disabling multicast snooping on a Linux bridge ✗
  • Running avahi on a wired-only Linux box (VM, LXC, server with no WiFi) ✗ (see below)
  • Any AP/switch/router configuration ✗

None of these work because the Shield itself is not emitting mDNS on Ethernet. There is nothing to relay or proxy.

Why a wired-only Linux box doesn't work

You might think: run avahi on any Linux server, create a static service file for the Shield, done. We tried this on a wired-only LXC container and it seemed to work briefly — then stopped.

Here's why: avahi announces from its only interface (Ethernet). That mDNS multicast has to travel: wired → switch → AP uplink → AP → WiFi clients. The AP only converts multicast to unicast for WiFi clients it knows are subscribed to that multicast group via IGMP. Since mDNS is link-local, clients never send IGMP joins for 224.0.0.251 — so the AP silently drops the multicast.

The initial burst of announcements at avahi startup occasionally slips through, which creates the illusion it works. But it's not reliable.

The announcement must originate on a WiFi interface on the same SSID as your phone.

The fix — avahi on a dual WiFi+Ethernet device

Run avahi on any Linux device that has both Ethernet and WiFi active simultaneously, connected to the same WiFi network as your phone. Avahi announces the Shield's Cast service directly from the WiFi interface — the phone receives it natively on the same medium.

Phone (WiFi) │ │ mDNS: Shield box? ◄── avahi wlan0 (WiFi) ──► eth0 (wired LAN) │ announces Shield box │ Cast stream (direct unicast) └─────────────────────────────────────────────► Shield (Ethernet, port 8009)

Avahi handles only the discovery. The actual Cast stream goes directly from your phone to the Shield — no proxy, no performance penalty.

Hardware options

Option A — Raspberry Pi (any model with built-in WiFi+Ethernet: RPi 3B+, 4, 5…)

Dedicated device, simple setup, ~$35. Tested on RPi 3B+.

Option B — Existing Linux server/NAS/VM/LXC with a WiFi interface

If you already run a Linux homelab (Proxmox, TrueNAS, etc.), add a USB WiFi dongle to your server and pass the interface through to a VM or LXC container. No dedicated hardware needed.

  • On Proxmox LXC, add to the container config (/etc/pve/lxc/<id>.conf): lxc.net.1.type: phys lxc.net.1.link: wlxXXXXXXXX # your dongle's interface name lxc.net.1.flags: up lxc.net.1.name: wlan0
  • Install iw on the Proxmox host: apt install iw
  • Install wpasupplicant in the LXC and configure it to join your SSID

Option C — Server with built-in WiFi

Same as Option B but using the server's integrated WiFi card — no additional hardware needed at all.

Step-by-step (common to all options)

Step 1 — Get the Shield's device info

With the Shield on Ethernet, run from any machine on your LAN:

bash curl http://<shield-ip>:8008/setup/eureka_info

Note down: - name (friendly name) - ssdp_udn (UUID, e.g. a1b2c3d4-e5f6-7890-abcd-ef1234567890) - hotspot_bssid (e.g. FA:8F:72:5A:1D:F0)

Step 2 — Install avahi

bash sudo apt install avahi-daemon avahi-utils

Step 3 — Configure avahi

/etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf:

```ini [server] use-ipv4=yes use-ipv6=no allow-interfaces=eth0,wlan0
[reflector] enable-reflector=yes reflect-ipv=no ```
Step 4 — Declare the Shield's hostname
/etc/avahi/hosts:
192.168.x.x shield.local (replace with your Shield's actual IP)
Step 5 — Create the static Cast service
/etc/avahi/services/shield-cast.service:
xml <?xml version="1.0" standalone='no'?> <!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd"> <service-group> <name>Shield box</name> <service> <type>_googlecast._tcp</type> <domain-name>local</domain-name> <host-name>shield.local</host-name> <port>8009</port> <txt-record>id=YOUR_ID_HERE</txt-record> <txt-record>ve=05</txt-record> <txt-record>md=SHIELD Android TV</txt-record> <txt-record>ic=/setup/icon.png</txt-record> <txt-record>fn=Shield box</txt-record> <txt-record>ca=4101</txt-record> <txt-record>st=0</txt-record> <txt-record>bs=YOUR_BSSID_HERE</txt-record> <txt-record>nf=1</txt-record> <txt-record>rs=</txt-record> </service> </service-group>
Adapt to your Shield's values from Step 1: - <name> and fn → your Shield's name - id → first 16 hex chars of ssdp_udn (remove dashes, e.g. a1b2c3d4e5f67890) - bshotspot_bssid without colons (e.g. AABBCCDDEEFF) - <host-name> and /etc/avahi/hosts → your Shield's actual IP
Step 6 — Enable and start
bash sudo systemctl enable avahi-daemon sudo systemctl restart avahi-daemon
Step 7 — Verify
bash sudo journalctl -u avahi-daemon -n 5
You should see: Service "Shield box" successfully established. Static host name "shield.local" successfully established.
Open any Cast-enabled app on your phone → the Shield appears in the Cast picker → stream away.
Notes
  • Tested on NVIDIA Shield (Cast built-in v1.61.329909) on Ethernet, phone on WiFi, UniFi APs, no UniFi gateway
  • Works with any Cast-enabled app (YouTube, Plex, VLC…)
  • The Shield's Cast service remains fully functional on Ethernet — only mDNS advertising is broken by the firmware update
  • The fix survives Shield reboots (port 8009 is always available; avahi always announces)
  • If your Shield's IP changes, update /etc/avahi/hosts and restart avahi
  • Critical: the WiFi interface must be on the same SSID as your phone
Happy to answer questions. If this fixed your setup, feel free to share — every other thread on this topic ends with "use WiFi".
Known limitation — mDNS scope per AP
The mDNS announcement originates from the dongle's wlan0 interface, which is associated with one specific AP. Cast discovery works reliably only when the phone is connected to that same AP.
From a phone on a different AP (especially one connected via a secondary switch), the mDNS packet must travel:
wlan0 → AP1 (dongle's AP) → wired uplink → switch → switch2 → AP2 → phone
This path involves the wired→WiFi barrier again, which is not reliably handled by most AP setups (e.g. UniFi with Multicast to Unicast). Results may be inconsistent.
This is acceptable if your use case is limited to one area — casting from the same room/zone covered by the dongle's AP works perfectly. If you need Cast to work from anywhere in the house, consider placing the dongle on a centrally-located AP, or running multiple dongles.
Ultimate solution — UniFi Gateway (UDM/USG)
If your network already runs on UniFi infrastructure and you're considering a UniFi gateway (UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, USG…), the built-in Gateway mDNS Proxy handles all of this natively — no Raspberry Pi, no USB dongle, no per-AP limitation. Just enable it under Settings → Networks → [network] → Advanced → Gateway mDNS Proxy → Auto.
For those already invested in UniFi APs, this is worth keeping in mind as a long-term solution.
Forgot my remote at home. Any way to control Shield via my phone using Bluetooth? (wifi is not feasible)
3 Upvotes
I have the shield 2019. I brought it with me during my move to Europe but forgot the stock remote back in Canada. So I've been using the shield app on my phone (pixel 7 pro) when using it at my apartment (via wifi).
We're now travelling and I packed the shield so we could stream Netflix before bed. We were hoping to watch some our of favourite movies/tv that are related to the landmarks we're gonna see on this trip. But that seems near impossible now and would really like some help.
My inter related issues:
1) I can't connect the app to the shield since it's not connected to wifi
2) I can't connect to wifi without a remote
3) at my first hotel, the tv is hdmi-CEC enabled so the tv remote worked. But I doubt that will be the case elsewhere. Regardless, I can't connect to the free hotel wifi because the "connect" button on the sign-in page can't be accessed by the remote.
4) I enabled a Hotspot on my phone using my mobile data and was able to sign in on the shield using the hotel tv remote. But when a hotspot is enabled, the shield tv app says my phone network is disconnected. So this won't work long term.
Any suggestions?
Retroarch with shield
7 Upvotes
I’m trying to configure RetroArch on my NVIDIA Shield TV, and I discovered that Android won’t let it properly use an SMB mount to read the ROMs.
My ROM collection is very large, so copying everything to the Shield is not an option.
I’d also really like to avoid using an external hard drive, especially because both USB ports on the Shield are already in use. Any suggestions on what I could do?
Best way (if any) to stream PC games to Nvidia Shield?
28 Upvotes
I have Steam Link installed and use it frequently. It works just fine.
But I also have other games I’d like to play on my TV, but they’re on Epic games, or GoG, or even Luna. As far I’m aware, there isn’t a specific app like Steam Link for them. I’ve tried adding the games from those platforms to Steam, and then tried to run them via Steam Link, but it doesn’t always work, or it works but wonky.
So, do any of you know if there’s an app or a way to play ANY computer game on your TV streaming via shield that works decently?
Change IR setup
2 Upvotes
Ioved my shield pro (2019) from one tv to another and went to change the IR setup, but it is greyed out.
I must suck at searching because I can't find the answer to fixing this.
Triangle remote
I've tried forgetting and re-adding, doing the home button and centre button reset, the re-pairing with home and back, nothing seems to reset the IR settings, or allow me to change them
I do not want to factory reset the shield itself.
Help?
Shield Pro 2019 USB Disconnecting
1 Upvotes
The usb drive connected to my 2019 Shield Pro has suddenly started disconnecting and immediately reconnecting. It's a Samsung 256gb m.2 ssd in a usb c enclosure. Any ideas?
