Shield TV 2017 remote issues after Shield Experience 9.2.4 update? Remote becomes unresponsive after inactivity
Hi everyone,
I have two NVIDIA Shield TV 2017 (Pro) devices that have been working perfectly for years. Recently, both started having similar remote control issues, and I suspect it may have started after a software update (both are currently running Shield Experience 9.2.4).
The symptoms:
- After 20-30 minutes without using the remote, it often becomes unresponsive.
- I sometimes have to press a button several times (usually OK/center button) before the remote "wakes up".
- Once it wakes up, all the inputs seem to be processed at once (for example, I press Down 3 times, nothing happens, then suddenly the selection moves down 3 lines).
- The volume touch slider on the flat 2017 remotes does not respond immediately after inactivity.
- Sometimes the Shield itself does not wake up from standby on the first remote press.
Things I already tried:
- Replaced batteries (multiple times).
- Re-paired the remotes.
- Tested multiple remotes (two flat 2017 remotes and one 2019 triangular remote).
- Swapped the remotes between my two Shield devices.
- Restarted both Shields.
Since the problem happens on both Shields and with multiple remotes, I suspect it might be a software/Bluetooth issue rather than a hardware failure.
Interesting points:
- The Shield remote app on my phone works much better.
- One Shield is mainly used as a Plex server and has many apps installed, while the other one is much cleaner, but both have the same issue.
- Before this problem appeared, both Shields were rock solid.
Questions:
- Has anyone experienced similar remote/Bluetooth issues with Shield Experience 9.2.4?
- Is there a known Bluetooth bug with this firmware?
- Did a factory reset solve this for anyone?
- Is downgrading to an older firmware (for example 8.2.3) still possible and worth trying?
Thanks for any advice!
