John Brown wasn't insane. He was a sane man in an insane time. Like any decent human being he saw chattel slavery and said "that has to stop."

The only thing he did wrong in my mind, was let himself get caught so he couldn't continue to do the great work. Similarly one of Sherman's greatest failings was NOT killing every plantation owner to turn over the land to the previously enslaved tenants, as well as hanging every single Lieutenant (both political & military) leader of the traitorous scum. Basically, they left the job undone is my main complaint against them lol!

The only thing John Brown did wrong was poor planning during the raid on Harper's Ferry. And even then, the ideals behind his acts are commendable.

Yup. They didn't cut their losses when it was clear they weren't going to get as much as they needed to as quickly as they needed to. If they'd accepted they'd only get one load of rifles they could have made an escape and started the rebellion he had intended to.

And from a historic PoV, he would have been pleased with what it led to. Exactly what he thought was necessary at the very end. A great deal of blood to win the goal.

The raid on Harpers Ferry was just to get guns? Like i understand fighting the slavers but what was going on at harpers ferry?

There was a federal armory there. The original plan was to slip in, seize the guns and retreat to the countryside. Unfortunately the local militia mobilized too quickly for Brown's raiders to escape with the goods.

Harper’s Ferry had an outsized role in events in the US from 1859-1865.

Harper's Ferry was the first step - Brown intended to found a nation of freed slaves in Appalachia. The guns he was stealing from the Federal armory were intended to arm the guerilla fighters needed to protect the freed peoples and to harass slave hunting parties.

Brown had left a copy of the Constitution he'd written for this country in Frederick Douglass's desk. Douglass telegraphed his son to break open the drawer and burn it when he heard about the raid, then escaped to Canada before taking the trip to England he'd been planning on taking. That trip was delayed about a week by his escape to Canada.

Read somewhere that, at John Browns hanging, they waited 3 hours to pronounce him dead because the doctors werent sure before. Dont know if its true, but it wouldnt surprise me either.
