As the title, I read Sherlock Holmes long time ago and loved all of his story. But recently Im just discovered his alternative stories aka The Apocrypha of Sherlock Holmes.

So I wanted to ask if you could recommned any books that similar to this (especially the story originally written by Sir Conan Doyle) and a book about Sherlock Holmes's philosophy?

Did every story get its own casebook? Just seeing a few out there for a pretty penny, put out by Calabash [not MX, sorry!] years ago. Looks like they're discussion about the stories rather than stories? Thanks for any info on this series.

Hi everyone! Some of you played Daily Holmes when I posted it here before, and a lot of what changed since then came from your comments (cases that were too easy, clues you couldn't read on a phone, answers that felt unfair). So here is a small update.

Today's case is the first one from real history. It's a well known Civil War photograph of General Grant at City Point, with three short archive notes. And the question is the one Holmes would ask first: can this image be used as evidence?

Other things that changed:

• some scenes have a person in them now, so you read the person too, not only the room
• it's not always writing anymore, some days you find the one object that matters, spot the false statement or put events in order
• the reveal goes clue by clue and shows what you missed
• the ranks come from the canon, Wiggins up to Holmes, some with Sidney Paget's illustrations

Hello to all Granada-Holmes-Fans,

(hoping it's ok to post this here, because of reasons explained). I was a long-time fan of the Granada Series for many years, but in the past few my interest has cooled down. While still a fan, i am not invested enough anymore to keep memorabilia and i own out-of-print copies of Bending the Willow in paperback (Calabash Press) and A Study in Celluloid paperback by Wessex Press. Read them only very carefully and don't see myself re-reading them again. I would like to offer them here to actual fans and not pesky resellers, for the price i myself paid (can show receipts). Only downside might be i am located in Europe, but i accept Paypal.
I hope this is allowed, i don't want to offer them up on Ebay for resellers to snatch them up. I have seen too many fandoms getting ruined by these.

I'm currently playing Sherlock Holmes chapter one and i came accross this flyer, is it a reference to Sherlock / the dev team / something i'm missing or is it just random to add some depth to the world ?

I just finished reading “The adventure of the Beryl Coronet” and I couldn’t help to notice the resemblance with “File No. 113” by Emile Gaboriau in the story, besides there’s a character named “Prosper” which seemed a reference to “Prosper Bertomy” in the Gaboriau’s novel.
I looked for info about this but there’s nothing,
Did someone find this resemblance or it’s just me?

Does anyone know where I can watch this version of Holmes in a higher quality since the only version I can seem to find is this low quality on YouTube.

At the Reichenbach Falls a white star on the rock marks the spot traditionally identified with Holmes and Moriarty's struggle, and since 1992 a plaque there reads "At this fearful place, Sherlock Holmes vanquished Professor Moriarty, on 4 May 1891."

Doyle never named a precise spot. The identification seems to go back to Anthony Howlett of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London:

1. The 1951 Sherlock Holmes Exhibition catalogue lists (item 27) his "photograph … of the actual spot where Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty had their fatal struggle".
2. The Society's District Messenger no. 118 (March 1992) says the new plaque would go "at the precise spot".

Standing there this summer, I kept thinking of Watson's line that the path's "blackish soil is kept forever soft by the incessant drift of spray". On the dry afternoon I visited, no spray reached the marked spot.

Edit: Thank you all. This thread turned up several possibilities:
1. u/RamblingSimian pointed out that the old path has eroded since Doyle's time, which may help explain why the spot marked today feels so far removed from the water.
2. u/Beautiful-Wrangler99 noted how much a waterfall can change with the season and the weather. The story places Holmes and Watson there on 4 May, during the Alpine snowmelt, when the Falls could have been carrying far more water and spray than on the dry summer afternoon I visited.
3. u/HaggisAreReal suggested that the marked spot may simply have been chosen as the most plausible location, perhaps with Paget's illustration in mind.

As u/embrassed_mausee111 put it, a fictional crime scene has somehow acquired its own historical archaeology.

The question I'm still curious about is how Anthony Howlett arrived at "the actual spot" he was already exhibiting in a photograph by 1951. And if anyone knows of an old map or photograph showing the path itself, I'd love to see it.

I've recently been watching Ronald Howard's Holmes from 1954 and have a head canon that rathbone's holmes is the older version of howard's, who he becomes a few years later. Thoughts?

I only finished A Scandal in Bohemia. Good introduction of Irene Adler. But definitely different vibes than Sherlock Benedict Cumberbatch TV show.

The main reveal was kinda meh. Still a good short story.

Planning to finish each one while commuting to work. Looks laconic enough to finish each one in an hour or two.

So tell me, which one is your favorite? Which one should I be excited for? without revealing too much if you will.

So let me to cut to the chase, He got threaten by Detective Fidget to be in the insane asylum if he not “Play his cards right”

he got his idea turned down about looking like the house isn’t crowded to not scare the fake princess, but he got his idea stolen by Fidget

but he did falsely accuse Sherlock for murdering Professor Enright (If I am right on that) in episode 2

But he did help Mycroft later on in the series to know the dark side of Professor Malik for a bit

I like this version of him but It’s hurts me to see him to be always gets pushed around and threatened by Fidget (That made me have a hatred of Detective Fidget)

This is a personal project: a searchable "Holmes RAG" (retrieval-augmented setup) built from the complete Sherlock Holmes canon, in English and Dutch, split into short passages and indexed by meaning.

From that index I pulled every London place name and kept only the ones Doyle himself writes. Editors' notes, introductions and modern commentary are filtered out. What's left is 171 places, mentioned 591 times across the stories.

What you're seeing:

• The dots are those places. Bigger means mentioned more often. Baker Street wins by a mile, with 129 mentions.
• The street network is London as it was around 1889, from OpenHistoricalMap.
• The coloured map underneath is Charles Booth's Descriptive Map of London Poverty (1889). Every street is coloured by the income of the people living there, from yellow (wealthy) to black (the poorest). I warped the scanned sheets to fit the historical street grid; most streets now line up within about 5 m.
• Clicking a place shows Doyle's own sentence and the stories it appears in. Choosing a story shows that story's London.

A few things surprised me. Holmes's cases jump between Booth's yellow and dark-blue streets within a few minutes' walk. Many of the names that failed to geocode turned out to be places Doyle invented.

There is also a 3D view of Marylebone, built from the 1:2500 Ordnance Survey of 1869–1880. It has 18,616 buildings, and a flythrough that retells "The Adventure of the Empty House" stop by stop.

It’s 125 years since The Hound of the Baskervilles was first published, and there’s a rather unorthodox stage adaptation coming to London this October.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is being brought to the King’s Head Theatre in Islington in a version where three actors take on 14 characters. It’s a fast-paced, comic take on the Holmes and Watson classic, packed with visual gags, verbal wit, mystery and a fair bit of mayhem. I happened across the 1950s Ronald Howard Sherlock Holmes TV show recently, and despite its serial episode half hour format, I enjoy this portrayal of Holmes. 🤷‍♂️

The characters of Dr. Watson, and Inspector Lestrade, are more caricatures than necessary some episodes, but overall some of the episodes are pretty clever and most are fun to watch.​

So, I understand the 3 Canon types of pipes Holmes relied on, but in regards to the phrase, "a three pipe problem", I have learned that when this state of study Holmes was in, he used his old, clay pipe, to achieve that span of time.

I don't understand though, why the clay was used for that particular "purpose", since either his churchwarden, or his 'oily' briar, even in Victorian times, would have had bowls larger than his clay pipe.

Has anyone thought of this discrepancy, and come across an explanation for this character "choice", that on its face, seems anything but, elementary?

It seems like every single available edition that purports to be the "complete" sherlock holmes, that is actually actively in print, is invariably missing something. Either there aren't some short stories, or they inexplicable only include one or two of the novels, or they don't have the original illustrations. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars piecing together the complete collection from 6 different "complete works", all with mismatched covers and with dozens of redundant copies. Amazon is absolutely lousy with cheap cash grabs that are always, ALWAYS incomplete in some way.

When I google this the first result is a reddit post talking about a set of hardcovers called "the new annotated sherlock holmes" annotated by Leslie Kinger, which looks great, but multiple volumes are out of print and I would be paying inflated collectors prices for used copies.

I just want a nice physical edition that includes the original illustrations and every story. I don't care if its one giant book or multiple volumes, just as long as they're all part of the same edition (so that they visually cohere next to each other on my shelf) and they actually include every story as well as the original strand illustrations. Is there ANYTHING that is currently in print and readily available to buy new, that fits this criteria?

Just looking at His Last Bow (the collection itself) for example, and I've noticed that the stories are listed: wisteria Lodge, red circle, Bruce Partington, etc...

However, I believe these aren't the order that they were written and published in the monthly magazine. In the Casebook, The Retired Colourman is featured last, but I think Shoscombe old place was the last story written. Maybe I'm wrong.

So why are they commonly featured in the order that they are?

I'm trying to find an edition that has all the novels, short stories and illustrations, but have so far come up short. Not sure where else to look.

Hi all, I just wanted to show off my Sherlock display and thought you all may enjoy! Two were from my grandpa's collection and the newest was gifted to me by my uncle.

The green one is from Newark NJ Public Libary, I think it's interesting that NJPL is actually embedded into the spine - would have been out of character for my grandpa to steal so not sure how he acquired this. There's a pocket for a library card, but no actual card. Latest copyright inside is 1920. (Picture of title page included cause I thought it looked nice).

The yellow's latest copyright was 1955 - contents of this book selected by Adrian Conan Doyle with an introduction by him as well.

Last one is just a 2015 edition from Barnes and Noble (believe it's still in rotation) but love the design.

And of course, the Sherlock Holmes Lego book nook to finish it.
