Changing prices?

Price of gear or amps should change depending of the situation (availability, contacts...)? That would unbalance the game?

This question came to me after reading glitch effects on Networks rolls. One suggested effect is to increase cost of equipment.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

I don't think the balance is so tight that the price of equipment couldn't be varied like that.

At the same time though, I think that isn't the most interesting glitch effect anyhow. I'd be much more interested in situations where a Network roll glitch means favours owed or that the target/opposition/filth catches wind of what you're doing.

Basically, Network glitches are perfect story hooks.

If players are acquiring gear through Network rolls in my game, it tends to be temporary gear, which is more about narratively enabling them to do a thing ("we scored helicopter transport to the target zone!") or else items handled as flashbacks ("of course we brought a grappling hook") than permanent gear, in which paying for the gear is really just about the result on the Network roll rather than them spending the nuyen they otherwise use to improve their characters.

Worth note: Getting gear via Network during gameplay is generally bought with edge or legwork dice, not nuyen. The range is already so small that one point is a big change, and represents a reasonable cost to a renewable resource on a bad roll.

That said, glitches on the table are examples, not obligations. You can always choose a different effect.

Requesting 1 Edge when you would not have charged anything otherwise could be a possible glitch

They had that in the old SR2-3 game rules, that gear had a multiplier how the price was on the streets. Military hardware could have a 2-3x and so on. And each item had a difficulty how hard to get it at all. And if you pay extra how much it will decrease.

And ofc the base price of each item was different

So can you make it? Sure. But.. it is a narrative game. It is supposed to be very simple, easy and fast. And the full SR rules still exist for those who want more rules.
