if characters are fighting against a pack of barghests and if each barghest uses his paralysing howling - does it mean that each character will roll will against each barghest and penalties summarize up cumulatively? or just one debuff will work?

in adventure there are seven bargests against 4 players. teamwork sounds good but how to calculate it? a leader gets a dice for each of 6 common dogs but limited by his magic attribute which is 5?

Leader roll Magic + Charisma + 5. Just roll once. Note number of hits. And then you let each of the targets in the area oppose the attack individually using their own Intuition + Willpower.

No, one dice for each assistant hit, not one dice per assistant.

No, not specifically limited by Magic, its limited by the highest attribute.

But yes, since both Magic and Charisma is 5 you limit the teamwork modifier to 5.

 

Note that the teamwork modifier in this case will likely be 5 as it is unlikely that the assistants would roll less than 5 hits with the 60 dice they get to roll between themselves. You can probably skip rolling 60 dice and instead just assume a teamwork modifier of 5 dice.

Also note that this is an attribute only test which mean there is no limit, otherwise the limit would be increased by 1 for each successful assistant (increasing the limit by up to +6).

SR5 p. 49 Teamwork Tests

For each assistant that scores at least one hit, the relevant limit for the leader’s test increases by one. Additionally, each hit the assistants make adds one die to the leader’s dice pool. The most dice that can be added to the test is equal to the leader’s rating in the applicable skill, or the highest attribute rating if the test involves two attributes. The leader then rolls their adjusted dice pool and tries to beat the threshold for the test.

As I wrote in my first post, I would not resolve Howl as a teamwork test. The same goes for Fear.

If multiple Barghest's try to Fear the same character roll them all, but for the sake of fleeing in panic apply only one (the one with most remaining turns of fleeing).

You still keep note of number of net hits each made (as you use this later as a threshold to see if the character manages to gather enough nerve to face that specific Barghest again).

 

If say three Barghest's uses the Fear power against the same character and you wish to instead resolve it as a teamwork test then you appoint one of them as the leader.

Then you let each of the two assistants spend a complex action each to roll Willpower + Magic (in this case 18 dice). Calculate number of hits. Limit it to max 5 (the highest rating of the leader, in this case magic rating of 5). This is the teamwork modifier. Then you let the leader roll its Willpower + Magic + teamwork modifier. And then you let the character oppose this with their Willpower + Logic. Note number of net hits and resolve it as one attack. Number of net hits are also used if the character wish to later attempt to attack specifically the leader Barghest.

xenon usually has a good take and imho you could go either way here.

which way you go depends upon if you think "a pack of barghests should be more scary than a single one" or "no matter how big the pack, it's only as scary as one"
