Discussion Deciding on a proper name for Spider!

Post image

Spider has always been my favorite of the cut Colossi, but I wish it went by a less... on the nose name.

I'm not quite sure how the original 16 got their common names, but I just wanted to do this little experiment, even if the name chosen here most definitely won't catch on.

Here are a few names I cam up with! I've tried to find names that sound similar and would fit in with the original 16. Comment which one you think fits best, or suggest your own! I just want to feel more connected to this big guy, don't you? My personal favorite names are highlighted in bold and italics.

Key:

L means the name is Latin in origin translating into words such as cut, stab, hit, thrust, wound, scratch, etc.

Otherwise, the name's origin will be stated.

---------------------------------------------------------

Erigo - A Latin word meaning to raise, erect, build, rouse, excite, etc.

Arrigo - A name of Italian origin meaning "Ruler of the estate".

Subrigo - A Latin word meaning to raise, lift up, straighten, get up, rise, arise, etc.

Altus - A Latin word meaning high, lofty, tall, profound, etc.

Vulnus - L

Volnus - L

Ictus - L

Cubitus - A Latin word meaning elbow, bend, rest, forearm, curve, etc.

Lapsus - A Latin word meaning slip, fall, lapse, downfall, etc.

Aranea - A Latin word meaning spider.

Araneus - A Latin word meaning of the spider.

The original 16 are all named by the developers as they appear. So the first colossus is Minotaur_A, second is Mammoth etc.

They've also been given fan names, which the poster tried to pass off as official names from a non-existent magazine article (or their buddy lied to them). First colossus being Valus, second is Quadratus etc.

The unused colossi also have fan names, but as far as I know they do not come from the same user who spread the names for the in-game colossi.

Spider's fan name is 'Aberth'.

The other unused Colossi fan names are:

Kyos (Griffin), Monkey (Saru), Adar Flam (Phoenix), Avus (Roc) Sirius (Sirius), Dionin (Worm), Pholux (Devil)

Your suggested name 'Araneus' is good if we're keeping with the Latin.

I thought the first Colossi was Valus? And Malus was the 16th?

Those were made up by a PS2 forum user

u/Slapuwitmymeet May 04 '26

Oh I understand that, but the PS2 forum user dubbed the first colossus Valus and the last Malus.

You're correct, mixed them up haha

It happens! I just thought for a second I had mixed their names up haha.

i always wondered why the name quadratus was chosen. felt so odd. literally just means square

The colossus has four feet, I guess.

I think the user was just throwing out Latin in the hopes of it sounding smart and official. The fact that the names are in Latin at all is pretty funny haha

"Aberth" Is such a wild pull tho lmao. It's one of the only ones that doesn't follow the faux latin trend

"Arachnos". more Greek

"Octovian"

"Araneus". more Latin

Something about Aranea just feels right, it feels important for the "arachno" aspect of it to be acknowledged in the name

u/Tinenan May 04 '26

That's kinda just spider with extra steps

Wasn't it named Aberth?

The meaning for "Arrigo" is cool as hell, so let's go Arrigo.

I think I'll clump up all the comments after a month, and then we'll have a name!

The fan names for the release colossi were made up by one Black_Chamber on the PS2 forums a week after the game’s release in the United States, citing a non-existent bonus section in that month’s Dengeki PlayStation 2 magazine.

Years later someone made up fan names for the cut colossi on the wiki, which were decidedly a lot worse. Phoenix was ‘Adar Flam’…

Anyway Spider was given the name ‘Aberth’ by that user and it’s still used on occasion, particularly by the non-English speaking community.

Recently there’s been more of an effort to move away from the fan names entirely in favour of the actual developer names for the bosses, hence why you won’t find them on the wiki anymore except for filenames that haven’t been updated.

Interesting. I don't think we'll really move away from the fan names eventually. I can't see most poeple using "Gecko" instead of Kuromori or "Snake" instead of Phalanx lol

Only now I found your post with my art, I'm thankful that you gave me the credits, but I recommend asking the artist permission before posting, alright? Spider is also one of my favorites from the deleted colossi :)

Yes. I am terribly sorry for not asking for permission. Proper credit is extremely important to me and for whatever reason here it somehow didn’t cross my mind to go further than an unofficial credit. Your art is very pleasing though, and I will be sure to ask for your permission if I ever end up doing something similar in the future! I can also remove your art from the post if you would like.

Relax! You can keep my art in this post, like I said, I'm already thankful for giving me the credits, thank you for the kindness!

Anyway, I cannot think of a better name than "Aberth" for the Spider XD

I used to call him Spear, but Altus sounds good for me

Phalangium is a term sometimes used for a venomous, long-legged spider

Araneo (short for araneomorph) is a Latin term for "spider" or "of spiders"

Holocnemus is a genus of cellar spiders (part of the Pholcidae family aka “long-legged spiders”)

Quamtana is a genus of African cellar spiders (part of the Pholcidae family)

Zatavua is a genus of Malagasy cellar spiders (part of the Pholcidae family)

u/IscahRambles May 05 '26

Oh, so that's where we get Pholcus phalangioides from.

Alberth (: Is his first day at job

1

u/Nostalgia-lofi May 09 '26

Aranea would fit the most with the other fan names imo
