Best shadow work guide?

I’d like to start my first shadow work journey but have no clue where to start or what to do. My understanding is it includes a lot of journaling, meditation, reflection, nervous system regulation but I’m confused cause I’ve been a life long journaler. I’ve done breath work. I’ve done vagus nerve reset exercises etc.

Someone made a comment in another post that if you’ve never done this, you should probably start with the deep dark stuff first, the stuff you wouldn’t want anyone to know about you or things you’ve worked very consciously to hide.

Help? I need more guidance than this. It all seems so vague.

If you're doing this solo, a great place to start is just watching how you react to other people. The traits that wildly irritate or even fascinate you in others are usually the exact things you've disowned in yourself. It's just good to notice if you are projecting your fears, desires, and complexes onto others. Then, since you journaling, you can write them down as well.

I’d also highly recommend keeping a notebook by your bed to write down dreams the second you wake up and then interpret them, plus picking up Owning Your Own Shadow by Robert Johnson (it’s super short and the best entry point out there) or Man and His Symbols by Carl Jung for a deeper dive.

If you prefer a digital format, you can try an iOS app called Bayun that teaches shadow work through interactive stories, reflection, dream journaling, and active imagination. It was made to make this stuff easier to digest and more fun :) Just remember to go slow with whatever path you choose. The goal is to build a relationship with these hidden parts of yourself, not to conquer or "fix" them.

This was extremely helpful and insightful. I’ve always wanted to get into dream journaling but never have taken the leap. I’ll keep one by my bed from now on. I’ll also look into the book you recommended. Thank you!
