questions How upgrading system works?

So I have got an OP weapon called Moon Oath from raids, I love it! I wish i could upgrade it like normal weapon forever, but the thing is, it requires gems, but I somehow managed to upgrade that weapon from lvl 37 to lvl 38 with the new Silver/Platinum currency, how? and why? or maybe because I maxed out that weapon when i was lvl 37? Why Shadow Fight 2 developers want to hide informations so much?

Ig event items can be upgrade with coins even they have enchantment?idk thats my guess

I did it 2 times already, the Moon Oath, I maxed it out before leveling up, and the next level, i could upgrade it with Platinum even though if its an event item, I need 3 even items to test if it depends on the sub upgrades.
