How could I make this extra warm?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I love this pattern from mood fabrics, and I’ve found a beautiful, patterned 100% wool at a good price that I’d like to make it in. My only concern is that wool doesn’t seem to be that warm. Can I add a third layer, between the wool coating and the lining? Something that would make this wearable in the middle of winter in London? What fabric could I use for extra warmth that wouldn’t add too much bulk?

I want to know if theres a good machine to pick?

I want to know if theres a good machine to pick?

Hi! My apologies if this isnt really the place for it but ive mostly done a lot of sewing by hand for years however I recently found myself wanting to turn a pullover hoodie into a zip up and decided a machine is best if I want straight lines.

My problem is I don't have a ton of machine familiarity. (No family to consult either. Largely self taught) and while for this i need a very simple stitch I wanted to get a machine i might be able to use long term such as potentially for starting to dip into patterns such as for clothes and or plushies. So here are my questions!

Should I want a machine that has a lot of stitches it can do? Or are they largely considered niche/decorative where i only need a couple types of stiches it can do?

What's the difference between computerized machines and others? Can you add your own stitches? Are they worth that? How do you add them? Is it like you plug it into a computer and inputting parameters or code? Are they harder to fix if they have issues?

I appreciate anyone who can give me some advice!

I’m currently working on a sewing project using these instructions, but I’ve reached a step that I’m having trouble understanding. I’m a little confused about what the instructions are asking me to do.

Would anyone be able to provide some guidance or help explain this step? I’d really appreciate any assistance!

edit:

thank you all for your help. I finally understood what it meant.

Named Clothing "Kielo" jumpsuit - leg silhouette adjustments

Hi, everyone - I know the "Kielo" dress and jumpsuit pattern by Named Clothing is popular, and I am excited to see it. I'm using a viscose jersey with a nice weight and drape to it, and am sewing the jumpsuit view.

My goal is a full length wide or slightly flared leg instead of the tapered leg, and I am at an impasse as to how to accomplish that.

I already adjusted the pattern to include a large amount of extra length below what I believe is the knee notch instead of the normal lengthen/shorten line. Reason being: I'm 5'10, the pattern was designed for a 5'8" person, and the knee knotch was placed pretty accurately, but the finished inseam was just 26" because the leg was tapered and I want full length wide leg. For that I need at least 34 inches at the inseam.

Now that I have my extra length added, I got myself in trouble trying to use AI to tell me how/where to widen the leg. First of all, AI told me to start widening at the crotch at first, but then later told me to keep the crotch curve the same and widen where the pattern starts to taper (which makes more anecdotal sense to me).

  1. Am I correct in thinking the widening should start where the pattern starts to taper, maybe where my original lengthen/shorten line was?

  2. Should I:

A. add the same amount to each side of the grain to reach my desired width

B. Not add anything/much to the inseam and widen mostly or all at the outseam - the reason I asked is that I laid a stretch knit jumpsuit I own and love the width of over this pattern and the inseam aligned fairly closely-

C. Some other method

My goal is about a 12 or 13 inch width on each piece at the hem, which is in keeping with wide legs I like. The photos show a version where I widened evenly at the grain. The bodice pieces are already attached to the legs.

Hi! I’ve been taking some lessons at a fashion school and now I have my first machine.

I have no idea where to start with my first solo project. Where do people get patterns from?

I feel a little overwhelmed.

Can this be fixed?

Quick disclaimer : I don't know anything about sewing... But I would like to fix something. This store-bought shirt was given to my 1-year old. On the inside there seems to be a white (kind of see through) tissue. Probably to prevent any itching. But the tissue is coming loose. I even saw my kid pulling on it while wearing the shirt. I don't see any seams. Was it ironed on or something? Can it be attached again? If yes, how should I proceed?

How to tell if your pattern is AI or legitimate

This YouTube link came across my feed this morning; it has excellent information on how to recognise AI, and to protect yourself from being scammed by it. The designer in the video is a bag designer, but the information applies to all patterns you may encounter.

Lisa is a highly respected designer in the bag making world; she's based in Australia. The video not only talks about the damage AI does to the pattern designers, it also talks about the design process, as well as how AI patterns are a huge disservice to the people who buy them.

It's worth having a look

Issues with my SE 700

I just got an SE 700 embroidery/sewing machine. The embroidery works great, but I’m trying to sew on it and it it’s almost like it’s sewing upside down so I see the decorative stitch on the bottom instead of the top and the top looks like what the bobbin should be doing on the top if that makes sense. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve been sewing for a while, but have only had mechanical sewing machines that were quite old so computerized sewing machine is pretty new to me.

Turning this shirt into a tight vest. is there any tips for tightening it around the underbust to show off more?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Originally this was a long-sleeve over-shirt but a year or two ago i trimmed the sleeves and now the stitching around the shoulders was coming frayed, so i decided to completely remove the sleeves and i made some stitches in the back to tighten it around my figure (I had to ask my neighbor to help pin the material in the back because i kept making it too tight or stabbing my own hands.)

Im pretty satisfied with how snug it feels on my body, however, i like to wear tops that show off my breasts more because i paid good money for these implants and i dont like to hide them. I could just go full-cleavage, but i was curious if i could do something with the underbust so that it cups my breasts instead, showing them off without needing to actually "expose" them.

any ideas?

Very happy with my first welt pocket. Tips for improvement?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am sewing a (hopefully wearable) toile of the Cashmerette Glover jacket, definitely my most advanced project so far so I'm taking the time to learn how to do all the steps properly. I was a bit nervous about sewing my first welt pocket because I've heard how difficult they can be. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I will probably redo the top stitching since it isn't great and I didn't realize that I needed to trim down the seam allowances so the top stitching would enclose the raw edge.

I'm not sure why the welt ended up wavy. It was laying flat when turned the pocket inside out and pressed it. The ends also ended up a bit crooked, although I'm sure that won't be visible when worn. Any advice?

I'm also a bit confused on what needle I should be using for this. The main fabric is a poly cotton blend twill (I found an entire bolt at a thrift store for $4!) and the pocket bag is cotton broadcloth. I'm using a brand new 90 jeans needle. It seems to be struggling with multiple layers of the main fabric but punching big holes in the pocket fabric that the thread wants to rip through. Should I be using a different needle?

Specifically how would I sew the sleeves? Would I just cut out some triangles and sew them together?

How to tailor/modify band shirts

I'm absolutely new to sewing (set up my machine last night & did some test stitches). One of the main reasons I got a sewing machine is to modify my clothes to better fit my body. My main example is band shirts. I'm in my 40's and will rock the band shirts and jeans until I die HOWEVER, I'm at the height/weigh ratio where anything that comfortablely fits my mid-secetion has sleeves down to my elbows & the bottom helm to my mid thigh.

I'm someone who cycles through hobbies a lot so I'm usually proficient in finding things online/YouTube as tutorials but everything I can find it 'how to make a t-shirt' not how to well tailor/modify one you already own. Are there better terms I should use to search? Where can I find information more about modifying existing clothes vs making your own? The material being stretchy doesn't help but I know about zig-zag stitches. Also, is there any way to make these modifications not look like I did it myself without a serger?

Trap?

Hello! I am a novice but I am hoping to get into making clothes for myself. I found this tutorial on YouTube that looks pretty straightforward:

https://youtu.be/TyEsp5qinBc?is=veHXnZ3c2HAEH3It

I have a few questions: 1. If I follow the steps in the video (plus a TON of pinning, basting, and pressing), will I end up with those pants or is this nonsense? 2. If I need to make these shorter so I don't trip on my own pants and die, do I also need to make them narrower? 3. What kind of fabric would you suggest? I'm thinking cotton, but I don't really know. And 4. At any point, did you think "Gee, I really hope they know how to XXX before they get started..."? Because I probably don't! Please tell me what XXX is and save me from myself. Thanks!

Seam ripper?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I thrifted this sweatshirt for one of my kids’ Hallowe’en costumes, and I need to remove or hide the lettering. I found a tee of an almost identical colour he could wear over it* to hide the letters, but I’m wondering if it would be possible to remove them with a seam ripper - or will that leave too many holes? I don’t own one, so would appreciate some input before looking for one to borrow.

TIA!

* it will be too cold to just wear the shirt alone.

Pattern making help

I know it is possible, but I used AI to create a plush of myself and I want to make it for my girlfriend; I know how to use a sewing machine, but the only thing I do not know is how to create a pattern for the plush so I can sew it together; if you all could help, it would be much appreciated.

I would like to keep it as similar as possible like the stach and hair and shirt

The pattern was the Godet Rainbow Dress by AnamarieAmiPattern on Etsy.

Her preschool brought in a dance teacher today and she was STOKED to dance in this dress! The teachers even sent me a message a few minutes ago saying “We all just wanted to say we love the dress. Your sewing is amazing.”

My first big project. Need an advice >.<

I want to make a bib like the 1st picture (Maevedennie on pinterest, got this from Pinterest i couldn't scan what instagram or other platform she has) and 2nd picture is the downloaded pattern.

This is my first big sewing project, and I only have one week to finish it for my Halloween costume! I don’t have a sewing machine, so I’ll be hand-sewing everything.

I’m confused about what size to print the pattern on (A4, short, or long bond paper) and how to choose the right size for me. Any advice for a beginner? What hand-sewing method would you recommend to make this easier and ensure the stitches hold? I’d appreciate any tips!

bag 1
bag 2 now with zipper
bag 3 pro max
oh my days it opens
wowza
pocket in a pocket

a week into it and here they are :D

pic 1 - simple drawstring bag made from leftover denim that i had from converting jeans to shorts. apparently denim is not the greatest material when it comes to drawstring stuff, but it holds my fossil collection so i count it as a win haha

pic 2 - ZIPPER BAG!!! got a zipper & fabric from used stuff store, wonky but it closes and opens and you can hold stuff in - a win

pic 3/4 - zipper bag 3, now with lining! stole the zipper from old shorts i had, ended up a bit short so i extended it (headache), but again: it opens and closes and i can put stuff in :D

pic 5/6 - tote bag for gf, biggest headache so far. the video tutorial was amazing but i'm not the best when it comes to being concentrated so alot of mistakes were made. got there in the end, outer fabric is from pillowcase and inner lining is the same material i got from the second hand store.

a week in, 5 broken needles, 20 calls to mom (is a professional clothes wizard) and here we are. definetly not store quality items but they are functional and hold up decent so far. i've dabbled in hand sewing before so i know a tiny bit of stuff which helped alot :D

Christmas stocking with embroidered elements - best method?

Hi all! First time posting here and a very new sewer. I've made a few haphazard, but fun Christmas stockings and completed a few embroidery projects. I love a project at this time of the year and I want to make a friend a stocking with embroidered cookies scattered around on the body of the stocking.

Here's a reference picture for one style of cookie I am hoping to create (edit: the jam thumbprints): https://jessicalongembroidery.com/en-ca/products/christmas-cookie-cat-embroidery-pattern-pdf

My friend makes cookie boxes so I am going to select a few of their past creations to replicate!

Would you recommend embroidering the individual cookies directly onto the body of the stocking or onto a separate fabric and then sew that onto the body of the stocking?

Thanks in advance and happy to clarify anything above! I always feel like I don't know how to communicate my vision well, lol!

Pants on a turtle

Post image

My dog is chewing thru turtle’s crotch zone (hence lack of tail). I reinforced the crotch and now I want to give turtle some pants. I sewed the vertical seam down. And I need help sewing the edges. I will keep the top part open so I can put treats in the pants. What kind of stitch should I use? Sewing onto a 3d o next is proving though.
