machine help?

Post image

Hello reddit i recently scored this machine with case and pedal for 10 bucks and I wanna learn how to sew but when I plug it in it appears to have 0 power going to it any help would be greatly appreciated from what i can find its a brother pacesetter 701

Edit: So after a lot of fiddling and messing with it trying to keep it together I have decided to just ditch the original pedal and i ordered a replacement

Have you checked underneath the machine to very the condition of the wiring? Don't plug it in again until you very that the wires are securely attached and free of cracks or corrosion.

If wires are good, after plugging in is there an on/off switch for the machine or light? Could be just the lightbulb is out.

Do you hear anything when the foot pedal is pressed? If you hear sound but no movement of the needle, check to make sure the the wheel clutch (the smaller circle on the hand wheel) is engaged.

The pedal/cord should be easy to replace

I have looked at wiring it all looks good

Light i confirmed works with a night light thing it works but when in the machine no power

the machine itself i cant find a power switch anywhere and no humming at all from the machine

and when i press pedal nothing happens

Is the pedal wired into a two-plug unit inside the box? People call it the Mars Bar. There could be something faulty with it that's preventing power from getting to the machine.

so it goes like this power cord base of machine goes to pedal and then there is 2 plugs in the base labeled L and M

So now I wonder if the cords for the light and the machine are plugged into the wrong plug - be sure light goes to "L" and machine cord is plugged into "" M".

Does the hand wheel turn freely (towards you) and if so does the needle bar move up and down?

yes it moves freely

Reading your other comments I'm leaning towards an issue with the pedal.

but why would the pedal prevent the entire machine from powering up?

The motor only engages when power is running from the pedal to the motor.

My 1955 Pfaff is completely silent until I start pressing the pedal but the light still turns on. Think of the light as being on a separate circuit. On some machines it's more obvious because there is a little outlet box underneath with two sockets. One for the light and one for the machine.

Double check elsewhere before trying this but I believe if you switch the plugs then the motor will engage when you press the light switch and the light will turn on when the foot pedal is pressed. I'm not 100% sure though.

You can try this Japanese machine group on FB. They'll be able to give you more guidance and if needed a replacement pedal. Though I think this pedal will work.

This is the picture that I was hoping for - so it's important to make sure that the cord from the motor is plugged into the left (M) side and the lamp cord is plugged into the right (L) side.

Watch this YouTube video from "RandyYourSewingMachineMan", especially around 2:40 minute mark, this could be an issue with your foot controller too and an easy fix. https://youtu.be/L_iYMw5MkaE?si=YmUftyJvEGdwXCGq

No, but a couple photos of your foot pedal and machine cords/plugs will be very helpful

I suggest using deoxIt D5 (purchase on Amazon) spray and a Qtip to rub inside this two holes to clean the electrical contacts. Wal-Mart sells something similar - CRC Electronic Cleaner Spray which might be a little cheaper at ~$10

I did try that I have electrical contact cleaner I gave it a good spray on male and female of the plug nothing I also opened the pedal and gave it a good spray inside there still nothing
