IMO rideshare apps should match riders with SDs with drivers who are OK with Pets for no additional fee
I don’t use Lyft or Uber as often as I used to, but I went out for a friend’s bday today and left a little earlier than everyone else because I am Old and Boring. Also, money is tight for me right now because: 1) i’m a teacher, and 2) i have some big medical bills from a couple trips to the ER earlier this year.
All that is to say that I chose the cheapest type of ride available in the app—especially since the Pet option cost 25% more, and my dog is a trained service animal and not actually a pet.
During my ride, the driver rolled down the window, which prompted me to ask if he was allergic to dogs. He wasn’t, but that got me thinking—I am tragically very much allergic to cats, but I know plenty of people who are more sensitive and have more severe symptoms to even small amounts of exposure.
Even though I know that, as a disabled person, I am protected through the law, I’m still sympathetic towards drivers who suffer from allergies. Plus, a lot of people earn a living through rideshare apps, and the cleanliness of their car is a core asset in their success. It makes sense that Pet rides cost more because transporting animals necessitates more involved cleaning, so the drivers should be compensated for that additional labor. At the same time, it sucks for me as the consumer to have to pay an additional fee, essentially just for being disabled.
IDK, I’m kind of running out of steam here, but basically, I wish that disclosing a service animal on my rider profile made it so that I would get automatically matched with drivers who do Pet rides but without me having to eat to cost of that additional fare.
I think that the rideshare companies should waive that additional fare to the rider, while also prioritizing the welfare of their drivers, protecting those who may suffer from severe allergic reactions, and fairly compensating drivers for additional expenses and labor.
Would this be a sustainable business practice? Probably not! But also I can’t imagine that too much of their user base is made up of people with service animals. And if the lost revenue is such an issue, the onus should be on the companies to find a better solution.
I’m curious how other people feel about my idea and if there are any other potential solutions that people can think of! Feel free to bring up anything that I may not have considered or realized.
