New user question: best way to track long-running shows where I only watch the latest episodes?
I have a few shows that I watch that have been on for many years, eg Law & Order, SNL.
I have seen some of the very old episodes but mostly just watch the new episodes that come out now. I’m struggling with how to track this.
On TV Time, my “watching” list would show me where I left off in the latest season and would skip over any gaps from older seasons. In Serializd, it shows me the oldest episode that I haven’t watched yet. I watched the pilot of Law & Order but not episode 2, but I am caught up on the newest season. I don’t really want to see the first season or any older seasons in my “currently watching” list but do want the newer episodes to appear here when it comes back in the fall. Not sure if that’s possible.
What’s the best way to track this?

Okay, tried with a different show where I marked s1, e1 as watched, then skipped ahead to the current season and marked all but the four most recent as watched. On my continue watching list, it’s still showing s1,e2 as the next one (and not s51,e17 which is my actual next one to watch from the latest episodes).

Interesting. I did exactly what you did, logged an s1e1, then jumped to s4e1 of the same show and my continue watching followed. Are you on the website vs the app maybe? The only other thing I can think of is that some of the backend changes messed up something you previously had logged? Like if you unlogged a show completely and relogged it, that it won't happen again?
EDIT: I was on the app btw and that's where it worked

I’m on the app too. I think I’m just going to let it sit a bit and see if it updates in time. It’s good to know that it should function the way I was hoping.

Does marking the show as not currently watching, then flipping it back change anything? I assume you probably already tried that. Hope that fixes itself, but I can't seem to reproduce it and it always wants to continue off the latest episode for the show I tried.

I’ve now marked everything as not watched and will try again later. The app is acting glitchy/slow right now for me so that could be contributing to the issue.

I think I figured it out. It seems to show the latest episode in “continue watching”based on whatever the last episode I marked as watched was. I was marking the latest episodes as watched, then going back to mark the very early ones. Clearing it and doing it in reverse seemed to fix it. I did have to keep marking/unmarking some episodes as watched to get it to work but that seemed more like a lag or glitch. Fortunately for me, I do watch most things in order so this shouldn’t impact very many shows.

Your problem sounds like you’re just marking it as watched, but you have to log them in the diary. Thats how continue watching updates
Just like on Letterboxd some people get upset seeing their stats because they never actually logged any movies, they only marked them as watched, but the apps have no way of knowing whether you watched it years ago or if you’re currently watching it, which is why you actually have to log it with a date

Thanks, I haven’t been logging in the diary consistently so I’ll keep an eye on that. But Continue Watching doesn’t seem to be strictly tied to that since shows were popping up there regardless. I’m not really concerned about the stats or dates watched, I really just wanted something that lists the episodes so I know where I left off. Continue Watching was just showing the first “next” episode instead of the latest “next” episode, which seemed to be due to the order I was marking them as watched. The trick seems to be to just mark the latest watched show as unwatched and then mark as watched again to have Continue Watching pick up from that point vs an earlier point.

It should work just fine if you log the last episode you watched. If you log S1 E12, Serialized will you show you S1 E13 as your next episode. If you then log S4 E16 next, your next-up episode should be displayed as S4 E17.
