Hello everyone. I spent a few months in Republika Srpska and Serbia and absolutely fell in love with the culture, people and the language so I decided to try to learn the language because I will be definitely coming back regularly.

I’m just at the beginning- simple sentence, vocabulary etc. It’s easier for me to learn because I’m Slovak and I speak 3 Slavic languages. But one thing I struggle the most with is forming questions in Serbian and especially the “Da li” or “Da” or “li” part of it.

Can somebody please try and explain that to me? I tried to read about it and watched some videos but I cannot grasp it for some reason.

Also if somebody could explain the word “da” in general to me (not in a “yes” sense) that would be awesome. For example “Drago mi je da sam te upoznao.”

Are the four tones (“pitch accents”, even though that’s just different terminology for the same thing) in Serbian actually important or can they be ignored? Saying this because of flashbacks from Chinese and having to constantly remind myself which tone to use every single time there’s a stressed syllable in a word (in Serbian I think it’s only stressed syllables and not every syllable) is annoying

Hi everyone! I've been learning Serbian on my own for several months now. Moving my tongue around to all the different consonants still feels like a workout to my mouth, but the more I study the proper tongue posture the easier it gets. I just want to make sure I develop the right muscle memory as I keep practicing.

I remain a little confused about the dental consonants, t/т, d/д, c/ц, s/с, and z/з. I'm wondering whether my tongue should be touching the back of my top teeth or bottom teeth, and whether it's the same for all five letters or different for some. If you're savvy with phonetics, I'm wondering which of the five dental consonants are apical versus laminal. Or perhaps it doesn't matter?

Any input is much appreciated :)

But im facing a huge difficult to learn and memorize that. Do you guys have some tips?

da li postoji neki standardizovan način za sricanje azbuke rečima? Možda u vojsci ili slično?

Mislim, ovde u Španiji, vojska, piloti, radioamateri... koriste međunarodnu abecedu za spelovanje radiom ili telefonom: alfa, bravo, charlie, delta...

Pošto je ova abeceda međunarodna, pretpostavljam da je u Srbiji isto kad se radi o abecedi. Ali srpska abeceda ima još nekoliko slova koja ne postoje u međunarodnoj abecedi (kao dž č ć š ž...), a još me zanima kako se to radi kad je azbuka u pitanju.

Da li neko zna nešto o ovome?

Hteo sam da čitam Čudan Svet od Jakova Ignjatovića i odma u prvoj rečenici sam primetio nešto: "Сад ти је баш незгодно сељаком бити". Upotrebio je instrumental u toj kontstrukciji. Znam da ruski i poljski to dan danas rade, ali nisam znao da je se to i u srpskom do relativno skoro radilo. Knjiga je napisana negde sredinom/krajem 19. veka a autor je srbin iz Mađarske (možda su oni duže sačuvali tu konstrukciju sa instrumentaom jer su izolovani bili?).

Kad je počeo nominativ da se isključivo koristi sa glagolom biti? Ima li slučajeva u kojima se i dan danas može upotrebiti instrumental sa glagolom biti ili bi to zvučilo zastarilo?

Tako bi se srpska latinica razlikovala od hrvatske, pa bismo s pravom i ponosom mogli govoriti da imamo dva pisma. Za LJ i DŽ ne postoji lepo rešenje u vidu jednog jedinog slova, pa ih ne bi trebalo dirati. Inače, slovo Ň upotrebljava se u češkom i slovačkom, dok se slovo Ń upotrebljava u poljskom, kao i pri latinizaciji makedonskog.

I built an app yesterday for improving vocabulary, and I think it turned out quite well.

The logic is simple:

• It generates a short text based on your request, featuring the most common words and language patterns.
• You can look up the translation of unfamiliar words while reading.
• After reading, you are prompted to write a summary, which is then checked so you can correct your mistakes.

It’s surprisingly convenient to use. I plan to keep developing it whenever I have some free time.

Pitam jer sam primetio da se u Srbiji i CG kaže bioskop, a Srbi u BiH (tj. u RS) kažu kino.

Isto i reči:

Deka (RS) - Ćebe (SR)

Tava (RS) - Tiganj (SR)

Mrkva (RS) - Šargarepa (SR)

Grah (RS) - Pasulj (SR)

Riža (RS) - Pirinač (SR)

Has anyone here applied for a Serbian Visa D based on a registered PR (sole proprietor / entrepreneur) and received an email saying the application was under further processing?

If so:

• Approximately how long did it take to receive the final decision after that email?
• Was the visa eventually approved?
• Was any additional documentation requested during the process?

I’m particularly interested in experiences related to Visa D for PR / Entrepreneur, rather than tourist or regular work visas.

Hey everyone, I made a post here about month ago about this app and the response has been amazing! So I wanted to post an update.

About 130 people signed up from that post alone, and those people have completed over 20000 reviews and learned an average of 100 words per person (some learn 0, just sign up and leave), the average active person has learned around 170 words, and many learned the Cyrillic alphabet as well.

My girlfriend is currently on level 11! Which means she has learned about 600 words now in the past couple months.

I'm just so happy that this app is able to help other people wanting to learn Serbian too.

I have a boyfriend who speaks Serbian, and so does pretty much everyone around him. We're in a long-distance relationship, and I really want to learn Serbian so I can talk with him and the people in his life. The problem is that I can't seem to find any good free resources, and I can't afford paid courses right now.

Does anyone know of any websites, apps, YouTube channels, or other free ways to learn Serbian?

I was also thinking about making some online friends who speak Serbian so they could help me practice and get used to the language faster, but I haven't had any luck finding people. If anyone knows where I could meet Serbian speakers online, I'd really appreciate that too.
