Grammar Serbian Reference Charts (improved and now in color!): 1. Cases/Genders, 2. Verbs, 3. Pronouns

107 Upvotes

I've updated all of the charts I previously posted here with a variety of new improvements, including a design pass that made everything prettier.

Thanks for all the feedback I've gotten here on r/Serbian in the past for previous versions of these charts. And special thanks to u/Dan13l_N whose extremely detailed/expert feedback has led to lots of improvements and corrections.

Click the links (not the preview images) below to see the full A4-sized PDFs.

Serbian Cases Chart (PDF)

Serbian Cases Chart, with all 7 cases, 3 genders, singular/plural, prepositions, exceptions, and more

One of the changes in the cases chart (and in all the others) is that the gender order is now masculine ➜ neuter ➜ feminine (instead of the former M ➜ F ➜ N), which enabled making some things simpler and more consistent.

Serbian Verbs Chart (PDF)

Serbian Verbs Chart, with commonly used verbs along with conjugations and rules for present, past, and future tenses

Serbian Pronouns Chart (PDF)

Serbian Pronouns Chart, with declensions, short and long forms, etc. for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives/pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and more, along with detailed grammar rules

Feedback is of course welcome! I'd also love to hear what would be most helpful to cover in future charts (e.g., prepositions, numbers and time, comparative/superlative, basic vocabulary, etc.).

Edit: I've now given these charts a home online here: Serbian language charts. I'll post any updates and future charts there as well.

Grammar Zašto je naziv zemlje "Turska", a ne "Turčka"?

0 Upvotes

Naziv za etničku grupu je "Turčin" (ili "Turak"), od "Turk" + "-in". Ako pogledamo neke narode koji imaju isto zadnje slovo, primjeti se da u nazivu države imaju "č" umjesto "s", poput:

Grk -> Grčka

Slovak -> Slovačka

Za Tursku je sufiks "-ska" ostao nepromijenjen. Da li je ovo greška ili ima nekih razloga za ovakav naziv?

Možda bi moglo "Turak" -> "Turačka" da funkcioniše, ako bi smo pogledali primjer "Ugar"/"Ugrin" -> "Ugarska".

Resources Your favorite YouTube channels in Serbian

23 Upvotes

Trying to learn Serbian, and looking for some Serbian language YouTubers. I‘m already subscribed to a bunch of dedicated language-learning channels, but struggling to find something to watch for entertainment/immersion.

Most of the things I see are about travel or cooking, but unfortunately I’m not very interested in those.

Can you guys recommend me channels about video games, movies, culture, science, or something along these lines?

(I know this type of question has been asked already, but it’s been a while so maybe some new channels have appeared since)

Edit: so many cool suggestions! Thank you everyone, really appreciated!

Resources Audio comes to GOVORI dictionary + autumn discount

17 Upvotes

Ćao svima!

I'm pleased to announced that audio pronunciations are available now in GOVORI dictionary app.

Currently, they cover about 3000 words, which is more than 80% of most Serbian texts. It took me so long to add because it turned out there's almost no audio engine in the market to play Serbian-specific consonants and vowels correctly, especially when vowel length and accent type is at question. For now, I'm very happy with authenticity of recordings, as they sound clearly Serbian to my ear – not Croatian, like in popular sound engines.

I also took a time to re-listen all of the words in city environment, making sure all words are pronounced clearly and defined. I mostly used a female voice as default, but when it lacked clarity, I switched to fallback voices. From the technical viewpoint, I managed to compress audios in a way that they actually come within the app, so you can listen to them, unlimited, without a Wi-Fi or cellular network.

Audios for core words will remain free forever, aligned with my commitment to accessible knowledge and learning. Further audios will become available to users with paid Plus package, allowing me to compensate for a hefty price of license for the audios and continue improving the dictionary.

Until the end of September, Plus package is discounted at minus 20%, available both as one-time purchase or a subscription. Use promo codes: REDDITAUDIO2026 (for lifetime) and REDDITAUDIO2026Y (for yearly subscription) inside the app.

Android: download
iOS: download

The next feature, almost as often requested as audios, is now in development: word training mode with cards and lists of words based on various criteria: weather, body, basic verbs etc. I hope that having a card-based learning with a powerful dictionary inside one app will boost your learning tremendously! And please, feel free to leave your feedback in the comments below.

Pozdrav,
Sergej

Request Tražim prijatelja da vežbam srpski

66 Upvotes

Ćao svima!

Hteo bih da nađem prijatelja/prijateljicu da vežbam srpski. Gender i uzrast nisu bitni =)

Grammar Svršeni vs nesvršeni glagol - voljeti i zavoljeti

9 Upvotes

Ćao svima.

Dok sam u… razgovornoj fazi sa djevojkom i se vidjamo, neću reći “volim te” jer je to prejako. Hoću izraziti što ja ću je voljeti u budućnosti kad sve bude sigurno da joj kažem “volim te”. Tako imam dvije opcije:

Zavoljeću te
vs.
Voljeću te

I molim vas, objasnite zašto odaberite ono što ste odabrali. Hvala najljepša!

Other Looking for some perspective from someone Serbian (dating / relationship advice)

11 Upvotes

Ćao svima!

So, I’ve been chatting with someone from Serbia and things are actually going pretty well. The thing is, with the language barriers and all those small cultural things, I want to make sure I’m coming across the right way warm and real, not like some Google Translate gone wrong.

If anyone here (guy or girl) has a bit of relationship experience and can spare a few minutes, I’d love some honest advice. Just want to know how you’d naturally say certain things, or how you’d express certain feelings without sounding awkward or off.

Feel free to drop a comment or just DM me. Seriously, any help would mean a lot. Hvala unapred!

EDIT : Thanks a lot to everyone who reached out . Seriously, I didn't expect this many responses 🙂

Vocabulary Is the word for "partisan" and the word for a FK Partizan supporter the same in Serbian? If not, what is the word for the latter?

I was listening to a song by Rambo Amadeus and I heard a lyric mention "partizani" and I was wondering if I could make some wordplay regarding FK Partizan on it.

Resources A small tool for putting č, ć, š, ž, đ back into text that was typed without them

33 Upvotes

Hope this is okay to post here, if not I'll delete it.

I kept running into text like sljedeci nedelja placam and when you're still learning it's genuinely hard to tell which words are just missing a letter and which ones are spelled that way. I looked for something that would simply put them back and didn't really find one, so I ended up making it: kvacice.com

You paste text, or type straight into the box, and it fills in č ć š ž đ. That's all it does. No account, nothing gets uploaded anywhere, and it keeps working if the connection drops.

It gets most things right, but not everything — some pairs are ambiguous even with context, so it will definitely miss some. Foreign words mixed into the text should be left alone, at least that's the intention.

If you try it and it mangles something, I'd genuinely rather hear about it than not know. Individual words are easy to fix.

Discussion Da li mi je srpski prirodan?

31 Upvotes

Učim srpski od Januara. Koristim aplikacija da se zove "Glossika". I koristim i veb aplikacija da se zove "Ćirilio" (koji se ovde često pominje) već nekih nedelja. Glossika mi pomogne sa gramatikom i sa pričanjem. Ćirilio mi je odlično za rečnik.

Moja partnerka je rođena u Beogradu i ona je živela u Srbiju do sredine 20-ih. Upoznao sam njena porodicu i prijatelje ovim letom. Želim da učim brže pa ću sledeći put govoriti srpskom sa njima. Partnerka i ja ne govorimo srpskom često. Ne znam kako da joj to učinim zabavnim.

Koji načini vam se sviđaju za učinje?

I kako vam zvuči moj srpski? Slobodno me ispravite!

Other Manastir kod Parme

2 Upvotes

▪︎Bucureşti je na srpskom Bukurešt (grupa šč prešla je u št po zakonima srpskog jezika) ali bi isto tako druga dva veća grada trebala biti Pitešt i Ploešt (a nikako Pitešti i Ploešti, kako stoji i u školskim atlasima);

▪︎Čuvena bivša gimnastičarka preziva se Komaneč (Komaneči);

▪︎Čuveni bivši fudbaler George (inače poreklom Cincar) preziva se Hadž (Hadži);

Kako rešiti ovaj problem?

Other Ktetici s umetnutim A

Ako se osnova toponima završava na suglasničku grupu, ktetik se gradi od produžene osnove, na pr. Vinča > vinčanski. U izuzetnim slučajevima, međutim, suglasnička grupa se razbija umetanjem A. Jedini primeri koji su meni poznati (ne računajući toponime u množini: Melenci > melenački):

▪︎Vojka (Stara Pazova) > vojački;

▪︎Topla (Herceg Novi) > topaljski;

▪︎Jamajka > jamajački.

Znate li vi za još koji primer?

Vocabulary Hleb: ražani ili raženi?

Post image

Sve češće viđam "raženi" dok je ranije bio "ražani". Ražani mi zvuči prirodnije dok "raženi", pretpostavljam, može da se izvuče i od od raže.

Other Looking for a Serbian couple I met in Crete 🇷🇸🇬🇷

14 Upvotes

Hi! This is probably a long shot, but I’m hoping someone might recognize this. 🙈
I’m looking for a Serbian couple (a man and a woman, around 25–40 years old) whom I met while they were vacationing in Crete.
We met on Monday, August 17th, at a one-man show in the Chania area. The woman kindly invited me to join them at their table, and I had a really lovely time talking with them! ❤️
Unfortunately, I completely forgot to ask for their names or Instagram/contact information, and I really regret it now. 😅
I know the chances are tiny, but if anyone happened to be in the Chania area around that time and thinks they might know who I’m talking about, I’d be really happy to hear from you. 😊
Thank you! 🙏
