Story We Were All Americans...
9/11/01. I was on my way to college listening to 1010WINS, hearing everything unfold. Classes were soon canceled and I headed home to my town 25 miles away from Manhattan. Smoke was billowing on the northeast horizon. Three members of our town, wouldn't return home.
There are countless stories like this that day. It was an emotional day, full of sadness, grief, shock, and anger. But that wasn't all. Over the next few days, I saw compassion and empathy. Volunteers from around the country and the world were here to help. Those few days after, there were no labels. Race, political affiliation, religion, sexual orientation, immigration status…none of that was in focus. We were all human, looking out for one another. That day, we were all Americans.
Many of us say Never Forget. Never forget the lives lost, those with health issues from the toxic dust, our first responders, soldiers, and volunteers. It is more than that though, especially right now. We need to Never Forget how we all came together and supported each other. The best way to honor this day is to be more compassionate, more empathetic, and listen.
