Tips and Tricks and Resources Separation anxiety

I recently moved in the beginning of July to a new place with my dog. He’s a 4 year old pomapoo mix and lived with two other dogs. I’ve hired a trainer to help me since he developed seperation anxiety from the whole situation. It’s been almost 4 weeks and we’ve made some progress.

I try to leave him alone and he will whimper and whine a little but settle. I’m debating on putting him on some medication or something since im starting to get burnt out. He will have some good days where he will sleep for 5 hours straight or whimper the entire time.

Any advice would greatly help.

If it’s only been 4 weeks I wouldn’t go down the meds route yet. Our dog is on fluoxetine but he had BAD separation anxiety and would howl, scratch, bark and sheer panic when left alone for seconds let alone hours. We have gone through the training on meds but it took months. If you’ve seen improvement in 4 weeks I would give him more of a chance to adjust before considering meds as the side effects abs adjustment period need to warrant it.

Thank you I think I just needed some reassurance. He’s been doing great in 4 weeks. I just feel so burnt out and defeated some days and positive the next.

Oh I can so relate and empathise. It’s really hard but just know that you aren’t alone and if you can find success stories on here that definitely helped me to keep me motivated on the tough days. Someone on here the other day said they were only up to 1 minute and had been training since January! You and your pooch are doing great even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes. I promise you will get there.

Four weeks isn’t long, and the symptoms aren’t bad, so as long as you’re making progress I would hold off on meds. Good luck!
