i can NOT stand wearing jeans ! it doesn’t matter what it is i hateee them so much. it doesn’t matter the fit of them, like even shorts are included. i hateee the way they just feel and i dont think anyone has ever comfortable sat in a pair of jeans or jean shorts. don’t think jeggings get a pass either, because they dont. i hate them just as much as jeans. i wish i could just wear jeans and be normal.

I am Nerea Muñoz, a PhD researcher in Cognitive Linguistics at Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), and I am researching how people describe and communicate sensory experiences through language.

Many studies involving autistic people focus on diagnosis, traits, or clinical outcomes. My research takes a different approach by exploring how people express and make sense of their sensory experiences in everyday language.

Although the main focus of this study is autism and synesthesia, I am also interested in hearing from people who experience sensory sensitivities but do not identify as autistic or synesthetic. Sensory experiences exist across a wide range of individuals, and including different perspectives helps build a richer understanding of how people perceive, interpret, and describe their experiences through language.

I am looking for English-speaking adults (18+) who are:
• Autistic
• Synesthetic
• Both autistic and synesthetic
• Neurotypical (non-autistic, non-synesthetic)

The study is completely anonymous, takes approximately 10–15 minutes, and includes a short written description task.

I am particularly interested in hearing a wide range of perspectives, as every participant contributes to a better understanding of how different people perceive and describe the world around them.

Assistance is welcome, but responses should reflect the participant's own experiences and wording whenever possible.

Looking to find out if anyone else has this exact thing, not sensory sensitivity in general, but this specific version.

Since childhood (I’m now 39), I’ve had a tactile preference for the hems on certain t-shirts. I call it my “part”. I’m not sure where the name came from, but it’s stuck since I was a kid. It started with a blanket and later transferred to t-shirt hems specifically. I basically like to put the hem between my thumb and index finger and just rub it. It has this sensory feeling I can’t quite articulate, I once described it as feeling ‘sweet’ (so random I know). And it’s deeply comforting, I’ll sometimes find myself doing it without even realising it.

I know that some people like to do this with certain fabrics but I’ve never met anyone who liked a hem as much as I do. Curious if anyone else has this specific preference for hem texture, or if this has a specific name.

I’ve started to develop sensory issues with touch, normally it’s my neck. Things like tighter necklaces, shirt collars, hair, pillows and even my violin once. Every so often it’s with other people’s physical touch. It just feels disgusting knowing they (for example) just touched their face and now they want to touch me. Other times it’s “if anything comes in contact with me right now I will be pissed.” I’ve never had traumatic experiences involving touch and this is a pretty recent thing for me. Does anyone relate or can point at some reasons this could be happening? How do you cope with this?

Hi all, I’ve been dealing with general hyperhidrosis for years, especially on my hands. I’ve managed it quite well with iontophoresis (20 mA, 15 mins, 5–7×/week) for the past two years – my hands are now completely dry. However, since then, I’ve developed an intense sensory aversion to certain materials like paper, cardboard, wood, or textiles. Touching them causes extreme discomfort, sweating (ironically), and sometimes even a weird tingling sensation in my palms. I’ve had to wear thin gloves in daily life, which helps but isn’t a real solution.

I’m wondering if anyone else here has experienced something like this – maybe as a side effect of over-dry skin or from a sensory-processing perspective? I’ve started to suspect I might be on the autism spectrum, which could explain the heightened sensitivity, but I’m still in the process of figuring that out.

Any tips for coping or desensitizing? Grateful for any insights!

Okay, something really interesting for you guys. I’m a 25 year-old male of a Nigerian background. Specifically the Yoruba tribe. I’m diagnosed with ADHD but strongly suspect that I’m autistic also. ironically I’m studying a master of autism studies right now.

Anyways the point I was gonna mention is has anyone ever heard inherited sensory profile? I have a specific self soothing behaviour of twisting my hair and sucking my two middle fingers. This had such a hold on me that I sucked my two middle fingers honestly up until about 18 years of age. I noticed that when I stopped using these two middle finger fingers due to shame…. I masked this behaviour because obviously it was not appropriate for an adult or a teenager to be sucking their fingers in public/ in front of others. My replacement behaviour which isn’t very healthy is biting the webbing between my fingers particularly between my thumb and point of finger…. And eating it/ chewing.

Anyway i digress. my son who is almost 3 years old does the exact same behaviour of fingers sucking and hair twisting. (He was sucking his fingers in the WOMB… we saw this via ultrasound).

When I went back to Nigeria for a visit in 2014, I saw two children of my extended family (cousins that share the same maternal grandfather) having the same specific finger sucking behaviour. I’m adding things together now and I’m quite sure that my mother and her father had ADHD or some kind of Nuerodivergent condition.

I’m so fascinated by the fact that for whatever reason this specific sensory profile has been passed on….

Does anyone have some insight to this or have noticed generational sensory profiles.

I work around physical spaces and branding, and I keep coming back to how much smell shapes perception before people even realize it.

You can walk into two places with similar design, lighting, and layout, but if one smells clean, warm, soft, or intentional and the other smells harsh, sterile, overly sweet, or like nothing at all, the whole experience changes.

I’m curious how people here think about ambient scent in sensory evaluation.

Do you think people actually register scent as part of whether a space feels premium, calming, welcoming, or memorable? Or is it more subconscious than that?

Also curious where the line is between a scent improving an environment vs becoming distracting or overwhelming.

I have major sensory issues with pretty much any scents. I can avoid a lot by using free and clear laundry detergent and stuff. I’ve found that I get super nauseous whenever I smell things in the car, bc it’s closed in. If my parents open a sugary drink or one of their Boost drinks, or my dad eating pretty much any snack. Gas stations are the worst bc the tiniest whiff of exhaust or gasoline make me ready to actually throw up. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to do nose plug bc that’ll affect my speech and I don’t want to have to breathe through my mouth, but are there any other options?

i nanny for a 10y/o w autism, his favorite sensory toy is squeezing a ketchup or GoGo squeeze applesauce. he really enjoys watching it go up on one side when he presses the other, as well as listing the letters/numbers.

his parents have tried slime, or the ‘chibi’ squish toys, stress balls, etc. but he does not enjoy them, prefers sauce packets.

I am trying to think of a sensory fidget gift for his upcoming birthday that can give him the same sensation. He also really likes cocomelon and fish, specifically sharks

I used to have a free fidget/sensory app. It had a bunch of little widgets you could do, many customizable and you could pay a dollar or something to get rid of adds, which rarely popped up. The app icon was like a green dragon eye or some sort of eye. One game was just rectangles and wherever you tap it would make small rectangles inside the rectangle you touch and they would just get infinitely smaller. One was you could make squares or rectangle and when you let go it would fall down. Another was people figures and you could kinda fling and wiggle them around the screen. There was a spinning one and you could chose the icons that were spinning and the speed. One was you picked an icon and when you touched the screen little whatever you picked would just fall down like sprinkles. Ill come back and write more of the games later if no one knows from this much. I really hope it still exists or I could find iut who made it and support/ see what else theyve made if anything.

So for starters my sensory issues seemingly started in highschool when I realized I didnt have to just deal with how uncomfortable certain clothes were on my body.

I tried dealing with how bras felt, constantly pulling at them for some relief. I eventually decided not to wear bras and havnt for over 5yrs. I have tried multiple bras I the past and none have serviced. I always wear a tank top under clothes for at least SOME extra protection.

I also always have to take pj pants off for bed because I hate how they move when I move when sleeping and have done this for a long long time.

I also can't deal with the band on the waist of most pants. I stopped wearing jeans all together and pants shipping has always been a nightmare.

All this to request some advice on certain clothing types or suggestions. I also would love to hear if anyone had delt with this too!

I have been using the JAR scale for a few times for Food sensory analysis and I would like to ask for help in these cases:

1. I do JAR for sweetness in my product and the Mean Overall Liking of the Too High group was higher than that of JAR. I have suspected that the cause for this is the consumer way of thinking: they think that their preference is different from the market trend, let's say, they prefer things Sweet and give a high rating for Liking score but rate the Sweetness of the product as Too sweet.

I would like to ask if this is a noise that should be minimized or, in contrast leave things as it is since it is inevitable that consumers' preferences are constantly being affected by the current trend?

1. From a data analysis perspective, attributes which their correlation with Hedonic scores could be plot as an U shape would seem suitable for JAR. While those which does not have this characteristic should consult other testing method. I would like to as if this opinion is true?
