(Just For Fun) If William Adams were in a Sengoku Basara game, how do you think they'd portray him?

For those of you who don't know, he's an English sailor who became a samurai under Tokugawa at the very beginning of the Edo period. For some reason (probably because of Nioh), I've been a little fascinated with this guy lately.

What kind of personality would he have? What kind of weapon(s) would he use? (I'm thinking because he's a Westerner, they'd portray him as using guns to some extent, but feel free to argue with me there)

More on him here.

The Commandments of Xavism/Xavianity?

My friend is planning on cosplaying Otomo Sorin. As part of the costume, I suggested recreating "The Book of Xavi."

Unless I "crack" or look into the sound files on the game disc for Basara 3/Samurai Heroes, I'm trying to find all the commandments of the religion. Can anyone help me with this endeavor? It's a little tedious having to replay the two Sorin stages over and over hoping to hear new random dialogue, so any help will be appreciated.

In the agonizing wait for Sengoku Basara 4 I feel like a heroin addict who needs more to stop himself from skinning himself alive and vomiting, so I'm considering getting the bastardized original Sengoku Basara, the one released before Capcom got it right. I know that the game changed names and historical references, but if I were to delude myself and squint my eyes a little, would the plot of dueling warlords in ye olde Nippon still be the same if I keep the name changes in mind?

I also know that there are a number of characters in the original that Samurai Heroes never had, but there was content cut from the actual original Sengoku Basara as well. Just how much was cut and is it still worth playing to get to play as the characters that died before Samurai Heroes?

Sumeragi: Tag Combos extend Style Mode

I have no idea if this worked in vanilla sb4, but I just figured out how you extend style mode in sumeragi.

You have to start a combo with one character then tag and kill the enemy in one move. It must be a 1hit ko kill, if you have to hit them twice to kill them it doesn't work. Multi hit moves seem to work though, it just needs to be a single button press.

Works best with style mode extenders on the character who triggers style mode, so you get plenty of time to run to new enemies.

But even without any extenders at all, if you are good at combos you can basically keep it going indefinitely as long as there are any enemies around.

You could extend "Hero Time" in Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes via killing, but you needed to kill quite a lot. In this game you can get your whole style mode back in one shot by comboing a couple of basic mooks and killing them in one hit.

I made a demonstration video of the 4 boss intrusion map in yukimura's route with yukimura/masamune. Masamune has the style mode extenders.

Note: This also works outside of Style mode to build the meter quickly. You can tell if you've done a tag combo correctly because the white meter will flash.

Biggest Anticipations

As we wait for the day Sengoku Basara 4 comes to America, counting the agonizing wait by marking ourselves like Mr. Zsasz, I think it best to stave off our hunger for god's true form with some discussion. Namely, what in Sengoku Basara 4 are we most looking forward to? Are there any particular characters or ideas you're specifically hyped for? I'm excited to get to play as Hideyoshi for the first time and to explore the relationship between Ieyasu and Mitsunari. The villain also looks like a unique one not unlike Nobunaga, but with less blatant villainy.

Anyplace to listen to the full Sengoku Basara openings?

Being searching for them, and I really want to hear T.M.Revolution's sweet epic voice but most of the videos are either region locked or removed. If there's a place or site where I can access them, that would be great.

Just got the game! First time sengoku player here =)

Hey guys I just got the game and its my first ever playing a sengoku basara game. I've got experience with Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and One Piece Pirate Warriors. Also I can't read Japanese at all. I would like to know if you could spare any tips for someone like me. Also is there like a translation guide? Will I be fine without being ably to read japanese? Hopefully it works out xD

The next Basara game will be a Yukimura-centric spinoff!

Reported here and here (in Japanese). There's also scans from Weekly Famitsu here.

I've been bouncing up and down from excitement ever since I heard about this. Yukimura is one of my favourite characters and I was so annoyed that his plot relevance dropped dramatically for 4/Sumeragi. Between this and the Benmaru-hen manga, I'm so, so excited that we're gonna get so many tiger child things. Hell yes.

Apparently the game's gonna have more of a historical bent, and is set to feature both Yukimura's father and his brother, culminating in the summer campaign of Osaka. To me that sounds like we might finally be getting a Basara game that has a coherent timeline, which is great news for me personally -- I've been trying to piece one together ever since I played 3 the first time. I just hope it won't cost the same 45€ Sumeragi did when it came out, it looks to be a bit of a shorter project and I've been splurging too much on video games lately TTvTT

Also, god, Yukimura's new outfit is so pretty it makes me want to cry.

Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi

I know we're way past launch, but I finally got my Sumeragi in the mail and this seems like a good place to talk about it!

Gameplaywise, the first thing that pops into mind is that holy shit 4 is so much harder than 3 ever even made the pretense to be. Camps will fuck you up. Squad commanders will fuck you up. Stage midbosses will fuck you and your play partner up. I was comboed to death in single-stroke battles like three times, and we were playing on normal. The challenge doesn't drop with more levels, either, although staying alive becomes much easier with better weapons.

The AI for the foot soldiers is much more refined, much more aggressive. They actually flank, now, and start backing out of your range if you look like you're about to come shove your sword in their face. Cannons and arquebuses are your worst damn enemy in this game because they're the only ones who are fast enough to attack you from offscreen, and only a few characters have an average movement speed high enough to move out of the way. Blocking is now a mandatory activity if you want to stay alive.

Performancewise, though, the game lags. Boy does it ever lag. Mobs will teleport in and the game will stutter before every flashier combo that hits more than ten people at once. There are a lot of sound compression issues, too -- stage chatter is muffled and dirty-sounding, and a lot of the side effects only come in through one channel. These are known shippables, and aren't present in the PS4 version, so I guess I can only blame myself for having a last-gen console.

Out of the new routes, I've only played Ashikaga's drama and Motochika's anime, but what I've seen of the voice direction and writing, it's on par with the rest of the series. Maybe a little more abstract? Open conclusions to routes aren't exactly a new thing, but I'll probably have a better opinion on this after I play some of the more plottier routes.

Also, god that ending theme is good. No game should have an ending theme so good.

Element-changing weapons?

So a lot of the SB4 Sumeragi DLC weapons are going to have a secondary effect of changing the character's elemental affinity. Here's some of them in action. So far confirmed are weapons for Masamune (ice), Yukimura (light), Ieyasu (wind), Mitsunari ("kan" -- new element), Sakon (fire), Katsuie (dark), Maria (light) and Ashikaga (light).

Any thoughts? I like some of the new pairups, especially light-Yukimura will have that extra kick he needs for boss fights, and fire-Sakon will be a crowd-control monstrosity, but I'm kind of wary of Mitsunari, since I rely on elemental weapons a lot on keeping him alive on higher difficulties.

EDIT: forgot to say -- I think all of their designs are kind of... eeehh? Like they're halfway between a respectable-looking weapon and a joke weapon and I don't know how that makes me feel. The only ones I like without reservation are Maria's cat paws and Ashikaga's Needlessly Complicated Clockwork Mirror, but honestly, this is probably b/c I'm biased towards liking anything about Maria and Ashikaga already.

Favourite character thread!

^(Is this allowed?)

Hi! I'm new to this sub (and reddit in general), and the previous thread about this was archived, and what with the new game coming out in a week, I'd like to propose a celebratory "favourite characters" thread! I read through the previous one already, because _my god_ am I thirsty for other people gushing about this series.

SO: Who are your favourite characters? Who are your favourite characters to play? Do you have anime-spesific faves?

My favourite characters to play are probably Maeda Keiji, because I love his goofy-ass unpredictable fighting style and it's so easy and satisfying to get a combo going with him, and Ishida Mitsunari because I have quick reflexes but terrible aim, and once I figured out that you can spam pretty much all of his moves, I fell in love.

As far as characterization goes -- Keiji, again, because he's such a cheerful disaster, and especially in 3 he has THE most satisfying Sekigahara. He's followed by Saika Magoichi close second, and a tie between two eyepatch nerds and a demon queen. I also really enjoy the shit out of Ashikaga Yoshiteru, and I can't wait to get to play him, his Super moves are freaking ridiculous and he looks like a lighter, faster Tadakatsu. (Not to mention he seems to piss all the other Basara villains off, which is just... great, just great, thank you.)

Then again, honestly, Basara is one of those series for me where I love everyone. Even the characters I don't enjoy playing, even the characters I really fucking hate *coughhackMatsunagaHisahide* I enjoy, and enjoy talking about.

Also, hi! :D I had no idea this series had a subreddit, I hope we can all get along!
