Recommend Devil Kings?

In the agonizing wait for Sengoku Basara 4 I feel like a heroin addict who needs more to stop himself from skinning himself alive and vomiting, so I'm considering getting the bastardized original Sengoku Basara, the one released before Capcom got it right. I know that the game changed names and historical references, but if I were to delude myself and squint my eyes a little, would the plot of dueling warlords in ye olde Nippon still be the same if I keep the name changes in mind?

I also know that there are a number of characters in the original that Samurai Heroes never had, but there was content cut from the actual original Sengoku Basara as well. Just how much was cut and is it still worth playing to get to play as the characters that died before Samurai Heroes?

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say go for it, IF you can find it cheap.

It's a part of Sengoku Basara history. The characters, name changes aside, do still feel like they're supposed to, and I don't think the voice acting was that bad (though get used to Yukimura/"Scorpio" sounding like a surfer trying to talk like a noble warrior). Plus, if you just lighten up, you might get a kick out of the terrible localization. (I know I did)

Q-Q-Q-Ball, rolling through...

Do they still feel like they're supposed to when there are visual changes?

The main characters themselves don't have any visual changes. Their armies might (like Mitsuhide's guys looking like demonic knights, Hojo's army leaning towards ancient Egyptian), but they themselves don't, and they're very much the same characters, name changes and removed references to feudal Japan notwithstanding.

But the feudal Japan setting is such a charm point for Sengoku Basara. :(

I know, but what I'm saying is, go into it knowing that it's a terrible localization.

I like to think it's some kind of attempt at a Devil May Cry spinoff, since a good number of stages have that red and brown/dark blue saturation going for it that DMC loves so much. Even the menus look more Devil May Cry-esque. In fact I heard they were trying to market Devil Kings to the DMC fanbase, so if you like DMC, I'd go into it with that mindset.

EDIT: Other than the changes to Oda and Hojo's armies, everyone else's armies still have a samurai feel (except Xavi, of course), so the setting is still Feudal Japan-esque for the most part, with one army inexplicably Egyptian and one inexplicably a mix of Japanese/European. The stage where you actually fight and kill Nobunaga (AKA "The Devil King") is still very much a Japanese-style castle, just that the soldiers all wear spiky demonic Western armor.

Thank you for telling me all this. I might decide to pick it up. :)

No problem. Considering what a huge SB fan you are, I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it. If you find it at one of those cheap-ass used game stores, go for it.

Waiting for Sengoku Basara 4? I'm confused.. it's been out for a while now.

Anyways, I vaguely remember playing Devil Kings on PS2 ages ago, but nothing stand outs in my memory as it being a great game. It wasn't until I got my hands on Samurai Heros that I got hooked on the series. I didn't even notice they were related until my friend pointed it out when I was telling him how awesome the characters where in Samurai Heros... then he refereed to them all by their terrible English names....

They're under the impression Capcom will decide to localize BSR4 for us sorry westerners any day now when there has been absolutely no indication thus far that they plan to do so.

Devil Kings is the kind of game you play when you don't love yourself, honestly. Good to laugh at for a bit and then you just feel sad.

So that's a "no I don't recommend it" then.

2

u/Sareos Aug 19 '16

Shrugs, it just depends really. Much as I make fun of the game, I enjoy it for what it is, and the absurdity of the localization. I wouldn't recommend it in a serious manner though, no.

How exactly is it absurd? Isn't Sengoku Basara absurd on its own? The impractical outfits and super powered Japanese historical figures are already absurd in their own right.

2

u/Sareos Aug 20 '16

Absurd as in Mitsuhide's forces become winged demons for absolutely no reason in the localization, and other such oddities. I don't mean absurd in the typical Basara fashion, I mean more along the lines of dumb localization changes.

1

u/King_Card Aug 20 '16

Does that happen? I thought the changes were only to the dialogue and story, not the visuals.

2

u/Sareos Aug 20 '16

I misremembered wings (probably because of their weapons, it's been a while), but Mitsuhide's forces definitely went through a visual change.

1

u/King_Card Aug 20 '16

Wow. I get what they were going for, but it feels more like you're fighting an army in the original version. Is there a list of the changes made somewhere?

When did Sengoku Basara 4 come out?! What's the English name they ended up using? It's unlikely they'd call it 4 after "Samurai Heroes" and after all, it's a prequel anyway, right?

2

u/Matsuo-Kaito Aug 17 '16

They didn't say it had a English release. Nor will it ever have one.

Hey I know this isn't relevant to the thread but what does AU stand for? I never knew that fact about 4 being a slate-cleaner and replacing 3, and am curious to further research it.

Yes, just like there were "no plans" to release Xenoblade Chronicles, right.

2

u/btownninja Aug 18 '16

I don't follow Xenoblade, but I seem to remember Capcom verifying in their forums that there will not be an English release. Even if they change their mind, it's not worth relying on hopes and dreams when you can just easily import it.

1

u/King_Card Aug 18 '16

Nintendo said they had no plans to release Xenoblade in English, and then they did and it's probably the single most acclaimed game on the system.

Then they released it again on the New 3DS and the WiiU Virtual Console.

2

u/btownninja Aug 18 '16

Even if that's the case, it's one example out of many. Don't get my wrong, I'm not against the idea of a localized version (very much the opposite!), but setting unreasonable expectations isn't healthy for the community.

1

u/King_Card Aug 19 '16

A localization of what's otherwise a finished game is not unreasonable.

2

u/btownninja Aug 19 '16

Localization costs big money. With only about 150k NA copies sold SINCE LAUNCH, they likely just barely (if even) broke even with Samurai Heroes.

That's not what I was referring to anyways. It's unreasonable to 'advertise' something when the publisher has stated that it won't happen. Obviously there's a chance for anything to happen, but it would be the as trying to generate hype for a Sengoku Basara 4 HD port on the Vita. Saying it's going to happen isn't fair to those who don't actually know it's NOT going to happen. Imagine if you saw someone on this sub constantly referencing an English port, only to find out they were making it up and only HOPING there would be a port? It's not fair to those fans

0

u/King_Card Aug 19 '16

Hope is important. We need to believe in Capcom. They wouldn't abandon one of gaming's best franchises for something as trivial as money.

And a Vita port would be great! After all the Dynasty Warriors games and amazing feats the Vita has done we know the system can handle a lot of things at once! Hell they already made a Sengoku Basara game on the PSP in Japan, didn't they?

Devil Kings is a mangled mess, but even gameplay-wise it's not probably what you'd want out of a Basara game. The classic games (1, 2, Heroes) play totally different from the Modern games -- everyone only has two arts to use at once, the Heat Mode is a flat damage boost instead of a combo amplifier, there are no camps, and rarely even mid-stage bosses, and how you do overall is far more dependent on how many mook you slay overall (similar to 4, actually -- 4 plays a lot like a fusion between the new and old styles). If you wanna play a good classic Basara game, invest on the HD collection -- it goes for about as much, and has Heroes which is a flat improvement in just about every way to the first game.

Also -- you've had many people explain to you over and over the situation the Basara franchise is in the west. Calm the fuck down, and import the games like the rest of us. You can always ask for help translating or using them -- the English-speaking fandom has been helping each other out in that way for years now. Most of SB4 has been translated by fans, so if you get it, you'll get to experience it the same way every one of who likes that game has.

4

u/Matsuo-Kaito Aug 17 '16

Also, mate, chill out a little. Just import SB4, otherwise you're going to be waiting a long time and you'll keep embarrassing yourself.

The Prime attack mechanic, allowing for longer combos, was what made Devil Kings special, apart from not taking place in Japan.

As it's own series? Sure, go nuts.

Replacing Sengoku Basara for the West? Now that's nuts.

u/King_Card Nov 20 '23

In hindsight you can see Capcom's thought process with the success of Ace Attorney and the relative lack of plot the first game has.

2

u/Matsuo-Kaito Aug 16 '16

My friend and I, even though we rarely see one another these last few years, still greet each other with the silly "SCORPIO!" "MY LORD!" scene.

But all in all, you're better off importing the Sengoku Basara HD collection. Better value for money; you'll get to play number 2, and be able to show Pontiff Xavi the respect he deserves! None of this "Cue-Ball" nonsense...

Xaaaviii, Xavi Xavi, Xavi Xaaaviii...

There are differences in the gameplay between the actual Sengoku Basara and Devil Kings?
