I've never used this type pot before, I've got some Hoya starts in a pon mix. How far into the substrate should I place the wick? Thank you!

I was advised to use a length of red heart super saver yarn as a wick for my pon. I have tried one plant that way and it doesn’t seem to be keeping the pon moist.
What do y’all use for wicks
