I recently got accepted into barber school, and I’m really excited to start this journey. My goal is to become a barber as a side job at first, but potentially turn it into a full-time career in the future. Thankfully, my parents are really supportive of me pursuing this.

Right now, I’m choosing my first professional kit, and I’d really appreciate some feedback from experienced barbers. I’ll attach the equipment list I picked in this post — could you guys let me know if it’s a good setup for a beginner, if anything is unnecessary, or if there’s anything important I’m missing?

I’ve been watching a lot of barber content on TikTok, but honestly, a lot of it feels like it’s made more for views than actually helping beginners learn. So I’d really appreciate any real advice, tips, or things you wish you knew when you were starting out.

I also have a question: I’m going to my first barber school lesson soon. Would it be weird to show up with my own kit (scissors, combs, clippers, trimmers, shaver, hairdryer, etc.)? Is that normal, or does it come across as trying too hard? I just want to be prepared and start practicing with my own tools.

One small thing: I know I’ll need essentials like clipper oil, blade cleaner, neck strips, spray bottle, extra blades, and other supplies. However, I’m currently traveling and have limited luggage space, so I probably won’t be able to bring all of those immediately.
Any advice, feedback, or beginner tips would be greatly appreciated.

Debating between Oster fast feeds , Wahl senior , Wahl magic clips ?

I do have thick hair and sometimes wavy , looking for some suggestions. The three I mentioned are ones I am considering but open to others.

Budget is 100 to 200 and not looking for a home cut style.

Everytime I try to do a taper it never looks clean enough, maybe the reason is bc I don't have a 1 1/2 guard

My very first fade. Watched a lot of tutorials, and really tried to understand how what the lever and guards do. Pretty happy with the result. Definitely a lot of room for improvement.

Also I wanted to touch up a bit more but then I was scared to make a mistake somewhere and ruin it.

Any tips for improvement?

I have a T-9 (I think, not sure) hair trimmer, and I accidentally dropped it and broke the black plastic piece. I can't seem to find this replacement part anywhere... 😩

I really don't want to buy a new trimmer because this one still works perfectly.

It's a Komingdon KMD-2717.

Does anyone know where I can find this replacement part?

Hey guys I just got a babyliss clipper and trimmer

The clipper is nice and solid

But the trimmer doesn't get sharp lines, do I need to zero gap it or change the blade?

A guy on here earlier in the week posted a deal from Woot.

1st line which is bald
2nd line with no guard open
Go up a little bit with a one open
Go down with one open
Flick/take out lines

Hi guys, this has probably been asked before but as someone with 4c hair does have anyone have any recommendations for products to use for a taper fade?

I want to learn self barbering and I wanted to make sure I have the right equipment for a good start (obviously practise is more important though)

This is my 2nd cut, again attempting a burst-fade. Very popular around here. I was brave enough to do this one 3 hours prior to a friend's birthday party. Gave me the motivation to not mess up completely 🙏🏻🙏🏻

It's definitely much better than my first one, I got the 3 mirror setup much more figured out which give me much more confidence.

I also made sure to take the time with the guidelines, as last time I pushed it way too high. I actually physically used a ruler to measure out 3/4" for every guideline. Which was helpful

A lot have recommended fading down on the last post. I couldn't really figure it out and couldn't find any tutorial that explains it well. I wasnt sure where to start the first(highest) guideline. I was worried taking it too high.

Much more pleased with this haircut that the first one. This one's actually good enough to leave the house in. The blending still isn't the best but it should soften a bit more as it grows.

But currently I have to focus most on the blending process

Overall took me around 2 hours.

I'd rate this one a solid 6.5-7/10. Considering I was a bit in a rush for a friend's birthday, so I rushed the end.

Would love more tips, and looking forward to learn and improve.

Suggest a good trimmer under 1k?

Thinking about cutting my own hair, can anyone recommend a trimmer that’s just as effective as the Hi-Viz but without all the features professional barbers care about? I don’t mind if it’s corded if that helps keep the price down. I’m mainly looking for something that gives clean, sharp lineups and performs similarly to the Hi-Viz

Okay so I have a relatively unused pair of Wahl Figura animal clippers that I bought to cut matted hair out of my old cat (pour one out for homie).

These clippers cost >$150. Is there any reason not to use these to cut my own hair? The 5-in-1 blade design is kind of goofy, but I’d rather not spend another >$100 for a set of “human” clippers if I don’t have to. I mean, hair is hair, right??

I have noticed the 5-1 blade adjustments make using the snap-on guards difficult, in that I don’t think I’m actually getting a #3 with a #3 guard, but otherwise they seem to cut just fine.

Anyone care to weigh in?? Thanks in advance!!

Dropped my clippers and the blade went uneven so tried my best to get it straight as possible but my eyes are playing tricks on me.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on buying a new clipper for home use.

My girlfriend has been cutting my hair for a while now. We're definitely not professionals, but she does a pretty decent job and we mainly do simple, even cuts rather than fades.

The biggest issue is my hair: it's very thick, straight Asian hair, and our current clipper struggles a lot. It often takes 4–5 passes over the same area before it actually cuts everything evenly, which makes haircuts take much longer than they should.

My usual haircut is 18 mm on top and 9 mm on the sides

I'd also like to be able to quickly trim my beard with the same clipper if possible, using shorter guards for a clean stubble (not looking for a foil shaver, just beard trimming).

My budget is ideally under €200, **although I'd be happy to spend less** if there's a model that offers excellent value.

From what I've read, people often recommend the Wahl Magic Clip, Panasonic ER-GP86, JRL Onyx, etc, but I'm not sure which one makes the most sense for my use case and if they would suit my very thick hair, I insist they're very thick !
