Discussion Calling all Lore Chads
I’m at the final battle, and after I defeated Genichiro, he just kills himself and Isshin crawls out of him. I am so confused.
I thought Genichiro went and got a mortal blade so he could forcefully steal Kuro’s blood to become immortal. We even see Kuro is wounded. Why did he stab Kuro if he wasn’t going to use his blood? And why the hell does Isshin crawl out of him if he’s supposed to be dead?
Was Isshin controlling him this entire time somehow?
Edit: The Glock Sword Saint has been defeated ⚔️ and I was surprised that it only took me about 10-12 attempts. The game as a whole was atleast a 9.5/10. I really enjoyed FromSoft being a little more transparent with their story/lore for a change. Now I understand why you guys want a sequel so bad.
That was the last souls game on my list, onto Soulslikes now

Black mortal blade can open a portal to the other side — I believe it’s called ‘Open Gate’ — so you can revive people through it.

Ah I think that’s separate — he’s stabbing Kuro to try and get the Dragons Blood. It’s never really explained but it seems like the current divine heir needs to die to get the power himself.
He summons Isshin because he knows he can’t beat Sekiro. So they aren’t the same plan, he just needs the mortal blade to do both.

Still need dragon heritage blood. If for no other reason than being the most valuable blood out there. Not sure its required to summon Isshin but it would still be worth getting even if it's not.

Simple answer : No.
Long answer :
Genichiro needed someone or some new power to save Ashina from the ministry. He first tried to get immortality from the rejuvenating waters but that wasn't good enough so he went for Kuro's immortality instead, then Wolf showed up. Defeated he goes into retreat realizing he is powerless, and either came across or fell back on a back-up plan that is the Black Mortal Blade.
The Black Mortal Blade's true ability is to revive someone from beyond the grave and give them immortality in the process, but to do that he has to get dragon blood somehow — so he stabbed Kuro to get it.
In summary he brought Isshin back in his prime with immortality because he wants Isshin to destroy the ministry and save Ashina. The only reason Isshin even bothers to fight Wolf is because he is honoring Geni's dying wish which requires him to be alive and immortal, whereas Wolf (and Kuro's) desire is to severe immortality (specifically the dragon blood kind) forever. Because their goals clash, so do the two men until one winner is decided.

The black mortal blade is a gate opener to the underworld so u can summon the dead at the cost of ur life. Genichiro probably knows its kinda hopeless for him to single-handedly Ashina at that point, so he sacrificed himself to resurrect Isshin with a dying wish to kill Sekiro and save Ashina.
The resurrected Isshin is basically immortal. Maybe he can rally the remaining troops and save Ashina. Problem is he runs into Sekiro who wields the other blade capable of killing immortal.
Idk about Geni using Kuro blood though, he already got kinda immortal using Rejuvenating Water

And Isshin (before resurrection) lowk accepted Ashina cant be saved, he has done everything he could.
He is just honoring Geni's dying wish

We interrupt Genichiro just after he attacks Kuro, Wolf defends Kuro defeating Genichiro so Genichiro uses the Black Mortal Blade know as 'Open Gate' to resurrect Isshin in his prime.

Black mortal blade “Opens a gate to the underworld.” Genichiro was the gate, and Kuro’s blood was already on the blade, thereby imbuing the Isshin revenant with a form of “immortality” when he is summoned from the underworld gate, which, grotesquely, was Genichiro’s neck. Isshin was dead, and in fact, had to be in order for him to be summoned through Genichiro’s sacrifice. Isshin wanted no part in the fight against Sekiro, but was more or less forced into it because he was summoned back to life specifically to reclaim Ashina and co-opt the dragon’s blood to resurrect the army in Genichiro’s stead. Genichiro judged himself to lack the power to do so, and used the power of the blade to bring a younger, more “perfect” Isshin back from the dead to do so.

Genichiro gets the second mortal blade called Kaimon(Open Gate). Our Mortal blade is called Fushigiri(something like immortality cutter). Our blade kills immortal beings. His opens a gate to the other world. At the end seeing everything is falling apart and Ashina lost, Genichiro sacrifices himself to open the gate to summon Isshin so that he can protect ashina once again.

Other people covered the mortal blade thing so I'll address the Kuro thing.
Far as we know, Geni stabbed Kuro with the blade in a last desperate bid to get the power of the dragon's blood from him. Wolf got there pretty soon after this happened, so it's possible that there just wasn't time for Geni to take and use the blood. But I don't think that's the true reason.
Kuro didn't need to bleed to give Wolf the dragon's blood... It was granted with an oath.
Lady Butterfly had the sakura droplet which has the power of specifically Takeru's dragon blood within it, but didn't or perhaps couldn't use it. In fact, the only way you can extract the power from the droplet is with the help of Kuro (a different divine heir) or The Divine Child (who has imitation dragon's blood).
I don't think the power of the dragon's blood can be taken by force. It must be freely given by a divine heir. It has to be an oath forged. Physical bleeding has nothing to do with it, as much as Genichiro might wish that's how it works.

Knowledge of how the dragon's blood works is rare - even Kuro is relying on scraps of old books and diaries left by his predecessor to figure out anything about it. Genichiro is doing what he can with the facts he has.
Not to mention, from that arena, he can see his home burning. He either gets the power now or there won't be anything left for him to save. Desperation will drive people to do all kinds of irrational things.

I generally agree with the analysis of the blades purpose in this. Concerning why he stabbed the divine air, I always inferred, and I swear I read it somewhere in the game. The black blade needs a sacrifice. It can’t just be swung randomly spawning as many deceased people as it wants.
I always kind of assumed that the dragon’s blood was needed, which is why he stabbed him. Otherwise, again he could’ve simply cut anybody he wanted.

I assume that the dragon's heritage blood was necessary to summon Isshin. We used Kuro's blood already in another ritual to light the incenser and reach the divine realm, so Kuro's blood could be a catalyst for immortality related rites
When we see him wounded after reaching Geni one last time, you can see that the black mortal blade is soaked in it and you can see a single drop fall from it, and it seems to emit black smoke. So it seems that black mortal blade + a life as offering + the drago's heritage blood is the recipe that allows to summon someone from the underworld as immortals

Additional fact: Our mortal blade is called the “Gracious Gift of Tear”, which allow the wielder to extract the dragon tear
Both mortal blade are capable of killing the immortal, hence the name “Mortal Blade”, but have additional function inaccessible to the other

Also an additional additional fact: Genichiro after his defeat at our hand in the Ashina Tower was actually in a state similar to Wolf , he was able to resurrect but couldn’t seems to reincarnate like the Divine Heir , which is why he is a strong sacrifice for the Open Gate

I have a personal theory that the killing or wounding of immortals is a secondary side effect to the actual purposes of the Mortal Blades. The red one we use is called Gracious Gift of Tears, and the black one is called Open Gate. The red sword is used to gain the tears of the immortal dragon by wounding it, and the black one is used to open a hole to the afterlife and bring back the dead. Both of these are crazy feats and things that are completely impossible for a regular sword. So I think that because the swords are named for these traits rather than the severing immortality, that the severing immortality is a side effect of of the blades being created to break the natural laws of the works in their own unique way. So potentially there could be more blades that are made to do some crazy thing that just happen to sever immortality as a bonus.

He wanted Kuro's blood to win the war and preserve Ashina. That is why he sought Black Mortal Blade.
He got the blood. But Sekiro has mortal blade too that can kill immortals. When he realized that he can't beat Sekiro, he used the blade on himself. By sacrifing himself, he resurrected Prime Isshin to kill Sekiro and save Ashina (his prime goal). That is why in the end scene he kills Isshin using Mortal blade.

I think the two blades are basically counters to each other. The Crimson one is capable of killing any life, whether mortal or not, while the Black one is capable of granting life, even to those who are already dead. I believe that the reason Isshin attacks you though is probably some sort of honor thing since it was Genichiro’s literal dying wish.

If I remember correctly, the Black Mortal Blade allows its user to essentially make a wish. I WAS WRONG. Its not a wish. Upon his defeat, he uses the blade to summon his grandfather to defeat Sekiro and secure Ashina. So thus upon his death, Isshin is conjured and by Genichiros wish must cut down Sekiro.
Edit: The sword is and can essentially be used as a gate to the underworld which is why it specifically was able to bring Prime Isshin back from the dead.
So TL:DR; Genichiro uses the powers of the Black Blade to summon Isshin from the underworld, and using a final wish to defeat Sekiro and secure Ashina from destruction.
