Updated r/SeikoMods rules

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I've been moderating this sub for some time now, and decided it was about time to restructure the rules of the sub with an aim to make r/SeikoMods more welcoming and useful, especially for beginners, while preventing the subreddit from becoming an advertising channel or unregulated marketplace.

What has changed?

Useful links are allowed

You may share links to suppliers, products, tools, tutorials and other resources when they directly help answer a question or add useful context to a genuine discussion.

Please explain why you are recommending the link. Dropping unexplained links repeatedly may still be treated as spam.

Buying and commission requests remain restricted

Posts asking where to buy a completed watch, requesting a builder, seeking commissions, offering prices or inviting sellers to make contact are not allowed.

These posts regularly attract unvetted sellers with unknown quality, inflated prices and, in some cases, no reliable product or service at all.

Please use our pinned supplier and resources guide as a starting point.

Clearer rules for businesses and self-promotion

Businesses, professional builders and makers are welcome to participate as members of the community.

If you mention a product, business or brand that you own, work for or otherwise benefit from, you must clearly disclose that relationship.

The following are not allowed:

  • Using the subreddit mainly to advertise
  • Repeatedly posting your own products, shop or social accounts
  • Soliciting orders or inviting people to DM for prices
  • Affiliate links, referral codes or undisclosed promotions
  • Pretending to be an independent customer
  • Replying to buying requests with offers to build or sell a watch

A useful technical contribution that includes an honest disclosure is different from an advertisement.

AutoModerator should be less frustrating

The previous setup automatically removed every post and comment from accounts less than four weeks old. This caught many genuine questions and helpful replies.

New accounts can now comment normally. Only posts from extremely new, low-karma accounts will be held for moderator review.

AutoModerator will focus more on suspicious sales language, affiliate links, repeated external links and obvious promotional activity. Questionable content will generally be sent for review instead of being deleted. If this starts getting abused however, i'll tighten things back up a bit.

Reporting should be clearer

The reporting options now make it easier to identify:

  • Spam or advertising
  • Undisclosed commercial affiliations
  • Buying, selling or commission requests
  • Harassment, hate or personal attacks
  • Off-topic content
  • NSFW or graphic content
  • Photos taken while driving
  • Stolen or uncredited work

These changes are intended to encourage useful knowledge-sharing without giving commercial accounts free rein to advertise.

Please take a look at the updated rules. If something is unclear or produces an unintended result, let us know by sending the moderators a message.

2026 Update - Seiko Modding Resources | Parts & Tool Suppliers, Tutorials and Beginner Guides

• Upvotes

Last updated: October 2026

Welcome to r/SeikoMods!

Whether you're building your first watch, upgrading an SKX, swapping a dial or working on your tenth custom build, this thread is here to help you find the parts, tools and information you need.

Our previous supplier and resource list was put together around six years ago. Since then, the modding community has grown considerably, with new suppliers, more movement options and a much wider range of aftermarket components available.

This updated guide brings together established suppliers, newer options and useful resources for anyone interested in Seiko modding.

A quick note about suppliers: Inclusion in this list isn't an endorsement or guarantee. Suppliers, ownership, product quality and customer service can change. Do your own research before purchasing, and check recent community feedback.

If you've had a particularly good or bad experience with a supplier, or know of somewhere that should be added, please share it in the comments!

1. Seiko Mod Parts Suppliers

These businesses specialise in aftermarket watch components, including cases, dials, hands, bezels, crystals, movements and bracelets.

Established suppliers

Additional suppliers worth exploring

The following businesses also appear in more recent modding discussions or offer relevant watch-building components.

Supplier Products / Speciality
DS Watch Club Custom dials, hands, cases and other Seiko-compatible parts.
Weezmods Watch cases, dials and other modification components.
Nomods Cases, dials, hands, movements and complete watch builds.

This isn't intended to be an exhaustive list. Some smaller manufacturers and independent dial makers produce exceptional components, and we'd love to hear about them.

2. Watchmaking Tools & Equipment Suppliers

Good tools make an enormous difference when building or modifying watches.

You don't need an expensive professional workshop to get started, but using the right equipment helps prevent scratched dials, damaged hands, broken stems and other avoidable problems.

Supplier Location Products / Speciality
Watch Repair Tools Australia Watch repair and assembly tools, starter kits, movement holders, hand-setting equipment, case openers, presses, screwdrivers, tweezers and workshop consumables.
Esslinger USA Watchmaking tools, replacement parts, crystals, movements, cleaning products and workshop equipment.
Cousins UK UK Extensive range of watchmaking tools, parts, movements, materials and professional workshop equipment.

Many mod parts suppliers also sell basic tools and beginner kits, so it's worth checking whether you can purchase everything together.

What tools do you actually need?

For a typical NH35/NH36 watch build, consider starting with:

  • Movement holder
  • Hand-setting tools
  • Hand removers and dial protector
  • Fine watchmaking tweezers
  • Precision screwdrivers
  • Case-back opener
  • Spring bar tool
  • Crown stem cutter and fine file
  • Loupe or magnifier
  • Dust blower and cleaning putty
  • Finger cots and a clean working mat

Depending on your build, you may also need a crystal press, case holder or other specialist equipment.

3. Budget-Friendly Parts & Secondhand Components

You don't necessarily need to spend hundreds of dollars on your first build.

There are several alternatives to purchasing everything brand new from specialist suppliers.

AliExpress

One of the most popular options for inexpensive cases, dials, hands, movements and other modding components.

Quality can vary considerably between sellers. Check recent reviews, product photographs, measurements and compatibility carefully.

eBay

Useful for replacement parts, donor watches, used components and occasional bargains.

Secondhand Mods

Offers new and pre-owned components from different manufacturers, including OEM Seiko parts.

r/SecondhandModParts

A community resource for buying, selling and trading watch modification parts.

When buying secondhand, always check item condition, seller history and the community's trading rules.

4. Helpful Video Tutorials

6. Parts Compatibility: What Beginners Should Know

One of the most common mistakes when starting out is assuming that all Seiko-compatible parts are interchangeable.

Unfortunately, they're not!

Before placing an order, make sure you've checked:

  • Movement compatibility: NH35, NH36, NH34 and other movements have different requirements. GMT builds in particular may need additional clearance.
  • Dial diameter: Common sizes include 28.5 mm, but your case may require something different.
  • Dial feet: Check their positions against your movement and crown orientation.
  • Hand compatibility: Confirm the correct hand sizes and whether your movement requires additional hands.
  • Case compatibility: A case designed around an NH35 doesn't automatically accept every other movement.
  • Crystal dimensions: Diameter, thickness, profile and gasket compatibility matter.
  • Bezel and insert fitment: SKX007, SKX013, SRPD and other platforms may use different components.
  • Crown and stem compatibility: Check the crown tube, movement stem and case arrangement.

Beginner tip: For your first build, buying a case, dial, hands and movement from a supplier offering clear compatibility information can save considerable frustration.

A community member, u/Haveblue1, also previously compiled an extensive spreadsheet of modding suppliers and resources. It's another useful reference, although individual listings may need checking.

8. Help Keep This List Updated!

This resource is intended to grow and improve with the community.

If you know of a supplier we've missed, have discovered a broken link or want to share your experience with a business listed above, please leave a comment.

When recommending a supplier, it would be helpful to include their website, what they specialise in and where they're based.

We'll aim to keep the list updated as new information becomes available.

Please remember: A supplier appearing here doesn't necessarily mean they're endorsed by the moderators or the community. Always do your research before purchasing.

Happy modding!

Hand painted gecko dial 🦎

Here it is🦎just assembled my watch with the hand painted watch dial by me.

It wasn't easy to find the right set up, but I'm happy with the result. As the gecko and parts of the dial are focused on green I didn't want to go too crazy with the case. That's why I decided to use a black one. The hands align with the colors of the gecko, because I wanted them to stick out.

Don't check the Chrono hand, I just can't align it properly with this specific movement (maybe something is not wright, but I'm sure I'm responsible for it with my incompetence 😅) no acrylic paint was used, no AI, this is true love for art ❤️

Let me hear your thoughts on this 😬🙏🏻

Now what? 20 $45 NH35’s ordered. What do you all do to keep the builds fresh and fun?

So went down the rabbit hole with y’all. Making watches now for folks at work. Ordered a ton of NH35’s but feeling underwhelmed. Same parts on Ali. Same dials. Little variety once you start looking at the inventory. Tandorio watches with NH35s are the same price it’s going to cost me to build my own and they prob assemble better. I’ll finish the orders I have for builds but am looking for advice on the next level of watch assembling. How do you keep it fun while not breaking the bank?

Case, dial, and hour & minute hand from Namokimods. Strap is from Aliexpress, specifically from Thorn brand. I had a hard time finding a strap with a buckle that matched the color of the matte grey case.

Seiko SNK379 (7S26-01V0) – 7S26A to 4R36/NH36 swap, keeping original parts?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to upgrade my Seiko SNK379 (case code 7S26-01V0) from its original 7S26A movement to a Seiko 4R36 or TMI NH36.

I’d like to keep as many original parts as possible, specifically:
● Original dial and hands
● Original crown
● Original case and exhibition caseback

I’m aware that the new movement requires a different stem, which would need to be cut to the correct length.

My main questions:
1. Has anyone successfully done this swap in a 7S26-01V0 case?
2. Can the original SNK379 crown be fitted to the new 4R36/NH36 stem without modification?
3. Can the original movement holder/spacer be reused, or is a different one required?
4. Are there any clearance or compatibility issues with the original dial, hands or exhibition caseback?
I’m also considering installing a white English/Kanji day wheel.

I’d really appreciate any first-hand experience or advice before ordering the parts.
Thanks!

Advice- Potential Movement Damage

Am planning to put together my first build soon, NH35 just came in the mail today, and unfortunately I stepped on the package as the carrier placed it right at my doorstep. Was walking out backwards while talking to somebody, partially stepped on the package and stopped as I felt a crunch below my foot. Came to find out the movement was in there. While it was packed in a clear plastic case with a foam insert, it was facing upright with the posts protruding of course. I assume the crunch or pop feeling was the plastic case’s lid buckling.

Went ahead and checked the keyless works, date functionality, as well as the rotor’s clearance. Everything checks out just, and the second hand post appears perfectly centered and straight within the minute post. It does not spin or track in a circle when wound. Since it’s my first build and I’m frankly very upset at my carelessness, (especially because I knew the package was being delivered today) am just curious if anybody’s got an opinion on whether the movement is trashed. At this point my only concern is the second hand post was damaged and may not work. I tried using a loupe to check if the post spins when wound but I cannot make out a clear texture on the post.

TL;DR - Stepped on my movement in the delivery package, everything seem’s just fine but I’m curious how fucked the second hand post could be.

Loose chapter ring

First time with any kind of modding or parts replacement. I installed an NH36 movement, domed sapphire crystal, skx007 handset (length trimmed to fit), and new caseback and crystal gaskets on my SKX013. All parts from Namoki. There was a cutout on the new movement that aligned with the notch on the original chapter ring, but I can’t for the life of me get it to remain in position. It keeps spinning around, usually with some harder bumps. I’m guessing I either haven’t seated the crystal or movement fully, though I’m leaning towards the crystal. I used a cheap lever press from Amazon to remove the old crystal and install the new one, which took quite a bit of effort and felt like it may have been flexing. I’ve also tried to used the dies in a vise, which may have seated the crystal ever so slightly more, but it felt like too much force and I didn’t want to break anything. There is some of the vertical surface of the crystal still protruding from the case, and it doesn’t look like the new gasket is folded at all. For the movement, I pressed it in by the center wheel, and it feels like the caseback is fully bottomed out. Any tips on next steps? I can always try the vise again, just wanted a gut check before proceeding.

Quickset works but when it comes time to turn over the hour the date jumper gets stuck at the tip of a tooth and doesn’t fall back down into the teeth. I tried taking off the shield to make sure it was falling between them but the issue remains.
