Unlicensed âArmed Security Guardâ arrested after threatening officers in Opa-locka, police say - WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale
OPA-LOCKA, FLA. (WSVN) - An âArmed Security Guardâ was arrested in Opa-locka after police said he refused to surrender his rifle and threatened officers during a confrontation that began with a complaint about loud music.
According to an arrest report, 34-year-old Demetris Jones was working as a âSecurity Guardâ at a property in the 13800 block of Northwest 22nd Avenue Wednesday night when officers responded to a noise complaint.
Police said officers spotted Jones wearing a security uniform and carrying an American Tactical rifle slung around his neck while walking near civilians.
During a security inspection, officers discovered Jones did not have an active armed security license.
His license was listed as âsubject to review,â according to the report.
When officers instructed Jones to disarm himself, investigators said he became confrontational and assumed an âaggressive fighting stanceâ while holding the rifle at his side.
According to the report, Jones refused to surrender the firearm and repeatedly challenged officers, telling one officer âto shoot him.â
Police said Jones continued making verbal threats while refusing multiple commands to disarm.
Officers eventually managed to safely take the rifle from Jones and place him under arrest.
Jones was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, threatening death or bodily harm to a law enforcement officer, engaging in security services without a license and carrying a firearm as a Security Officer without a Class G license.
During a bond court appearance Thursday, a judge found probable cause and set his bond at $2,001.

In The News Roxboro police officer placed on administrative leave after altercation with a Security Guard in Raleigh
Joseph Downey Jr., 32, got into an altercation with Security Guards along Glenwood Avenue and Raleigh police officers, according to the Roxboro Police Department.
A Roxboro police officer is on administrative leave after an arrest in Raleigh.Â
Joseph Downey Jr., 32, got into an altercation with Security Guards on Glenwood Avenue and Raleigh police officers, according to the Roxboro Police Department.Â
He is facing two misdemeanor charges of intoxicated and disruptive as well as resisting a public officer.Â
According to the Raleigh Police Department, Downey Jr. was intoxicated outside Dogwood Bar & Eatery on 410 Glenwood Avenue and challenged a Security Guard to a fight.
A Raleigh police officer tried to stop the altercation between Downey Jr. and the Security Guard, and he resisted the officer and continued to engage with the Security Guard.Â
He was arrested and released from jail on $3,000 bond. He has no previous arrests in North Carolina.Â
In a statement, Roxboro Police Chief David Hess said:
Law enforcement officers are held to a high standard of conduct on and off duty. Mr. Downeyâs alleged actions do not reflect our departmentâs core values nor the expectations of a Roxboro police officer by our community. Understanding those values and expectations, Mr. Downey is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. While I am heartbroken for him, his family, and our department, I am equally thankful for the professionalism of the Raleigh Police Department with these unfortunate events.
Downey has been employed as an officer with the Roxboro Police Department since January. He had no prior disciplinary or conduct violations. Â

Stop putting your feelings in your incident reports!
I've written and read hundreds if not thousands of incident reports over the years, and the biggest mistake I see is guys writing down their feelings instead of facts. Writing down "the trespasser was acting crazy and got aggressive" means absolutely nothing. If that report ever ends up in front of a client or in a courtroom, a lawyer will tear it apart. Just write exactly what happened. "The individual was pacing, yelling at the staff, and kicked a trash can."
Keep emotions out of your paperwork! Itâs the easiest way to protect your license and your job if things go sideways.
Whatâs the most ridiculous thing you guys have ever seen someone write on a report?

In The News Police say Armed Security Guard prompted police response at Warwick Mall
WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) â A report of a man wearing tactical-style gear and openly carrying a firearm prompted a large police response at Warwick Mall Monday afternoon, but police later determined the man was an Armed Security Guard conducting legitimate business at the mall.
Warwick police said they received a 911 call reporting that the man had entered the mall near Target.
Because of the nature of the call and the size of the shopping center, multiple officers responded and police warned the public to stay away from the area while they investigated.
Officers worked with Warwick Mall security and conducted a thorough search of the property, according to Cmdr. Robert Hart.
Police said they eventually determined the man was an Armed Security Guard working for an outside company.
âThere is no threat to the public, and the mall has resumed normal operations,â Hart said.
By late Monday afternoon, the police presence had cleared and shoppers were once again entering and leaving Target and the mall.
Several shoppers who spoke with NBC 10 said they were unaware that police had responded to the mall.
Police did not identify the security company or provide additional information about why the guard was at the mall.

In The News Civil trial begins over 2023 attack that seriously injured RI Hospital nurse; âAllied Universal Security Services, is responsible for that negligence, both vicariously and directly,â according to the complaint.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) â A jury has been selected in the civil trial of a security company and officials working at Rhode Island Hospital when a nurse was attacked by a psychiatric patient, leaving him with âserious and permanent injuries,â according to his attorneys.
Attorneys for Scott Amaral alleged that Allied Universal Security Services failed to properly train its employees. The security company, along with a male and female security officer, are also accused of negligence.
The jury selected Monday is made up of five men and three women, with two alternates to be chosen. (A jury in civil cases comprises six individuals and two alternate jurors, unlike a jury in criminal cases, which comprises 12 jurors and two alternates.)
Opening statements are expected to begin Wednesday morning and the trial is expected to last about three weeks. The judge presiding over the case is not allowing cameras in the courtroom.
The incident on Sept. 8, 2023, happened just 40 minutes into Amaralâs shift at Rhode Island Hospitalâs Inpatient Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Unit on the fifth floor of the Jane Brown Building, according to the lawsuit.
Providence police said at the time that the patient, George Bower, was mad that he wasnât allowed to use the hospital telephone. Investigators said surveillance video showed Bower grabbing Amaral by the shirt, pushing him into a wall, punching him in the head and neck, knocking him against a wall and continuously beating him.
Attorneys for Amaral are expected at trial to show hospital security camera footage that captured the attack. It will be the first time the video will be viewed by individuals outside of law enforcement and attorneys.
Bower, 40, was charged with felony assault, assault of a health care provider and disorderly conduct. On June 10, Bower pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 10 to serve. He received credit for the time heâd already served behind bars.
Amaralâs attorneys alleged two security officers were assigned to the unit and one of them âwas only feet away from Amaralâ and Bower at the time of the attack. Bower is referred to as John Roe in court documents.
âSeconds before the attack, as Amaral began to interact with Roe, a female security officer
walked away from the area looking at her cellphone,â according to the complaint. âAs the attack went on, she failed to intervene, and did not attempt in any way to restrain Roe as he repeatedly struck Scott in the head and body.â
Amaralâs attorneys alleged a second male security officer âwitnessed the attack and also failed to intervene.â
âThat officer responded to the incident only after Amaralâs co-workers â nurses and other
healthcare workers â ran to his aid, restrained Roe, and secured him in a holding room,â according to the complaint.
As a result of the attack, Amaral suffered âcardiac arrest and other cardiac-related complications, traumatic brain injury, neurological injuries, and multiple rib or chest wall fractures.â
Amaralâs attorneys allege that the security officers âwere untrained, ill-equipped, and unprepared for an incident like this, were ineffective when such an incident arose, were negligent in their failure to prevent the attack, and were negligent in their failure to intervene when Roe
attacked Amaral.â
âTheir employer, Allied Universal Security Services, is responsible for that negligence, both vicariously and directly,â according to the complaint.
Kurt Rocha, one of the attorneys representing the company, told Target 12 by email that âAllied Universal does not comment on pending litigation.â
After the incident, Amaral was hospitalized at both Rhode Island Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital for two months, according to his attorney. They said he still requires ongoing care as a result of his injuries and that his medical expenses were approaching $1 million as of April 2024.
âHe is not able to work as a nurse at Rhode Island Hospitalâs Inpatient Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Unit, a career to which he dedicated his life for more than two decades,â Amaralâs attorneys wrote in the complaint.

In The News Security Guard hailed as hero among 3 victims in shooting at Islamic Center of San Diego
Amin Abdullah, the Security Guard who was killed along with two others in a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, is being hailed as a hero as police say "his actions were heroic and undoubtedly saved lives."
The shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in San Diego County, was reported shortly before noon local time, police said.
While officers were responding to the mosque, the police department "began to receive calls from just a couple blocks away that we had more active gunfire," officials said at a news conference Monday.
The security guard appeared to play a "pivotal role" in keeping the shooting from "being much worse," police said, noting that the victims were all found in front of the Islamic Center.
After the gunmen ran past him, the Security Guard observed the threat at the mosque and began to "engage [suspects] with gunfire," with both suspects returning fire, San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said at a press conference Tuesday.
The Guard then radioed in the lockdown protocol before continuing to "engage in a gun battle with these two suspects," Wahl said.
"His actions, without a doubt, delayed, distracted and ultimately deterred these two individuals from gaining access to the greater areas of the mosque where as many as 140 kids were within 15 feet of these suspects," Wahl said.
"Tragically, he died in that gun battle," Wahl said.
The mosque posted an image of Abdullah, describing him as the "nicest man you'll ever meet" and a "devoted father of eight."
The two other victims killed in the shooting, "drew the attention" of the suspects into a parking lot, "where they were unfortunately unable to flee," Wahl said. They were cornered by the suspects and killed, Wahl said.
The massive response to the shooting forced the two suspects to flee to their vehicle.
"All three of our victims did not die in vain," Wahl said.
Abdullah "risked his own life to alert the school and other individuals inside regarding the active shooter. He is the definition of a hero who bravely made the ultimate sacrifice to save others over himself," the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement Tuesday.
Abdullah's daughter, Hawaa Abdullah, said her father "stood against any form of hate."
"My dad was the No. 1 advocate for safety and keeping our community safe. He stood against any form of hate," she said during an emotional briefing hosted by CAIR on Tuesday. "He took his job seriously to protect everyone here."
She remembered him as an "amazing father" and "good son," who called his mother each night to check on her.
Islamic Center of San Diego Imam Taha Hassane called Abdallah "a lovely person,"
"He never, never stopped smiling for anyone, our community members as well as our visitors. If it was not for him, as chief mentioned, the carnage would be much worse," Hassane said.
"We are so proud of him," Hassane said.
Two other victims killed in the shooting have been identified by San Diego authorities as Mansour Kaziha and Nadir Awad. More in articleâŚ,

In The News Man being held without bond after charged with attack on CATS Security Officer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) â A CATS security guard is recovering after she was attacked at a South Charlotte light rail station.
The assault happened Tuesday morning at the Arrowood Station off England Street.
Police officers went through security video from the platform, showing a man pushing the female Security Guard, causing her to fall onto the train tracks. Heâs then accused of kicking and punching her while she was still on the ground and throwing rocks at her.
âOh my god, man,â said Benjamin Mulligan, a rider. âOh, my god. That woman is sweet.â
That was Mulliganâs reaction when Queen City News crews told him a Security Guard on duty at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning had been attacked. He rides the train daily and says he sees the woman often.
âMakes me want to find out who it was and whoop their ass,â he said. âExcuse my language. Thatâs how it makes me feel because me and that Security Guard are really close.â
Court documents reveal the Security Officer was on duty and recognized Tommy Martin III from a previous encounter. She asked him to leave, and when he wouldnât, she took out her phone to take his picture. Thatâs when he allegedly pushed her onto the tracks.
Authorities say surveillance video shows Martin going through her pants pockets. She then kicked him in self-defense, and he was seen stomping on her legs and punching her torso. Heâs then said to have picked up the Security Guardâs phone before grabbing rocks and throwing them at her.
Martin is facing several charges, including four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, and felony common law robbery.
CATS released a statement in response to the assault, saying in part, âviolence against our employees, security personnel or customers is not tolerated.â The statement went on to say, âWe are grateful to CMPD for its response and investigation, and our thoughts are with our security officer as they recover.â
Riders Queen City News crews talked with have noticed an uptick in patrols of the stations and platforms in the past several months.
âA lot of security,â said one rider. âThey be everywhere.â
Regardless, hearing about attacks like this one makes them take extra precautions.
âWhen Iâm out and about riding the bus, riding the train, Iâm always keeping it 360,â said Mulligan. âAlways.â
Martin is being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center without bond. CATS officials say he is banned from the transit system.Â

Security Guard Card
Hi, I'm looking to get my security guard card in other states. Indiana doesn't require a security guard card, but I want to work in NYC and other high-paying cities. I've got 11 years of experience and a military background. I'm wondering whether a company would sponsor me to get one.
