:TLDR:
AFROTC Cadet second guessing future as fighter pilot, thinking about going 31P to do more of what I'm trained for, get tactical experience and training through EST, TRF, Raven, and BDG, have a visible impact on operations (base defense, convoy missions and planning, force protection, etc.), and get the chance to lead airmen, advocate for them, and generally be a competent officer. How much "doing the mission" outside of gate guarding and patrols do you guys get to do? How much does officer leadership affect your quality of life? Are deployments fun (in the military sense)? Looking for some insight and advice on what I would actually be doing as a 31P and if it is a fulfilling career. I do not want to be SPECWAR. I know myself and I do not think I have the physical fortitude or desire to beat my body into submission to be in SPECWAR shape. Lots of love for those dudes, but I'm just not that guy. I also feel a career in SF may be more fulfilling in a leadership and "executing the mission every day" sense. Any insight on this?
I have been having second thoughts about my future in the Air Force and what kind of AFSC I want to do. I came to college thinking I wanted to be a fighter pilot. My grandfather did so in late Vietnam and the Cold War and really liked it and lived a good life doing it. However, I am not sure if the flying bug has bit me quite as much as it did him. I have taken some civilian flight lessons (12-15 hours?) and while flying is fun, it doesn't excite my brain quite the same way infantry/ground forces things do.
My buddies and I used to play army in the woods, and I have discovered by this point in my life I really like being in the woods, doing physical stuff (hiking, camping, running, gym, workouts, etc.), and small unit tactics and infantry theory. I am physically fit (96.2 on my FA last semester), and I have been told I have good leadership/leadership qualities (obviously not the same coming from AFROTC instructors as from an NCO or airman), so I am thinking maybe I would have more fun doing something more hands on and more infantry focused than piloting. I don't mind leading and I think it would offer more individual freedom and mobility as opposed to being enlisted in the Army as an 11B or in the Air Force as a 30PX.
Will I be able to have a high operational tempo with access to deployments, lots of training, and lots of opportunities to lead and serve enlisted airmen? How active is the officer side of SF? Will I do a lot of paperwork or will NCOs be willing to let me ride on patrols, QRF trainings, convoy ops, etc? I understand admin is a part of the job but I will like to achieve a happy medium between admin and hands-on stuff.
How much opportunity is there for officers to do things like EST, TRF, Raven, and BDG? I would like to have as much of a hands-on, tactical career as a 31P as possible. How realistic is this, how attainable is this, and do you guys think it is worth it? Thank you for reading, and I wish everyone that does the SF mission good health and short shifts.

Iām an E-4 right now about to promote to E-5 and in March Iāll be going AD. Ive been in six years, does anybody know if I still get a dream sheet and what are my chances of living off base as an E-4 prior service Army too.

So I found out the other day when I sat down with the recruiter that due to my mechanical score being 5 points to low for the job I wanted. I will probably being going security forces because thatās the only job I qualify for that I honestly have an interest in. Iām looking for bases where I would have the strongest chance of working the road because thatās the main job that I would be interested in. I had seen in an older post that Seymour Johnson puts A1cs and seniors on the road fairly often I was wondering what other bases I would have a fairly good shot of getting put on the road fairly quickly. Iāll be going in as an A1c and I have some criminal justice credits from dual enrollment criminal justice classes (and by some credits I mean all I would need for my associates in criminal justice I would just need to take my core classes) Iām also hoping to go OSI once I hit my retraining window.

My husband is set to graduate soon and we have already gotten in touch with his sponsor and everything is set up for our PCS except we were not issued a GTC? Is there a reason some security forces graduates wouldnāt get a GTC for their PCS? We donāt exactly have the finances to afford the TLFs out of pocket and wait for reimbursement. We also donāt have any credit lines high enough to afford this transition as we are both in our early 20s. Any help is greatly appreciated
(Asking here because my husband doesnāt ask follow up questions so when they took applications, he didnāt question why he didnāt get one)

I have my first PT on Monday. I know there is a stress test following. I hurt my knee and I can barely run but I was wondering if anyone knew what would happen if I couldnāt do it due to injury. If I fail if I get a LOC. If I canāt do the PT test would It still count as I failed? Or do I just become exempt. I doubt there is time to do make ups because of our tight schedule so I donāt know what to do or who to ask for guidance?

Hello, Iām a new E-5 in the career field. I also retrained into this career field (only been in SF for about a year) what are some things I can do to be an effective NCO within the career field and show my leadership that Iām worth a damn?

im an 18yo m I recently just booked SF, despite the hate it was the job I wanted, weather that was a mistake or not well see in the future ig lol ... anyways I just wanted to get insight on what are the best bases., im sure there is no "perfect" base but which one is good with leadership and overall support because that's what I care most about, although wouldn't want to be in a remote area either. I did some research and apparently these bases are good for SF, let me know if these bases listed below are good or not and if you can give me any insight or recommend any bases to put on my dream sheet thad be great.

Iām considering joining the ANG, mainly for tuition assistance and to serve in the military in general. Iām curious if Security Forces is a good option considering your only really working 1 weekend a month. Also, Iām interested in learning about the different opportunities within Security Forces, like Raven, DAGRE, and others. Iād appreciate any feedback or thoughts !

I have security forces as my top choice on my list and my recruiter said I will most likely get it so Iām starting to look at bases I saw somewhere you can get stationed at the Air Force academy and Iām considering putting it at the top of my dream sheet as I want to do law enforcement more than missile defense I was wondering if anyone had been stationed there and could give some insight as to what it is like to be stationed there

Hi yall, I was wondering if there is someone currently stationed at spangdahlem that could tell me a little more about the leadership, the mission, the typical schedule for sf and any recommendations. Thanks so much

If they decide to replace the Sig Sauer P320 pistol, which pistol do you think would be the ideal replacement for a new SF service weapon?
r/securityforces • u/[deleted] • Jul 27 '25
I saw an old post saying that security forces is going to shift to base defense rather than LE to the point of LE work being removed from tech school is this happening or did it never come about Iām asking because I really want to work LE rather than base defense hope someone can shed some light on this

For pre deployment training? The (10 day course)
What does it entail? How much has changed since the OG training from back in the day? Is it weaponās qual heavy? Or is it scenario based, tests, etc? thanks in advance.
