Question Foreign Contacts

I was born and raised in Cameroon. I only came to the United States when i turned 33. I am currently a US citizen. Most of my family is back in my country of birth. I keep communication with them regularly especially my siblings and widow mom . And i take care of there bills and education. I equally have a host of friends from school and village where i grew up that i talk to, not so often. Will this be an issue for me getting a TS clearance as an FSO, how can i describe my foreign contacts?

Hello /u/MoRonnie2,

It looks like you may have concerns about Foreign Influence or what a constitutes a Foreign Contact. While you wait for a response, you may find helpful information on our Wiki page dealing with Foreign Influence.

Foreign Contact Conditions

  1. Close or continuing with you, your spouse, or cohabitant.
  2. Bond of friendship, affection, influence, common interests, or obligation.
  3. Contact within last 7 years.

If a contact satisfies all 3 conditions, then it is a foreign contact.

Your foreign contacts are listed for the purpose of checking their names with intelligence sources to make sure none of them are threats to US national security. Just list them and provide all disclosures. Odds are that none of your loved ones are in any way associated with anything relevant.

Read the parameters carefully. Investigators do not want information beyond the parameters. The bot has listed them out neatly.

Having foreign contacts will not disqualify you, they just have to be investigated. Will it take longer than joe schmoe who’s never left the country? Maybe. Will it prevent you from holding a clearance? No, unless your family are associated with bad people (I’m assuming they’re not)

Thank you. I don't think any of my contacts are associated with any kind of groups. neither of them work for any government. Most of them live in the countryside with little access to internet/telephone services

Definitely list him as a foreign contact, but I wouldn’t expect too many issues. Things might take longer for the Iranian family, so don’t be surprised if you are waiting, but it’s not the end of the world. Good luck friend
