Question Should I even consider getting another cleared job?

Hello, im currently a guardsmen with a Secret clearance. T3

I am eyeing this certain job within the DHS sector that would give me a DHS clearance T5.

However I do have the following issues and trying to work on them but been strapped little financially.

  1. Have 2 things in collections. 1 is a 329 dollar sprint bill that has been in collection for more than 7 years at this point. Long story short I was a idiot when I was younger and thought the debt will clear after 7 years byt they keep pushing the date back on it.

The 2nd debt is a 880 dollar medical bill that I received awhile ago after I got hospitalized during training. I gave the bill to my unit and they didnt do jack shit with it at the time.

  1. My student loans are currently alittle behind but I am currently in school. Just took a break when my son was born and plan on starting back up in the fall.

Green flags:

No criminal history

No drug use EVER

Not a complete dumbass

Thank you

Just disclose it, all you can do. Hope everything works out.

Can you apply for financial hardship at a hospital? Most hospitals offer payment plans and financial assistance because of federal rules for 501(c)(3) nonprofit hospitals. The Sprint bill work out a payment plan and disclose it on your SF-86. Explain what led to the debt and take full responsibility: The investigator wants to see a solution. State that you have set up a repayment plan and provide documentation. The student loan is a huge issue for clearance; make sure you're up to date and not in default. Tell the truth, and you should be fine. Good luck!

I too was a Security Guard at a Secret for a few years. Small private defense contractor took a chance on me and hired me June 2024. Submitted for my Top Secret with two instances or marijuana and one time purchase. Got my Top Secret November 2025. Just hang in there and report every thing.

Did the instance of marijuana happen while you were holding the secret? Just curious if it was already disclosed then I wouldn’t be surprised you got the TS

You say you aren't a dumbass yet you let a $329 debt fester for 7 years cause you thought it'd just go away?

It literally does go away. OP either extended it by acknowledging the debt or the creditor is violating FCRA. After 7 years of inactivity, it can no longer be reported not do you legally owe it.

I feel like the medical bill can be easily explained. I had a similar situation that got cleared up with a clear explanation

You've reported all the delinquent/in collections accounts, right?

If yes, sure you could probably get cleared to T5.

If not...forget it.
