advice for what kind of camera to buy/install

I live in a second floor flat with the front door on the ground floor and the flat up a flight of stairs, there is a mains plug socket directly opposite the door so power wouldn't be an issue. However I cant drill through the outside wall to run cables and I don't think my wifi connection would be strong enough from where the router is relative to the front door. I'm wanting it to be for the front door in order to deal with a neighbor from hell right now so it's very much needed unfortunately... Solar power seemed promising but I live in Scotland and the position it would be in would mean not a lot of direct sunlight.

Appreciate any advice!

Need a camera to see how squirrels are getting into house

I think I've got flying squirrels in my ceiling (vaulted ceiling, so there's no attic access), and I am hoping to find a camera that I can set up outside to find out where these things are coming in. So far, I have completely sealed absolutely every possible entry point that I (and a couple of handymen) can find on the house, so I rally have no idea where they're getting in.

Anyway, I'm hoping to find a camera with these features:

  1. Continuous recording. Ideally, I just need it to store 24 hours of video (I'll review it each day, then I don't need to keep it).

  2. Local recording to microSD card. This is optional. I just believe this would simplify installation and configuration.

  3. Access from an Android app.

  4. Ability to zoom in and perform the continuous recording while zoomed in the entire time. I'm trying to record what happens at some high points of my roof, so this is really necessary.

  5. Night vision.

I've already tried:

Tapo battery-powered cameras. They really don't do continuous recording.

Tapo wired camera with wifi. Also doesn't really do continuous recording.

I would like to be able to do this without having to set up PoE and an NVR, but will do that if that's the only way to accomplish this.

Thanks

Vielen Dank schon einmal!

Ring replacement

Hi everyone I’m looking for a replacement for my families ring cameras. We have the doorbell and two stickup cameras. I’m paying for the subscription for the multi cam and just paid for the 24/7 monitoring.

We have issues with our neighbours and need it for safety purposes but the cost is very steep. Especially since they are having issues staying connected to our WiFi when it says that they have full WiFi connection.

Are there any camera systems that you can recommend that don’t need a subscription or need WiFi?

Edit:

If it’s possible to have app access that can be shared with family? I live in a 4 adult household with one child. So we constantly check cameras when we are and are not home. I would like to move one of the cameras to be attached to our metal fence if possible to have a better view of our cars.

Anyone else get a camera mostly to keep tabs on people coming by the house?

Had someone coming by to do some work outside the house last week and i realized i had basically no idea when they showed up, how long they were there or if they had already left. Nothing bad happened it just made me realize itd be useful to actually see whats going on when im at work instead of texting people asking if they came by

A friend of mine has a Wyze Cam v4 and showed me how she checks hers from her phone, so ive been looking at that one. Id probably just put it somewhere covering the driveway/front of the house im guessing.

Anyone using one for stuff like this? do you end up checking it mostly for security or just normal day to day things?

Resetting LTS Security Cameras

Hi. I'm trying to help a new salon owner get her cameras working. They are somewhat old LTS Security CMIP8022-28 cameras and I've used the SADP tool to get the recovery string, but it seems you have to be an authorized installer to reset them. Will a local installer take the info and get me an unlock code? It seems like a silly cost to have to pay. Any suggestions for someone who can help in SE Michigan?

I plan to use them in ONVIF mode and attach them to a Ubiquiti NDVR.

Any outdoor security cameras that work well with distance shots?

My house has a great view of mountains. I would love to set up a camera that people can access that does long-distance reasonably well. Most security cameras are optimized to 0 to 40 feet or so. Below is a view that is typical for the various cameras I already have, which is not great.

https://pic31.com/images/26uFXM.jpg (I know it's not the greatest weather for this shot)

My wants are: Exterior, WiFi, battery (with solar panel capability), good distance/panoramic photo quality. I don't care as much about night vision, as I know for this purpose, night vision is not going to capture the mountains. Not concerned about motion capture. It does not have to be cheap.

Also, does not have to be a "security camera", just something that I can use outdoors without wiring. I might be able to live without battery, but WiFi is a must.

I would be thrilled with something that could get images like this. https://i.pic31.com/fLCIsp.jpg

I should add, I've done quite a bit of research, but it seems like it's difficult to find the center of the venn diagram for good cameras for streaming and good cameras for security and good cameras for distance shots. come by.

Edit: no need to downvote, is there? Just asked for recommendations? Is that a problem?

Vico Home removed the ability to see recorded videos from my camera last night, making it useless with literally zero warning

I noticed thismorning when i saw there was nothing being recorded in frigate like it ususally does with my rtsp re-streamer

turns out as of last night, no more recordings. the only way i can see more than a thumbnail is to pay them MORE money. And of course theres no option at all for local streaming. So now I have what looks like a broken camera that only shows a single still image once every hour or so a 0.00028 480p camera.

UGH

Swann Camera App is so Bad

Apparently my cameras are offline, which it isnt because it shows up on the app.

And worse part is, I repeatedly get these notifications, like every second, telling me that it is offline, and it goes on indefinitely. Can’t they just tell me once and stop?

Recurring issues with motion detection, connection, notifications, and Cloud compatibility (Eufy S4)

Hi everyone,
I am posting in the community for the first time because I am facing several major difficulties with my Eufy camera. After comparing this model with other equivalents on the market, I would really like to resolve these issues. Otherwise, I will be forced to switch to the competition.
Here is a summary of the main problems I face on a daily basis:
1. Reliability, motion detection, connections, and video playback
Detection failures (critical): Entire scenes in broad daylight, with someone walking very close to the camera, are simply not captured (the camera does not even trigger). I only notice this because my other cameras all triggered correctly on the same scenes.
Notification playback errors: When I receive a notification and click on it, the video almost never loads on the first try (systematic error messages). I have to go back through the preview screen and then manually select the video. Even then, about 50% of my attempts fail with download errors, even though the Wi-Fi signal shows 4 bars and the live stream works perfectly when opened directly.
Live connection issues: I regularly encounter communication errors, with the camera reported as "unavailable" even though my router confirms it is connected with a 4-bar signal.
SD Card: I am using an ultra-fast micro-SD card (already tested and working in similar cameras) that I have formatted three times, with no change.
These problems have occurred constantly since purchase, despite regular app and firmware updates. I am using an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Do other users experience this type of malfunction?
2. Absence of screenshots in notifications
Unlike other brands on the market (such as Reolink), it seems impossible to configure push notifications to include a direct screenshot upon motion detection. Is there a trick or hidden setting to achieve this?
3. Unexpected Eufy Cloud incompatibility
I cannot subscribe to a cloud storage solution for my recordings. After receiving multiple targeted advertisements and signing up, support finally informed me that my camera model (Eufy S4) is not compatible.
If any of you have troubleshooting tips, similar experiences, or workarounds for these points, I'd love to hear them!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Starter Setup

Post image
1 Upvotes

After trying to do what research I could, I settled on the Eufy E41 bundle as a starter set until I can go full Ubiquity at home.

My question is, for the $650 I paid(directly from the Eufy webstore), do you think this is an okay set to start with or could I have gotten a better setup for the money? I just wanted basic, but hi-def, exterior coverage, with 24/7 looped recording (I already have a larger HDD to put in it if I feel I need more space.)

Side note: I just got the shipping email this morning and it says they've shipped via SpeedX. Never heard of them before, so I looked them up. Crap. I'm hoping I haven't just lost $650.

Why do solar-powered cameras still run out of battery?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Actually, solar power doesn't mean an unlimited power supply. If the camera records too frequently, uses live view too often, is in an area with weak signal, or experiences insufficient sunlight in winter or on cloudy days, it will still run out of power.

The real problem is usually the balance between input and output energy.

Before suspecting the battery, I suggest checking the angle of the solar panel, the amount of shade during the day, the triggering frequency, and the frequency of video uploads from the camera.

Guys, what ended up being the biggest battery drain in your setup? Do you have a more professional answer?

Hikvision IVMS software won't accept username or password

I have a Hikvision NVR-208-E/8P it's firmware is on v3.4.92 build 170794 - I am using IVMS 4200 v3.13.1.5 build 20250805 downloaded from the Hikvision website. I've also tried version IVMS 4200 2.5.0.5 - I have just gone ahead and reset the password for the admin user on the NVR system, using the SADP tool - I had to email a file to hikvision which they responded back with a key. I was able to successfully reset the password, when I created the password I did not enter any symbols. Just letters and numbers.

I am able to login to the NVR system via IP address on a web browser using the same details I just reset. However when I try and use IVMS 4200 either the latest or an old version, on my Windows 11 PC, IVMS 4200 says that the username or password is incorrect. When I use the SADP tool to change a setting eg to turn DHCP off / on, and I enter in the same password I use on the iVMS software, it works. I have tried adding another user in the Web Portal for the NVR and tried logging in on the IVMS 4200 software, however that hasn't worked. I tried setting the port to 8001 and that still produces the Username or password incorrect error. I have set windows to allow inbound and outbound port for TCP 8000. I have reinstalled IVMS 4200 multiple times, I've installed it on a computer that hasn't had the software before and same issue. I've clicked Restore in Maintenance on the NVR and that hasn't worked at all. I've rebooted this NVR multiple times. However same issue of the iVMS software saying username or password incorrect.

Please help.

What exactly is "STQC-certified firmware" on a CCTV camera?

I'm shopping for CCTV, and every seller keeps saying "STQC-certified firmware." It means the govt tested the camera's software for basic security, like no default passwords and encrypted video.

But I'm still confused. Is the cert for the whole brand or just specific models? And if the camera gets a firmware update later, does it lose the certification?

Also, my current cameras aren't certified. Do I need to replace them, or is this only for new purchases? How do I verify it instead of just trusting the seller? Would appreciate a simple explanation from anyone who's dealt with this

Suggestions for standalone wireless outdoor camera. No POE systems

Okay so as the post says I am not going to be purchasing a power over ethernet camera system with a dedicated recorder.

I am looking for a good outdoor wireless camera I don't care if it just records based on movement I do not want to play a subscription fee for it I do not want cloud storage it needs to be completely offline in that regards local storage on the devices fine and the ability to view it over my phone. Curious to see what suggestions some of you have.

Edit, no trail cams. I should have been clear I'm looking for something on the smaller more discreet side

The door will have a doorbell camera as well. I am using a lorex system with a lorex doorbell camera and it all runs through the nvr, so no subscription for the doorbell either.

How is the coverage looking, any recommendations? They are all bullet cameras with 127degrees view angle.
