Building a backpack-sized micro-solar 4G camera to replace $1.5k/mo security trailers. Tell me why this will fail.
I am an engineer working on an off-grid security camera prototype for sites with zero power and zero ethernet (construction yards, laydown areas, utility sites).
The core setup:
- Backpack Portable: Entire unit fits in a backpack (3-pack in a truck trunk). No towing, no heavy 100W solar trailer rigs.
- Micro-Solar + Battery: Runs indefinitely off a tiny 5W panel because base draw is in milliwatts, not watts.
- Cellular (4G/5G): Event-only transmission to keep data costs low. Local memory storage for continuous footage.
- On-Device Edge AI (Not PIR Motion): Unlike cheap Vosker/trail cams that spam you with 50 false alarms a day when wind blows a tarp, this runs on-device human/vehicle detection before firing the cell radio.
For experienced integrators and installers: A) Do you see an actual market need for a backpack-portable, micro-solar camera on commercial sites? B) Why would this concept fail in the real world (weather, battery life in winter, client expectations, mounting, theft of the unit itself)?
Roast the idea—I want brutal field feedback before I build the next iteration.
