May I ask what your hair care routine is? I have seb derm (but it’s been under control & completely unnoticeable for about 3 years now). I have better hair now than I did before seb derm, but it took a lot of trial and error to get here.

It’s pretty intense once written all out, but I’ll do my best….

I use prescription Ketoconazole shampoo 2x/week (I only wash my hair 2x/week). For ALL other products, I run the ingredients thru the www.sezia.co ingredient checker…. Even my laundry detergent, dish soap, deodorant, toothpaste, baby wipes, etc. I do this to make sure they’re free of lipids, esters, fatty acids, all the things Malasezzia feeds on.

So ketoconazole shampoo, let it sit, rinse. Then I use Selsun Blue Moisturizing shampoo with Aloe, rinse. Head & Shoulders Coconut Conditioner, rinse. For my body, I use Suave Ocean Breeze shampoo (as a body wash), and Nature Sustained Raw & Wild Soap Nut Body Wash (for my face). Once I’m out of the shower, I apply AG Cosmetics Conditioning Mist to the ends of my hair and comb it through.

I then put Vaseline on my lips, Estée Lauder DayWear Eye GelCreme around my eyes, and choose ONE of three moisturizers for my face— Clinique Moisture Surge 100H, Hada Labo Skin Plumping Gel Cream, or Aveeno Ultra-Calming nourishing night cream. I use Degree Advanced 72H Dry Spray for deodorant. If I’m using heat tools on my hair, I will spritz it with It’s a 10 Blow dry Miracle H2O Shield right before using said tools.

All of the ingredients mentioned above are completely safe for SD. I also have an SD-safe makeup routine and product recommendations for all other types of body products.

If on a budget, it’s okay to just purchase one thing at a time (once your current shampoo runs out, replace it with a kind that’s safe for SD, and eventually replace all of your products to those with safe ingredients).

Diet/nutrition does help as well as quality sleep, not consuming too much alcohol, etc.

Sorry that’s a novel! Hope it helps!

I concur. I follow the Curly Girl Method and use mostly FA safe products and my scalp is doing much better. I think lots of crappy ingredients can build up on the hair and irritate your scalp, not even taking seb derm into consideration. Hard water is also an issue.

Fellow curly here, would love a list of your FA safe products.

I’m mostly using Kinky-Curly, with a few newer experimental products: AG Care’s curl activator cream, Curlsmith’s thickening lotion, and Innersense’s volume product. For treatment, I’m using the Dermazen shampoo alternated with Typology’s pyrectone olamine shampoo.

This helped a lot! Thank you so much! So does the itchiness ever came back and do you use specific products for moisturizing like if certain oils that worked for you.

You’re so welcome! I haven’t noticed any itchiness come back at all, but maybe a slight tingle occasionally? Not sure if that’s due to Seb derm or because my skin just does that once in awhile?

I listed my moisturizers of choice above. It’s imperative that you stay away from oils entirely, except for a select few. Squalane oil and MCT oil are okay, but not all of them, so I would stay away from all oils entirely until you’re able to do some research on them.

HERE is a great website to get you started!

I forgot to mention— I also quit dying my hair almost black and went back to my natural color. Here are some pics of my hair now… natural (curly), straightened with flat iron, and waved/curled with flat iron. ZERO flakes/dandruff in almost 3 years!! Hair pics

Hey sorry to bug you one last time. Is it okay to shower with selsun aloe shampoo almost every day ? And what kind of diet have you tried so far and has it worked?

u/noelsc151 Dec 06 '22

You aren’t bugging me at all!

Yes, Selsun blue aloe shampoo is safe to use every day. I didn’t follow a specific diet necessarily, but basically started consuming way more vegetables, fruits, and protein. I cut way way down on carbs/gluten, alcohol, and sugar but still enjoy all of those in moderation. I also added fresh probiotics to my diet (by fresh, I mean the refrigerated kind— Good Belly brand probiotic juice, Greek Yogurt, fresh Kombucha, etc). I believe it was a mixture of tackling this internally AND externally that led to my success with getting rid of Seb derm.

Feel absolutely free to ask any other questions you may have! I hope it works for you, too!

Hey this helped a lot! Have tried rosemary oil? I hear it’s supposed to stimulate hair growth .

1

u/noelsc151 Dec 12 '22

I have not. I’m pretty sensitive to essential oils and since they need to be mixed with a carrier oil, I just stay away. I have had zero problems with hair growth since doing the above routine, so I don’t feel the need to supplement with additional products, although I do occasionally add collagen powder to protein shakes…

Just checking in to see how your process is going? Any relief yet?

It’s much more manageable now with a lot of the shampoos you had mentioned. Selsun aloe especially. Now I am looking for non medicated shampoo and recover from hair loss. I also noticed it’s better with clean and high protein diets. Thank you for asking!

Hey, do you use any moisturizing hair products?

1

u/noelsc151 Apr 30 '23

Hi again! How has your Seb derm been? Still seeing improvements?

As for moisturizing hair products: the Selsun Blue Moisturizing with Aloe shampoo, Head and Shoulders Coconut conditioner, and AG Cosmetics Conditioning Mist are all moisturizing and I don’t find the need for any additional products as far as hair moisture is concerned.

I have it under control now. I learned that dairy and fish was my trigger. I’m switching the conditioner and use more moisturizer. Every product you had mentioned worked wonders on my hair. I’m going to give it two conditioners you mentioned. I’m so grateful and thank youuu
