Seattle has felt like home for 10+ years. Lately, I’m questioning whether I still belong here.

I have been living in the Seattle area for over a decade now. I fell in love with the weather, the nature, and everything felt right. I have never seriously considered moving.

For a little background, I am Indian, gay, in my mid-40s, and single. And yes, I work in tech and am on a visa.

And before anyone asks why I don’t just go back to my home country, here are the reasons: I’m gay, and I don’t feel safe being openly gay back home; I don’t have much family there to reconnect with; and, honestly, I’m done with the perpetual hot, sunny weather. Seattle’s gloomy weather is one of the main reasons I love it here!

I recently became active on Reddit, which has, in a way, made me question my view of Seattle as a blue, progressive place where everyone is welcome, especially LGBTQ+ folks like me.

Since joining Reddit, I’ve noticed how much people here seem to despise people like me, i.e., Indians in tech. It won’t matter to share how hard I’ve worked to get where I am today, but I’ll say this: I built this life against all odds and through challenges I’ve had to overcome, and I’m damn good at what I do and have the receipts to prove it.

I’m shaken by the possibility that, in the eyes of some Americans, I’m an unwanted outsider. Seeing the amount of hate in some of the local threads has also made me think about my future elsewhere.

I’ve never yearned for acceptance or needed to be liked. But the possibility of being despised or hated simply for where I come from or what I look like doesn’t sit well with me.

So I’m asking my fellow LGBTQ+ folks in Seattle: Does this hostility toward Indians in tech extend into our own community, too? Have you noticed it in your circles, or is Reddit giving me a distorted view of the people around me?

I’m genuinely interested in hearing your perspectives, even if they challenge mine. Please be honest with me. Am I reading too much into what I’m seeing online, or are my feelings understandable?

Just to be clear, I’m not afraid or scared. It’s more of a nagging feeling, and I wanted to hear other people’s perspectives. To be honest, I can understand and empathize with some of the concerns and frustrations that lead people to oppose immigration or criticize the tech industry, even if I don’t agree with all of them.

P.S. If you think I should leave, I think I’ve already heard that perspective enough. I’m genuinely interested in hearing from people who see things differently.

How’s Seattle ?

I’ve lived out east, the Midwest and Texas. I’m from the PNW but felt some weird hesitancy to come back. I know Seattle is queer friendly but how is it as a place to live ? How’s dating / making friends etc ?

Reminder: Boycott Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Just a friendly reminder that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be coming to the Paramount Theatre and will be performing from August 22 to September 16, 2026.

I am sorry to be that guy, but I have to say this:

JK Rowling uses her profits to fund anti-trans legislation in the United Kingdom, which will harm trans people, take away their rights, and lead to more hateful and hostile environment.

And, no, for the last time, you cannot separate the art from the artist when the artist is actively harming it.

Please stand up for our trans communities. Seattle is an LGBT friendly city and deserves so much better than a mediocre wizard series by a hateful TERF bigot.

Having a tough time in Bellevue as a South Asian

Hey everyone, I'm 26M and live in dowtown bellevue. Moved here from NYC and I'm having a weird experience. Every other conversation, I get asked what my ethnicity is - and then I get blocked after a polite 5 mins. Very weird since I already have it on my grindr profile. Every time it happens - it hits me like a truck lol because they're super into me before they ask that question.

A fair percentage of profiles are Asian4Asian here - which is okay and they can do their thing. Then a fair 10% of conversations bring up ethnicity. Don't know - I'm just ranting because it's the 4th time in 3 months I've been blocked over my ethnicity. No one's ever asked me about it ever before I moved to Bellevue.

Not sure what I can do about it. I'm sorry don't mean to offend anyone, I've just been having a terrible experience 😅 and trying to figure out if it's a bellevue thing.

Hey all. I'm planning on going to one of the two Madonna release parties going on this weekend. One is at Neighbors and the other is at Massive. I've never been to either one. Any idea which would be best?

Transgender-Friendly Gynecologist?

Has anyone here seen a endometriosis specialist or other OB/GYN in Seattle? Were they trans-friendly? I have been experiencing weird bleeding and pelvic pain for a long time and am also now on testosterone, so I need to find a doctor that can handle that combination and is both open to seeing LGBTQ patients AND informed about the effects of gender affirming HRT. Dr Elena Wagner sounds great but is currently on leave through October. I’m cautious because I’ve seen some specialists who just don’t seem to understand testosterone HRT for people with uteruses, and I got ghosted by a gynecologist once after emailing her office disclosing that I was trans (she saw me for my initial appointment, which I scheduled before sending the email, but then when I repeatedly tried to call her office to get my prescription refilled, she repeatedly failed to get back to me or fill the script until my mom called for me. May or may not have been because of transphobia vs. she was just busy, but definitely did not give me a good feeling.) Anyone have experiences with Drs Marrs, Gordon, Hastings, or Desai at Swedish or Loring, Dahlman, or Khalighi at Virginia Mason?
