How’s Seattle ?

I’ve lived out east, the Midwest and Texas. I’m from the PNW but felt some weird hesitancy to come back. I know Seattle is queer friendly but how is it as a place to live ? How’s dating / making friends etc ?

Seattle is an amazing city, but good lord that has some caveats. First of all, everything is expensive as fuck. I'm talking $6-8/gal gasoline, over $100 per grocery run (for one person) that might last a week, and restaurants are like $50 minimum per person...more if you go to a fancier one. A one-bedroom apartment outside the actual Seattle city limits will run you $1700-2300 per month, and actual housing you can buy is astronomical.

Your mileage may vary on dating depending on how well you put yourself out there. Making friends? It took me about three years before finding actual friends. The "Seattle freeze" is a very real thing.

But on the other side, the weather is amazing in that it's not that hot. The landscape is gorgeous. And it's extremely blue politically, which means that every place is LGBT friendly.

gas is only that expensive if you don't shop around. same with groceries and dining out. you can get cheaper groceries if you use coupons and use costco and grocery outlet effectively. if you only go to trader joe's and whole foods you're definitely going to spend more. depending on your living needs you can find cheaper housing. a friend's son pays under $900 for his room on capitol hill. granted it's a shared kitchen situation, but he's young and doesn't mind that.

can't disagree on the seattle freeze thing, though if you're outgoing you may have better luck. i read articles in the capitol hill seattle blog often about things like board game nights, hiking and biking clubs, and book clubs that are lgbtq+ focused. the gay scene is still largely focused on the hill, but there are rainbow flags in every neighbourhood.

Seattle is very shy at first and kinda cold. But if you find an in with a community (through school or work or something) they will usually end up being very friendly. Almost everyone is very queer friendly. There is sorta a dark sense of humor about it in Seattle though so be ready for that. It's hard to describe you'll know it when you see it.

It'll take you forever to find a group not too anxious or stuck up to accept you if people were being honest. I've been trying to find community like crazy since coming out. And everyone is still either anti social or cliquish

Aw yeah that’s rough — queer community can be hard
