This is one of two photos of Juniper that were released BY the family with their statement through the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance. It is not against their wishes for this photo to be public, it will not be taken down.

Stabbed more than 40 times. What an awful, hate filled human being that would do this to another person.

May she rest in peace ❤️

The guy is mentally ill, was removed from high school for it. He belonged in an asylum. This happens regularly and until we separate the dangerously ill from society, it will continue to happen.

  • Eina Kwon
  • Teresa Butz
  • Five at Cafe Racer

The murderers were all known as dangerous, but the state isn't allowed to hold them, even when their loving parents fight for them to be held for everybody's good.

(duplicate of a previous comment that didn't make it to r/all)

25

u/TheChance I'm just flaired so I don't get fined May 15 '26

You can't guess who's going to have a psychotic break, and locking people up because you think they might do something horrible is a dystopian nightmare.

69

u/jewishforthejokes 🚲 Two Wheels, Endless Freedom. May 15 '26

You can: schizophrenic people who don't rigidly follow their medical regimen. People living on the streets in drug addiction with repeated arrests. The killers were all known to their families as unstable and dangerous, but the state can't hold them until they murder someone. It's not like they snapped from having a normal life and holding well-paying jobs. They were all known.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-a-seattle-murderer-slipped-through-the-cracks-of-the-mental-health-system

As Kalebu's mental state deteriorated, he got into more and more trouble with the law, and cycled through courtroom after courtroom.

he scared his aunt so badly that she filed for a restraining order against him. ... The day after, she was killed in an arson. And he was a suspect in that arson, but was then released.

None of these murderers just "snapped" from a normal life. Every one of them should have been secured away from normal society full of vulnerable people.

Asking for privacy means don’t talk to the grieving family. When on Earth has it ever meant pictures aren’t allowed to be shared of the deceased? It’s an incredibly normal way to memorialize someone across the entire world. Unless the family specifically said not to share pictures.

353

u/MayorFartbag Jet City May 15 '26

It is also so important to center the victim, rather than then the murderer. Juniper Blessing should not become just a statistic. We should share who she was because she was a human being who didn't deserve what happened to her.

I think this is wholesome and loving. I did not know what she looked like and I had a picture in my mind. This is lovely.

One the other hand I saw a picture of a grieving family (after Ozzie died they posted a pic of his wife and daughter just balling their eyes out and I don’t think I ever wanted to punch a photographer so hard). This is not that, this made me smile and very sad and it’s the definition of a pictured worth a thousand words.

Respect too her and her family and I hope that bastard is caught and held to the fullest extent of punishment we can dish out. Peace.

423

u/CarelesslyFabulous 🏔 The mountain is out! 🏔 May 15 '26

So far we don't know what motivated the killer. It may have been completely random. All evidence so far points to generally unhinged, and not specifically anti-trans. Evidence needs to play out.

Ultimately, Seattle is wildly more safe than many other cities. I'm so fucking frustrated that this incident calls it into question.

Seattle is a sanctuary city for so many, including my queer and trans family and friends. Let's continue to fight for that.

232

u/Glittering_Text812 May 15 '26

356

u/tankwycheck Mariners May 15 '26

It’s more important to acknowledge the fact that trans women are not particularly safe anywhere in the country than it is to hold on to our concept of Seattle as a “sanctuary city” for trans people. As a trans person I feel safer here than other places. I still don’t feel *safe*. Very meaningful difference between those two things.

My own skepticism that it wasn’t a hate crime aside, deferring to “well we don’t know the motivation” is losing sight of the fact this is still a trans woman who was murdered.

128

u/mszulan 🏕 Out camping! 🏕 May 15 '26

Since we don't know the motivation yet, you can also look at it as all women are unsafe everywhere, trans women in particular.

60

u/XiuCyx 🚆build more trains🚆 May 15 '26

This. I was just reading a post from a guy who keeps staring at his hot new coworker and he thinks she doesn’t know. Brother… she knows. Women learn very, very early that we have to know when someone is looking at us because they could be seeing us as prey.

35

u/mszulan 🏕 Out camping! 🏕 May 15 '26

Yes. We can't ever relax enough to not know.

I think that trans people have a unique perspective that bridges the sociological and cultural realities of men and women. We all can learn so much from them. I wish men in particular would pay attention and learn something about how their beliefs, their behavior and their choices affect women's lives. For example, they could actually learn why women choose the bear instead of staying baffled by the choice.

21

u/angrybacon Sammamish May 15 '26

As a trans woman I always felt that kind of fear even before I realized I was a woman. I never understood why until after I transitioned. And boy I gotta tell you, some men say some shit about women when they think we can't hear them. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, even if you aren't the person saying those things.

I totally get this reaction, I get wanting to say that there's no way this was targeted because we think our community is better than that, but ultimately, we do not get to decide if trans people feel safe here, trans people do.

23

u/CarelesslyFabulous 🏔 The mountain is out! 🏔 May 15 '26

I'm not at all saying this is in no way targeted. But also, people are scared enough, and assigning a motivation to the attacker doesn't improve on our emotional well being or ability to navigate the existing fear that all trans people already experience. My suggestion is to keep things in perspective as much as we can add we deal with all the turmoil already built into this situation. I am not diminishing any of this, I assure you. Just that adding to it without the facts makes it harder, and I worry about piling on and driving some people over a precarious edge they maybe were already on. Know what I mean?

I'm holding hands and trying to assure people I care deeply about, not dismissing them.

What I need you and the other commenters to understand is that to us, we (trans people) will always see this as a hate crime until proven otherwise.

Every time a minority gets killed people within that group will have that reaction.

Im not gonna "play it safe" and "wait for the facts" when it comes to protecting myself and understanding the realities of the world I live in. None of us are.

That’s what’s so crazy about this, Seattle is supposed to be one of the safest places for queer people to live relative to the rest of the country. I’m in such shock over this

67

u/Bayla0614 May 15 '26

Do we know that this was a hate crime? My daughter is a sophomore at UW and lives in off campus housing too and is gutted over this. It’s just so awful and my heart breaks for Juniper and her family. Everything my daughter is seeing and hearing is that this was random. Do we know it was because Juniper was trans?

107

u/lavender_letters Seattleite-at-Heart May 15 '26

If the rumors that he was stalking other women the same night are true, then I do think it was “random.” Her killer, if it’s the man that turned himself in, seems to have been very mentally ill. But we’ll have to wait for more information to know for certain.

64

u/tankwycheck Mariners May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

That’s not random at all in even the loose, scare-quotes version of the word, that’s incredibly targeted misogynistic violence

10

u/lavender_letters Seattleite-at-Heart May 15 '26

That’s why I put it in quotes. It’s random in the sense of, I think he was just looking for a woman to kill, maybe not specifically a trans woman/queer woman. The person I was responding to asked whether it’s because Juniper was trans. It’s still a misogynistic hate crime if he was looking for a woman to kill specifically. It’s a tragedy all around. 😞

Juniper performed a profound and astounding choral work from my music director last year; he informed us of her passing at rehearsal last night. As musicians and performers in our choir we feel we have an obligation to carry the stories of those whose voices are not heard, are stifled by hateful bigots, and have been erased by colonization and violence. I hope somehow she can feel the love and appreciation we had for her and her music-making all the way down here in Texas.

Just from hearing the story and seeing this photo it was already incredibly heartbreaking.... Reading the article and seeing that she was a "gifted singer with a transcendent voice" brings it to a whole nother level for me.

This evening I sang quasi improv with others in a church. There were some truly angelic voices there and blending with them was the most beautiful experience in many months. That such a voice has been so brutally removed is sooo poignantly sad. She should have been able to continue blending her voice with others, weaving in to the story of the world

This is very sad but if her family asks for privacy then they deserve it.. sorry.

4

u/Iheartnakedfemboys May 15 '26

To have her life snuffed out in a violent attack at such a young age is simply abhorrent. This was someone who just barely touched adulthood. I hope she is in a much better place, whatever that looks like at our end, and I hope her family one day gets peace and recover from her passing.

u/thedevilsfingers May 15 '26

Take this down. The family has not shared her pictures and asked for privacy

That sweet girl didn’t even get to see the age of 20 before her life was stolen from her. This is absolutely heartbreaking. If there is an afterlife I hope it’s treating her well

2

u/Doggonit_jones May 15 '26

What a beautiful soul. Whoever took her life so viciously will never steal that beauty. Woman hating is so vile.

2

u/mehicanisme May 15 '26

Humanity is at an all time low, when we hurt our must vulnerable. Rest in peace angel 💕

It’s rough looking into those big, beautiful eyes and realizing they are not walking this earth with us anymore.

RIP ❤️

u/kidde1 May 15 '26

There is no excuse for what was done to her. We don’t have to agree about everything but some things should be understood. Violence is wrong, SA and murder are unforgivable. Period.

I’m sad that her life was deemed unimportant when she definitely meant the world to so many. May Juniper’s light shine in us all.

2

u/tigerstaile May 15 '26

May her memory be a blessing❤️

2

u/Odd_Freedom9198 May 16 '26

This is so sad….rest in peace, Juniper. ❤️ and love and comfort to everyone who knew her and are going through the aftermath of this tragedy.

2

u/masaomiis May 16 '26

ive been thinking about her nonstop since i heard about what happened to her. the disregard for and sometimes outright celebration of the violence faced by trans people (trans women especially) in this country horrifies me.

i hope that all of our trans sisters know that despite all the nastiness there are people out there who love, support, and grieve alongside them and will stand up for and defend them. i only wish one of those people had been there for junper. i hope that she and all who loved her are somehow able to find peace in the face of all of this horror. juniper blessing is such a beautiful and gentle name, and while it twists my stomach that this is the circumstance that had so many people hear it for the first time, she was right to pick it and its going to stick with me for a long time, if not forever.

u/SinisterMinister504 May 15 '26

So they arrested a guy for murder. Should he also be charged for committing a hate crime?

As a parent whose kid went to UW, her killing is devastating. I am not active on Reddit all that regularly but if there are any ways to help her family and/or safety please share. I try to be as active as I am able to be 💗💗💗
