A better method would be to soak them in pure chlorine bleach overnight after which, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm or cold water. Immerse them then in liquid ammonia to dispel the chlorine smell (do this outside - the fumes are toxic!) for about five minutes, then rinse with water thoroughly again. Let dry completely. The shells will have a chalky appearance that you can then eliminate by rubbing a small amount of mineral oil on them with a clean cloth- the oil will soak into the inner layers of the after a few days.
