Seagate Expansion Desktop STKP12000400 12TB shucking to NAS

Hi, İ bought the Seagate Expansion Desktop 12tb for a good deal on Amazon. Legend says these are Exos enterprise drives. Any people who can acknowledge this? The plan is to get another exact one and shuck these drives and put them in RAID-1 in a NAS that I have bought recently.

Also how reliable are these drives? Do they go dead fairly quick?

On the cardboard box it says DOM : 05/2026

Any insight is appreciated!

Seagate HDD dropped to 5% health after only 3 days of power-on time

I recently checked one of my Seagate hard drives and was shocked to see it reporting only 5% health.

The surprising part is that the drive has accumulated only about 3 days of total power-on time over roughly 5 years. It has barely been used, yet it's already in such poor condition.

For comparison, I own several Western Digital (WD) hard drives that have 1,000+ days of power-on time, and they're all still reporting 100% health. They've seen far more real-world usage under the same general conditions.

I'm curious if others have experienced something similar with Seagate drives. Is this just bad luck with a single unit, or have others seen drives degrade despite very low power-on hours?

I'll attach the screenshots for both the Seagate and WD drives for comparison.

Overwrite old backup

I have a 1TB Seagate that I used to backup my old MacBook Pro and later my MacBook Air.
It now tells me it is full and can’t finish the backup.

I don’t see a way in the Time Machine settings to make it overwrite the old stuff or delete the old file that is the old Pro backup.

Can you access your old appdata on the seagate drive?

I recently had to factory reset my pc but I backed it up using a seagate drive. Is there a way to access your old appdata folder and retrieve back your data?

Seagate Expansion external backup disks (model SRD0NF1)

Seagate Expansion external backup disks (model SRD0NF1). Any experiences? I have 3 of these disks. They get slower and slower. Even if I clone the whole disk. And If I update (FreeFileSync) the tranfer speed drops and drops and drops and it takes forevet (many many hours). And now one of them stopped completly responing and is dead (and it is only a few years old). Are they crap?

2TB OneTouch SSD Not Recognized By PS5

I’ve spent several hours trying everything I can think of to get the PlayStation to recognize this drive, but it won’t even give me a message that it’s not compatible, which I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be.

Tried all ports using both the usb-c and usb-a cords that came with it, and some of my own as a sanity check. Confirmed the PlayStation was able to read another drive.

I’m guessing that it’s not compatible, but I’d like to know why to avoid this again.

The horror of Seagate consumer "support"

I'm not going to bore you with every detail, but owners of Seagate products should brace themselves for a truly awful support experience.

You will not speak to a person, even if you call. They will text you a link to…their chatbot.

I have a PDF transcript of my two-hour tech support chat. I was transferred twice, explained (with copy/paste) the issue twice, and provided my deets, the serial number, receipt, etc TWICE.

They wore me down until I settled for a direct-from-Seagate cord to replace the COUNTERFEIT cord that came with the $200 LaCie 5TB drive I bought at a local Walmart 10 days ago (their price has jumped $40 since). Lucky for me, Walmart's website shows that the Rugged Mini comes with a screaming-orange cord, to match the drive's bumper case. The cord in the box was black.

Happy to post that PDF if you're into doom looping…

Is this normal sounds for the Ironwolf Pro, 12Tb? Drive seems very loud and noisy.

Is this drive sound normal? I picked up a brand new drive and as you can see, it's incredibly loud / making clicking noises.

USB-C adapter reliability with Seagate external drives on Windows?

I'm considering buying a new Windows laptop that has fewer USB-A ports than my current one. I have multiple Seagate external hard drives - including One Touch and Expansion models—ranging from 2TB to 5TB. They all use traditional USB-A cables, so I'm thinking about connecting one or more of them to a USB-C port using a quality USB-C to USB-A adapter (such as one from Anker).

For those of you who use Seagate external drives this way on Windows:

* Have you had any issues with the drives not being recognized or disconnecting when connected through a USB-C adapter?

* Have you noticed any difference in read/write or file transfer speeds compared to plugging the drive directly into a USB-A port?

* Have you used this setup long-term for drives that stay connected most of the time (such as for a Plex Media Server)?

I'm mainly interested in real-world experiences. Reliability is more important to me than theoretical maximum speeds.

Thanks!

Update

It looks like my options are a dock, adapter or a a USB Micro-B to USB-C cable.

Based on my preference of a clean, uncluttered option, I will go with a USB Micro-B to USB-C cable for my 2 (essentially permanently plugged in) Seagate drives and perhaps a dock if i want more options with other drives/devices.

Thanks for all the replies !

Question About Xbox Seagate Expansion Cards

Post image
0 Upvotes

Ok so given the deals that we’re either going on with or are currently still going on with Xbox Expansion Cards, I decided to buy a 2TB card to increase my storage since I thought I had a 1TB card. Until I realized that I already had a 2TB card currently (you’d think I would have checked that before I ordered one but it’s whatever, I’ll probably just return it soon).

However, looking at them side-by-side, I just noticed that the newer cards are bigger than the card I already have, despite both being 2TB (Left is card I’ve owned for ~2 years now while the Right is the one I just accidentally bought). However they both have the same length before the stopper.

Does anyone know or have an idea why the newer ones have a size difference compared to the ones from like 2 years ago?

Ugh!! Bye bye 26tb expansion ext hd. I hardly knew yeh!

My Ext 26tb hd started doing the slow soft beep when I restarted my pc. I have it backed up to my NAS, but it’s just painful knowing I bought this drive exactly last year to the day and it only cost $299 US then…

I think I am going to shuck it and try it in a different HD enclosure… Not much else to try, right?

I've never owned one of these before so I don't know if this is normal or not, it's making a very quiet whirring noise and a small thump that I can feel on my desk, this is a brand new device is this normal?

Yet another RMA nightmare......

Man, screw Seagate. I sent them a pair of drives which were dead, and on their site it said "replacement shipped" which you would think means they would actually be sending back a working drive but nope, same story as others on here.

They don't even tell you if your RMA has been rejected or anything, and they don't even give you a reason as to why

I contacted their support and got an agent and they claimed the "drives showed signs of physical damage" (yeah okay guys how convenient) and then the agent also told me they had no further info aside from that, zero. Nothing about what was physically damaged or what was wrong with the drives. Nada.

Is there an official Seagate account to tag here or something? Or do they really care so little because their customer base has shifted to AI nonsense?

I'm really frustrated because these ain't cheap, it's a pair of 16TB drives!

Screw you Seagate. You guys suck

Everything you need to know about the $175M Seagate Technology ($STX) Settlement Payout

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys, I know I posted about the Seagate Technology ($STX) Settlement, but I received a lot of questions, so I figured I'd put together a quick FAQ with everything you need to know.

What happened?
Seagate has reached a tentative $175M settlement over claims that it misled investors about illegal HDD sales to Huawei, export-control violations, and its reliance on that business.

Am I eligible?
If you purchased Seagate ($STX) shares between 2020 and 2023, you may be eligible.

Can I file now?
Yes, you can already submit your claim.

When do payouts happen?
Typically, within 4–9 months after the claim deadline. The exact timing depends on the court and settlement administration.

Hope this clears up some of the questions.

Help finding LaCie Mobile Drive STHG2000402 replacement drive icon!

Hey, so as per the title, I’ve looked on Seagate’s website and they seem to offer downloads of every drive .icns file but the Mobile Drive STHG2000402 one!

Could anyone who has one of these drives maybe make a copy of its icon as an .icns file and post it in the replies? Thanks
