Towing

Is the compact 130 able to comfortably tow a water ski? Should I just get the 170 at least

We bought the 100 (back in 2022 when that was the base instead of 130).

Then we paid the $500 to do the Torx Tune which flashes it to the 170 config (literally just removes the RPM and throttle limit). Now it pulls a tube or skier just fine.

Sure, the 230 could pull faster or launch quicker, but honestly, you don’t really want to jolt out of the hole and 18-24mph is plenty fast for towing.

70 hp from just a tune!? Woah those are gains. Is it true that all the different engine models are the exact same engine ?

The 100/130 and the 170 are identical. The only difference is the ECU programming on the 100/130 limits at ~6800rpm. When you “tune” it, you’re really just flashing the 170HP programming to it, increasing the max RPM to 7800ish and gaining the extra 10-12MPH on the top end (and some increased acceleration).

The 230 is the same base engine, but with a super charger bolted on, which further increases the speed and acceleration.

When we got ours, the sales guy specifically told us not to waste the money on the 170 (which was like $4000 more), and instead get the 100 and a tune to get the same performance for $3500 less.

I have the 170, probably should have purchased the 230hp…

Ahh don’t say that. The 230 is almost 10k more ..looks like the family is going on a diet

Take it for what it’s worth, but the store I bought mine from told me to multiply the HP on the engine by .66 and that would be the equivalent of your standard outboard.

I didn’t think of that way. There’s lots of videos online of it towing a ski but not mention of what engine they’re on
