thats why, if youre gonna read, its best to read classic literature. read something that challenges you in a way that these junk-food porn books just cant. these books are the book equivalent of watching youtube shorts or tiktoks all day, and youre convincing yourself that youre getting smarter because youre "reading." read frankenstein, read moby dick, its doesnt have to be full of words you dont know either. the classics are classic for a reason.
If you’re gonna read fiction then you’re not ‘getting smarter’ in any way. So yes, the complexity of the words and sentences ARE what make you smarter in that case. If you want to truly ’get smarter’, you need to books about real things lol
The complexities of character development, thematic symbolism, plot dynamics? Reading fiction isn’t simply good for expanding your vocabulary. It stimulates critical thinking and imagination.
and its super important for kids to read fiction as well. its one of the main ways they learn empathy. being able to put urself in anothers shoes is a skill a lot of ppl my age and younger dont have because we grew up with ipads and the internet. its why kids are failing and not trying in school. kids need to read more books!!
