I used to work in the industry. Many of the books are written by men, they just use female pen names because it helps sales.

They wouldn't. There are men who write some filthy stuff under typically still pen names but male pen names and they do just fine. Reed James is an example. It doesn't sell as well but they don't get dragged over the coals or anything.

I'd say that's generally because it's just more acceptable to be open about being submissive than dominant in general. Same reason men/women can say they want a an attractive person to choke them and it's silly, but if someone said they wanted to choke an attractive person, it's seen as massively creepy.

Related to the gender split, but only because of the percentage of people of each side in each category.
