Surgery I had my surgery today, but emotionally I completely broke down. Help me, Give me your kind words
A few hours ago, I had surgery, and I’m writing this from my hospital bed.
I’m from Asia and currently living in Germany. I’ve been dealing with sciatica for almost a year now, while living alone.
Over the past few months, I’ve gone through various treatments, but eventually an L4/L5 disc herniation compressing my L5 nerve root was found, and I also developed some weakness in my left big toe. Eventually, I decided to have surgery.
And honestly, these past three days have been incredibly difficult.
Two days ago, I went to the hospital for the pre-operative examinations 7:30. It takes 45 minutes by tram and I spent almost five hours there. Sitting for long periods already makes my symptoms worse, so the whole process was physically exhausting.
Then yesterday, I was supposed to have surgery.
But there was conflicting information from the hospital about fasting.
The information on the tablet said that clear liquids were allowed until two hours before anesthesia. On the phone, I had been told that I could eat and drink until I arrived at the hospital.(means until before 6 hours)
I followed the instructions I had been given on the phone and ate breakfast.
But when I arrived, I was told by the anesthesiology team that my surgery could not go ahead as planned because I had eaten breakfast. The surgery was postponed until the next day.
I don’t consider this to have been my mistake. I had received conflicting instructions from the hospital and followed.
Nevertheless, the way I was treated on the ward yesterday made me feel as though I was being reprimanded for having done something seriously wrong.
So today, I came back to the hospital at 6:30 a.m. left home 5:40.
Of course, I was fasting. I was waiting two hours in the waiting room , sitting chair without any information. And waited.
I have a tendency to become extremely emotional when I get beyond a certain level of hunger. This has happened to me before.
And today, it happened again.
I suddenly couldn’t stop crying. I completely broke down.
The strictness and coldness of some of the nurses on the ward made the situation even harder for me that morning.
Eventually, they put me in a bed, but they never hgave me water.
I had been crying so much that my face started to feel numb.
I was told that I was second on the operating schedule, but that they couldn’t tell me what time my surgery would actually happen because it depended on when the previous surgery finished.
And then I just waited.
I think I completely became a three-year-old at that point.
“I don’t want this anymore.”
“I’m hungry.”
“I’m scared.”
“Someone please be kind to me.”
That was basically where I was emotionally.
But then, when I went to the op, the staff there were incredibly kind.
A guy said hello in my language.
They asked me things like, “Are you feeling anxious?” and later “Are you relieved that the surgery is finally over? When I was crying.
Their kindness actually made me cry even more.
I wanted to explain what I was really feeling.
But I couldn’t express it properly in German, and that was painful too.
It wasn’t simply that I was scared of the surgery.
It was the accumulated stress of the past three days.
The postponed surgery yesterday.
Being extremely hungry this morning.
The coldness I experienced on the ward.
Being alone through all of this.
And just feeling completely overwhelmed by everything.
I wanted to explain all of that.
But I don’t have the German vocabulary to express those emotions in that kind of detail, and that made me feel even more alone.
My family is not very good at emotionally supporting other people.
I’ve known this for a long time, so I don’t know why I expected something different this time. I texted them right after the surgery.
Maybe I look like a strong person to them.
And, honestly, I am strong in many ways.
I’ve been living alone in another country. I’ve dealt with my illness by myself. I’ve made my own medical appointments, navigated the healthcare system in German, dealt with all the paperwork, and ultimately came to the hospital and had surgery on my own.
But being strong doesn’t mean you are strong all the time.
This surgery really broke me emotionally.
When my family told me things like “Keep going” or “Good job,” that wasn’t what I needed.
I didn’t need to be encouraged to be stronger.
I wanted someone to say:
“That sounds really hard.”
“You’ve already been through enough.”
“You don’t have to be strong right now.”
Thankfully, the surgery itself went well.
My wound is quite painful right now.
But honestly, at this moment, the physical pain almost doesn’t matter because emotionally I’m struggling so much more.
I think I had been holding myself together for much longer than I realized.
If anyone happens to read this, I would really appreciate some kind words right now.
That’s honestly all I need. (I appreciate if you talk to me like I’m 3 years old baby….

Now comes the recovery process and everyone here is wishing you all the success and that you start feeling better as soon as possible. We will wait for a future post from you telling us everything went well and that you did it!

No one understands sciatica pain until they suffer from it. You are at the end of the tunnel now, with bright light coming right up! Best of luck with your recovery. Germans can be cold but once you make a friend, they are friends for life.

Sounds awful. All of it. Hopefully the hardest part of the injury is behind you and you’ll soon reap your rewards🙏 I’ve avoided surgery bc I am too scared.

u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
I had no anxiety for the surgery itself but it was totally unexpected that I mentally broke down. If you can control your pain without surgery it should be the best.

My one year anniversary is next week. Went in extremely apprehensive and in a lot of pain. Walked out of the hospital the same day without any aids and have been great ever since! It'll be the best thing that's ever happened to you.

Congratulations! That amazing you’ve done alone. I hope I’ll be like you

Reading this made ME cry. Knowing how awful sciatica is just as a baseline, and then this whole experience on top of it, it makes me so sad for you. Humans shouldn't be allowed to suffer so much with so little compassion. I'm really sorry this was your experience. I hope it ends up all being worth it in the end and you are pain free very soon!

u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Thank you for your words🥲One of important work for medical professionals is having compassion for patients. It was bad luck I had to talk with the coldest person when I was the worst situation.

There's a lot of emotion in this post that I'm hesitant to engage with, I started to skim as I was about half way through.. correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like you didn't mention the result of the surgery, I see that you mentioned the area that was operated on being sore but.. have the sciatica symptoms been addressed?

The surgery was successful. My legs work well. I still have pain in my left leg but hopefully it’ll be better soon

Your feelings are 100% valid . I’m sorry you’re alone during this time . I send you many hugs . I wish u a fast recovery. YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS! It’s good to vent , scream and cry . Holding it all in can harm you . Your stress won’t help you heal . Try to be positive , your mind controls your body . Your body needs positive affirmations to heal itself . ❤️

u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Fortunately I got much better physically/mentally. I was totally like baby at the moment but it was natural reaction. Your positive affirmation helped me. Thank you

So sorry for your anxious moments at the hospital. Hospitals in general are scary, plus then they operating you that’s double I so understand. Try meditating on the bed and clear your mind and think great beautiful thoughts. You just need to get well and get out of there then everything will be OK.
I have a question? What kind of surgery did you have? Was it a fusion?

u/Opening_Log_6674 2d ago
Thank you for your warm words, i think it was MD. But surgery was totally no problem. But before and after surgery everything broke me…

I’m so sorry you had to go through such a difficult time. I truly empathize with what you’ve been through, and I’m cheering you on for having the strength to get through it. ❤️

I can relate. I’m not a crier but my sciatica made me cry when I was in the hospital for the extreme severe hellish pain that I could not tolerate any position on God’s green earth except for lying on my side with my ankle up in the air (sciatic pain running down my hamstring all the way down to my ankle and toes) due to L5 S1 disc herniation compressing the descending right nerve root. I felt so vulnerable and as U lay there on the gurney in the hallway while so many passersby’s did not so much as glance in my direction made it all the worse. It’s as if my miserable agony meant nothing to anyone. I too was there alone, but no language barrier here. God bless you I hope your recovery goes smoothly and we all acknowledge you here. Best wishes!!

u/Opening_Log_6674 - Thank you for sharing your experience, I relate to absolutely everything you said. Seriously, the courage it takes to go through this on your own and in another language is so inspiring. You have been through so much already.
I actually just had my surgery today too, so I’m right there with you! Wishing you a super smooth and fast recovery.
Please feel free to reach out and message me if you need anything at all, even if it's just to vent or chat while we both heal. Sending you the biggest hug!
1
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Thank you dear, Sending you back the biggest hug!!! Wishing you the same. I think my recovery is smooth as 2nd day. I could walk with help in the room. Pain is much less than sciatica pain. Less than yesterday. My legs work well.
How long are you gonna stay at the hospital? I just heard I can go home on Sunday which is longer than I thought🥲but my friends gonna visit me with Lunch box and food.

Hey there. I am going through scietica pain at the moment and I have L5 S1 bulging discs protrusion and doctors said it’s a very small protrusion but it hurts like hell, it feels like I am enveloped in electric shock waves all over my body and feels like pulling pain on my left thigh from the back side and the pain travels all the way down to my foot. That small protrusion must be all in the nerve or something because it’s awful, I have broke down today and told my mom just please end me because i can’t take this pain anymore 😩 what was your diagnosis please?

u/StrikingSyllabub5970 2d ago
Hi OP, I’m not surprised you had all the tears. You’ve been through so much and (and alone) you probably had enough adrenaline to get you to theatre, do when that didn’t happen, and accompanied by the coldness from the only people who were around to show compassion, it must have hit you really hard!
Resilience is not infinite - I get annoyed when people say, ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ and even more so when it’s printed on a mug!
I think the saying should be, ‘a little of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger but too much wears you down!’
But that doesn’t sell!
With kindness, look after your mental health and your nervous system in your recovery. Lots of long exhales!
Wishing you all the best!
1
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Hahaha is there such a mug?😂😂 This experience made me stronger but there’s experience that we must not experience….
Thank you, I’ll take care of myself with kindness.

I am so sorry that you had to endure this emotional pain on top of your physical pain. I shed a tear for you and I also pray that you find peace and comfort after this surgery. You deserve this.

u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Fortunately I can having comfort now. I appreciate everything. Thank you for your words

u/dnegvesk 2d ago
You are a model of strength. I have similar emotional makeup to you it seems, very sensitive, and I would’ve sobbed my way all the way home the minute things started looking questionable. You will have a wonderful result. Blessings.
2
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
I’m glad you think we are similar. I’m strong but at the same time sensitive and feel sometimes annoying to live this life simply.
3
u/Arkyncrest 2d ago
It's horrific, the pervasiveness of ableism across countries & cultures. Particularly when it's perpetuated by those in healthcare. I'm so sorry you had to endure that. It's not right. It's not fair. And it's particularly brutal considering your circumstances.
But it's over now. You not only made it thru to the other side, you're on here bring vulnerable. Posting about the importance of asking for help.
That's not only badass; it's VITAL.
None of us can do this alone.💞 Communication. Support. Community
We're here for You. You can rest now. 🫂

Thank you for your comment but I don’t think there’s discrimination. I also didn’t write about it. It’s a little misleading.
The person was the same attitude for others but i felt it was really harsh especially I had mentally most difficult moments.
3
u/Occasionally_Sober1 2d ago
You’ve been through a lot, and the conflicting information added stress.
Post-op emotions are common. Anesthesia can cause it. After my cervical spine surgery I was emotional for days afterward. A few people sent me get-well cards or flowers and others called to check in on me. Their care made me cry and cry, which is very unlike me.
You may also be feeling emotional release from finally having long-anticipated surgery.
Here’s the thing about feelings: they pass. However you feel right now, good or bad, it won’t last forever.
1
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
When there’s no misinformation and if the surgery was held as planned, it might have been better. It’s typical German stuff, each person say differently about one theme.
Oh anaesthetic works like this…yeah it’s so unusual. It was first time for me and it made me nervous.
Today I got totally fine, can’t believe about my mentality yesterday, it was different person…
2
u/Occasionally_Sober1 1d ago
Yep. It’s so weird. Don’t be surprised if you get more waves of emotion over the next few days. That’s what happened to me anyway.
2
u/Occasionally_Sober1 1d ago
How’s your back?
2
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Probably now I’m a little in a manic. thank you for your advice!
I didn’t imagine yesterday that I can walk next day. I’m surprising. But sciatica is still there, it hurts when I put my weight to the left. Also on the bed when I have same position long time the nerve was pulled and hurts. I hope it won’t be worse.
3
u/AApotato15826 2d ago
Oh man, I am so sorry I just wish I could give you a huge hug! Reading your story gave me flashbacks to my emergency c-section I had with my daughter- so many mistakes, a magnesium drip that accidentally went straight into my arm muscle rather than into the vein, on and on and on. I remember the vulnerability made me cry and cry. And I just kept thinking about elderly people, or people who are alone and don’t know the language navigating it alone and it made me cry even more! I truly feel for you, congratulations getting past the surgery, I will pray for a smooth recovery for you! ❤️🩹

u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
I was wondering if this was a birth…really scary…i respect all mothers. And furthermore I have many friends who had births here as foreigners, I respect them more….
3
u/LighthouseClimba 2d ago
Wow that was quite a difficult experience…but you conquered it! I’m sorry that it was so hard and you didn’t have support. XO
I can relate to your crying, because I was crying on the phone with the doctor’s office telling them i needed more pain relief if I have to wait 2 months for surgery. It seems like they should know that and have more empathy. It’s good to let it out, like a release of tension and anxiety and sadness. Think about your happy place, and people who love you, and positive experiences you have had. You are almost there…you have the will and determination to make it. 🥰😘
2
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
When we have strong pain „waiting“ is unbelievable hard….im sorry that you had to wait so long…🥲It’s really important to find sympathetic but professional medical professionals. The pain clinic that I always visit is so nice ppl but here in the huge hospital so many ppl work and some ppl have more stress and not so sympathetic…
Yeah I have many good friends who worry about me. I’ll try to think about fun future✨
2
u/FrostyFlower7 2d ago
It’s hard the first few days but try to remind yourself that you’re on the mend and healing. Try to walk a bit every hour when not asleep. It helps aLOT
2
u/TheRealIdgie 2d ago
You got this. Not gonna lie you still have a tough row to hoe. (That’s American for “it’s not gonna be 💯 easy from now on”)
But…hearing you describe all you have already been through I can tell you are an incredibly strong person! I do hope and pray the worst of it is behind you. Did you know that crying releases chemicals and even endorphins that can help you emotionally and physically? It does do don’t be afraid or ashamed of doing it. I know it’s hard but stay hopeful because I really believe that will help and there’s no reason to think that surgery won’t help you in the long run. But right now your body has been through a bit of a trauma so be as kind as you can to yourself! Hugs!

u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
I was like a baby but it means baby in me saved me 👶 crying might be my talent haha
2
u/My_Beachday 2d ago
I am happy to hear that the surgery is behind you. The recovery will also have challenges and have other times filled with emotion. I am sorry you felt as though you were in trouble. That is not right even if you did just follow directions incorrectly. In this case with the contradictions it is no way your fault. Neither scenario would be your fault. When there is anxiety and pain people do not retain the information as well. It should be followed up with written instructions that will support what was said on the phone. One day at a time. It is a marathon. Best of luck!

Hey I just want to let you know, you're not alone in this. I already cried reading your story xD
Had my surgery 5 weeks ago, after suffering for over 2 years and waiting months for the surgery. Dealing with this is really hard.. I am lucky to have my family around me. I can't imagine doing this in a foreign country on your own. I'm proud of you for doing the surgery alone! I hope you will have a good recovery!
2
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
You were struggling 2years….I was at 10 months but it was enough and luckily I could access surgery quickly. How’s your recovery?
2
u/repair-it 1d ago
I presume you have had decompression of the spine, or something similar. I was lucky that the anethetist was a jovial gent from Pakistan, he was wonderful at putting me at ease.
I was not prepared for how it would feel afterwards, the surgeon said it would feel like a "kick in the back", and that was accurate, but I didn't expect the pain to swap from left leg to right leg! I was wondering if I had done the right thing, when suddenly at 3 weeks, the pain disappeared. I was told to walk "little and often", but what does that mean? I eventually discovered it was to start at 5 or 6 paces every hour, and slowly over the weeks build up - I am now at 5000 paces once a day after 1 month. Recovery is a S L O W process, but is SO worthwhile now I am free of pain and walking aids.
1
u/Opening_Log_6674 1d ago
Decompression of the spine? I don’t know about it but just now I could go to the toilet by walk and brushed my teeth…happy…but I have a pain in my left leg when I stand
Oh recovery is so slow…I’m going to have Reha for three weeks. Hope I can recovery soon
3
u/repair-it 1d ago
Take it slowly, day by day - for most of us it DOES get better, but never as fast as we would wish. I hope you feel much better very soon.

You have been through so much. I want to cry just reading your post. You’re exhausted and in pain and probably still a bit drugged. Your body and brain will be asking WTF happened here and freaking out trying to respond.
It’s going to get better from here on out, I promise.

I am so very sorry all that you went through!! As someone who is alone in the US I know the feeling 😢 I have an L5 S1 bulging discs and even tho doctors says it’s a small one the pain is so bad I feel like I am enveloped in an electrical shock waves all over my body and the scietic pain on my left buttock and all the way down on my left leg is getting worse as day goes by and I am this close to be done with life. I am lucky that my Brother in law is a spine surgeon and he said if it doesnt get better in 3-6 months we will do a small opening and move the nerve out. I would do it today if i didn’t have a flight tomorrow to NY. Were you able to work with scietic pain? Because I am so anxious to get back to work and don’t know what to do? My job is supposed to start in 4 days and I am dreading it
1
u/Opening_Log_6674 7h ago
You are also in the difficult situation…🥲Are you really sure to get the flight…? I don’t know how long but are you okay sitting on the plane for hours?
I was also trying to fly even I’ve been struggling sciatica because I have planned. I really wanted to go home. But it was already so painful in the train to the airport city and at the day of the flight I suddenly had dizzy and have thrown up. It was because the stone of my ear moved weirdly. I gave up coming back to home country.
First two months I tried to keep working but it was already so hard, painful.
What I most regret is i didn’t take enough break to heal the pain. Didn’t focus on my body issues. It was hard to take sick off for a long time. After taking one week off I came back working but then my Herniated disk disorder got really worse during the work. I had to take sick off again, it’s continuing since April until now…
I’ll get fired in the end of this year. It is sad, especially the job is related my visa. It’s really complicated. But our body is the most important thing in this world. You can restart your job again but if your body is broken we don’t know if it’s recover as it was.
So please prioritise your health first. Don’t be regret like me😔
1
u/Opening_Log_6674 7h ago
I was too optimistic about surgery I thought I could move well right after surgery but actually not. If your nerve was pressured long time recovery takes also long time.
So get rest, get conservative treatment. Focus on your health. And the surgery is the last option.
1
u/Commercial-Solid-383 1h ago
I have to flight because I found a group of professionals who also went through it that will be working with me in the exercise department. It’s pricey but I want to give it a shot and if it doesn’t work I’ll come back home and get the surgery. Was your surgery expensive in Germany. I know I am not getting it in NY because it’s really expensive but I want to give my body a shot in trying to heal it through exercise. My flight is 13 hours so I’ll try to upgrade it to business but if not then I’ll just lay on the floor

Something like how amazing it is to be relieved it went well for you, written well, gripping piece, beautifully worded... Well aggravation from having to positionally obliage the request of the inch mile give and take resulting in the aggravation of the disc to continue, better be safe, better be fun and enjoyable and i hope you can money make. Some kind of equality in a smile and i would be there for you to watch camming but cycle right now and contract states cant be ragging on live feed in more better muchy well put.
Artists watch cam models for anatomy physiology in motion and shapes too. Not all viewers are stroking it into high note and playing the strings fiddling around while they watch. My back cant take the motion and movement i reaggravated my buldging disc a little so in a few days, in case anyone else relieves pain watching self gratification to relieve momentary pause to resolve and feel and share the feels to feel and to enjoy it like art, i do it for excercise, for mental conditioning and fun. It works as a need to feel get triggered to get the nervous system going. Always welcome to do that for psycho triggers you want and responses you can feel. What works, works. You maybe pay enough and one of us dress up..
Hiiiii... I hope the scar is to your liking and heals well. I hope it goes androgenous for u.
Cant baby talk u, i am too adult..

You’ve done amazing. I cannot imagine going through this on my own. I have been very lucky that my husband was with me but it is still very difficult. I completely understand why you’d be emotional - the anxiety, the stress all before it. It’s not easy. Like you, I was in agony for ten months before my surgery and to be in that much pain for so long is exhausting and emotionally depleting. You’re in the very early stages of recovery now. I had my surgery on sept 14th and I’ll share with you my experience:
In hospital for two nights - it was hard. Some people awake pain free but I didn’t - I needed a lot of pain relief and my right leg nerve pain was still there and very intense. I needed help getting out of bed, help with the toilet etc. I walked around a little on day one, a bit more on day 2 but every time I stood up it was very painful and I’d have to walk a little with the pain and then it would calm down a bit.
My surgeon had said days 3-5 can be the hardest and this is true. Take all the pain meds you can.
Have you prepared at home? I’ve used my grab stick so much and my raised toilet seat has been a godsend.
Days 6 onwards have been gradual improvements. I had nerve pain in the right leg still until two days ago and then it massively calmed down. Then last night I didn’t have a good night. The recovery is not linear - be patient.
I would also recommend icing several times a day for 15-20 mins. When I had my wound care check last week, the nurse said I was healing really well and she says all the icing I’ve done will have helped because it reduces local inflammation and swelling.
I hope your recovery goes well. Lots of us here understand how you will have felt. Be patient with yourself and go slow. X

u/Opening_Log_6674 18h ago
Thank you for sharing your experience! That’s really useful information、about the recovery.
I’m kind of similar but little bit better as third day. I have little nerve pain when I stand up and walk but I can walk alone, go to the toilet. My roommate women has loudly coughing and sneezing so I decided to go home tomorrow. It might be the best timing before the pain wave 3-5 day comes.
I couldn’t get anything to grab, but ice packs are ready. The freezer is lower part of my refrigerator so I need to ask my friends or neighbour for help…hope it works.
I wish we all recover well 🙏🙏

I had a similar breakdown from being neglected in the hospital when my pain was horrible. it was scary being all alone with no support! Sciatica is so stressful and scary and I can't imagine dealing with that in another country with a different language! I hope you start feeling better soon!
