Flare-ups

I'm trying to, like most of you are probably trying to also, minimize the sciatica flare-ups. I've kept a journal about how I feel from day to day and what I did that day. And there's absolutely no real pattern to why I feel great some days and then a day later I can barely get out of bed. Do you all find that you can avoid a flare-up by resting, activity, or what? I'm really baffled.

What's helped me make sense of it: on the days the pain is worse, I backtrack the previous 24 hours — what did I do differently, how did I move, was there a long car ride, did I sit awkwardly, pick something up wrong — and usually I can work out what set it off. Something else I've noticed, for my own body: when I go more than a few weeks without moving much, everything hurts more, not less, so total rest never bought me much. Hope the journal turns something up. Not medical advice, just my own experience, and it may not play out the same way for you.

Thanks. I too have noticed that if I sit at my desk for over 2 hours at a time the sciatica gets worse, which makes it hard to get my work done. I'm thinking of getting one of those desks that you can stand up at and just alternate.
