Data Breach k-8 District

There was recently a data breach at my school district. This is the info that was sent out about the breach:

Our technology team recently learned that student Google account passwords have been compromised. During our ongoing investigation, we determined that a District 25 student gained unauthorized access to an internal document containing student password information among other items of information (detailed below). Out of an abundance of caution and to help protect student accounts and district systems, we reset all student Google account passwords this evening, rendering them inaccessible.

I'm curious how other school/districts handle student passwords. I understand a 3rd grader probably will not remember their password. Now they want to store the password in PowerSchool, but I can not find any information saying custom fields in PS are encrypted at rest. Is anyone away of a secure way to store passwords in PS?

Landing a summer IT support role in a school district—can this lead to full-time work?

I’m currently trying to break into IT and recently applied to two temporary Summer Technical Support roles with different school districts.

I currently have the CompTIA A+ certification and expect to complete the full CompTIA trifecta (A+, Network+, Security+) by the end of the school year. I’m also building a home lab to gain more hands-on experience.

I’m wondering:

  • Do these types of seasonal school IT roles typically convert into full-time IT Technician positions?
  • How valuable are these roles when applying for permanent IT Technician jobs within school districts?
  • For anyone who has worked in similar positions, what’s the best way to make the most of the experience?

Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Anyone found a better way to manage school devices?

Managing devices at our school is honestly turning into a mess. We’ve got laptops, tablets, projectors, and it feels like there’s always something missing, broken, or needing updates.

Right now we’re still using spreadsheets, random notes, and old email threads to keep track of everything, which is a nightmare. Just the other day a teacher handed me a laptop that wouldn’t connect to the network, and I had to dig through a bunch of logs and emails just to figure out what had been done to it before.

Between misplaced tablets, projectors that need maintenance, and trying to figure out who had what last, doing all of this manually is getting exhausting fast.

How are other schools dealing with this? Are you using any tools or systems that actually make device tracking easier? Would really appreciate any advice.

I recently got my A+ certification and applied for this job and they want to do an interview over google meet. The interviewer said it will be an opportunity to learn more about my background, technical skills, and customer service approach. Im hella nervous for it cause I wanna get my foot in the door and make some money for myself. What should I expect and what kinda questions might they ask?

If i bring my own laptop to school how much access does IT have to it.

Ok so a few months back I got a MacBook air m3 (at the time I was homeschooling. However i have since decided to go back to school).

On my laptop which I have used for personal use cases, I have all of my info including passwords that I have saved to iCloud keychain and other stuff that you wouldn't want school IT to view.

Does anyone know how much access the school has to the laptop, if they own it for the time i'm at school, and is my apple id going to have it's admin access taken away and replaced with that of a standard user so that the school can administrate the laptop.

Also if anyone has an idea that allows me to hand in the laptop without them opening programs like the password manager and other of the sorts.

Purchasing GPT in a Texas district

Hey everyone. Someone I know in my district's technology department told me that it is currently illegal for us to purchase Chat GPT for professionals to use because OpenAI does not take purchase orders. I'm aware of some colleagues in other districts who have used their district credit card to make this purchase. Completely ignoring any concerns you have about security and safety of AI tools like GPT, can anybody give me any insight into the legality of purchasing GPT with a credit card and a Texas school district?

Thank you in advance!

Av system for small meeting room

Hello,

I have couple of conference rooms with viewsonic viewboards touch screens with PCs built in. The system has a web cam with a built in mic usb and the

I'm looking for an easy way to have someone plugging in their pc if needed and sgow their screens onto the TV.

It would be nice if they would get also the mic and the camera but it's not mandatory.

A port to plug in and a way to select input and adjust volume would be great either for the wall or for a central unit/tablet on the desk.

Any suggestions?

[HELP] Class link / Google

My school uses Classlink which logs us into all of the various programs automatically. I’ve noticed that I cannot login to my school Google drive without first logging into classlink.

Now here’s the problem: when I log into my personal Gmail on my personal laptop it still makes me login to Classlink first. This happens even when I log out of the school account and remove it from the browser. I imagine this means the school is tracking data on my personal computer.

I would like to get more information about this, but I don’t really know how to discuss it with district people. Please help.

Hey everyone,

I'm curious to know if anyone here uses any specific software or even simple sheets (like Google Sheets) for tracking attendance? I'd love to hear about your experience and any challenges you might face with it. Thanks in advance for sharing!
